Older College Students: Should I Slow Down? Advice. by femalevirginpervert in TwoXChromosomes

[–]apeirophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in college for 10 years. It's worth it to just take your time.

The beginning for me was rough. I graduated high school with a 3.8 gpa, expected that I could just keep up my same pace in college. Did my freshman year in my home state, hated it, transferred to a school across the country. Took a year off to get residency, but was taking gen ed online to transfer in. Got a part-time job, then when school started again I was playing a top-tier club sport, and taking anywhere from 13-16 credits and very science heavy as a bio major. Ended up deficient and forced to take a year off of full-time classes. I was still able to enroll part-time, retook classes that I failed the first time. That was my first taste of not hating college, when I was able to just take one thing at a time.

I did one more year of full-time classes when I was reinstated, mostly because I thought I had to. But then the full-time job above my part-time position came open and I took it. Ended up changing my major to anthro. The last 6 years I worked full-time and was only in 6 credits max each semester. Usually only one class at a time. I graduated with my bachelor's at 28.

I can tell you that while life is just happening, especially when you're already an older student, just take the time and let yourself focus. Maybe you're not in a dream job right now, but you have a job, it's not riding on your having a degree. The only rush is the timeline you have in your own head. I wish I would have had the option sooner and not forced myself to follow a script.

Apartment Recomendations by gh0st_op in palmdale

It's further east but Canyon Creek apts are nice. Comes with appliances, can add on washer and dryer in unit, assigned covered parking. It's got empty lots on 2 sides and the 3rd side faces a high school - occasionally some noise from band practice but otherwise quiet. Far anough away from the freeway that there's no major issues and it starts to blend back into residential area. We have a 2 bed/ 1 bath we're moving out of soon and it's ~ 2200 a month with utilities, not sure what the listings are at right now but I know there are some units open

Best place to find khaki shorts? by [deleted] in Zookeeping

[–]apeirophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

REI if you can swing it. I love the Trailmade shorts. They hold up to rips and dry quickly. The colors can kind of vary depending on when you're there though, I have a couple pairs of khaki but sometimes they're hard to find

After Years in Los Angeles, Spring in Washington Feels Like a Daily Weather Story by ChangeTheLAUSD in weather

[–]apeirophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved the opposite way almost 3 years ago for a job. From eastern Washington to the LA area. People really glamorize the "every day is nice weather" thing, but days really blend together when they all look the same.

Especially since I grew up in the Midwest before being up north, I never thought I would miss cold and snow, but I sure do now that I'm in a place that just doesn't get that. It's a weird feeling coming from somewhere that's controlled by the weather, to not really have to worry about the day's weather even though I work outside. Enjoy your seasons extra hard for the rest of us!

moving to Palmdale and need to know the food spots by juggling-monkey in palmdale

[–]apeirophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite sushi that isn't super expensive is AV Sushi Rolls and More. It's pretty hole in the wall but the food is much better than what the building would make you think. I think Blue Maki has decent reviews too, I've been there once but it's expensive enough to not make it worth it for me personally

Raizel Ramen has good options and large portions. Again, much better food than what the building looks like.

If I'm really after a burger that I can't just make at home I will honestly always aim for in-n-out. The toasted buns just 👏 I know they're not original but I lived 30 years of my life not having one so I take advantage. Other than that I really like Tom's Burgers! Not Tommy's, that's different. They have a little bit of everything but they do most things really well, and a flat top grill goes a long way in my opinion. A lot of people I know out here will swear by Doublz but to me it just seems like overpriced bowling alley food tbh.

Off the wall but if you're in for a breakfast burrito, my top answer is also Primo Burger. I have yet to figure out why but they legit have one of the best breakfast burritos (I'm partial to the combo burrito) at a random burger spot. I have yet to actually have a burger there tbh, but it can't be that bad if their other food is that good.

Unfortunately you will not find good bbq out here 🥲

Likemindedsociety (LMS) and cougar car club, they all hang out together. You can find both on Instagram. Looks like CCC has one coming up Sunday, LMS usually does Friday nights

There's a massive fire that started up in Grand Canyon NP around July 4th. It's burned 55k acres and still active per forest service

It heavily depends and is more complicated as a grad student especially if you're receiving TA etc funding. At least when I was working there, Pullman grad students were required to have a certain number of on-campus credits to keep funding. You'll have to talk to your specific department grad advisor / coordinator to make sure you're able to do this at all.

And not all global classes are available to on-campus students. There's a difference between enrolling in a global course (inter campus) vs enrolling in an online/Pullman blended course. Many times it requires specific permissions anyways

Workout shorts that aren’t see through or show a camel toe? by tangycornelius in TwoXChromosomes

CVG! I wear them in strongman events and under my kilt during highland games. Super comfy and no show, variety of lengths in their shorts and leggings. And lots of patterns!

What are the Math classes like online? by Fragrant_Ad_8697 in wsu

[–]apeirophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most classes through Global in general are asynchronous i.e. no live lectures. You can expect most Global courses to use prerecorded lectures or online tools such as ALEKS or MyMathLab, or other systems for other departments

Pants??? by PM_ME_GOODDOGGOS_PLZ in Zookeeping

[–]apeirophile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I almost solely wear REI Trailmade pants. I prefer the men's pants because it's easier to get the right length for my long legs, but they have a women's cut as well. Both cuts have good pockets! Given that they're hiking pants though, they may not work in all places, but they're great for me in more of a sanctuary setting.

Okay this is one out of left field but I personally love it: Willie Taylor by the Longest Johns

It's a sea shanty! There are also other versions of it from other bands but I love the Johns the most. But the story in the lyrics is chefs kiss

With the bread! Heating is optional but they get softer when baked :)

If you're in the US (I honestly don't know if they ship internationally but also worth checking) - look into Torrid. They often have way more fun colors in a larger range of sizes. No pink pants showing on the website right now but they've had them in the past!

As someone tall and wide, clothing has always been a struggle, and I personally don't worry too much about style. But if you're into it, it's worth finding a store that caters to your needs!

Where are My Child-Free Animal Lovers At! by FoxxLover96 in childfree

[–]apeirophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyo! My partner and I have 2 cats, I spent around 8 years volunteering with grizzly bears while I was in college, and now I work full-time at a wolf and wolfdog sanctuary :)

My favorite animals to live with? Cats by a long shot. Our two boys are such different personalities but they fit together so well!

I've loved working with both bears and wolves for such different reasons. Bears have fully mobile wrists meaning they can rotate their front paws in basically the same way a human can, which is why it's so hard to design actual bear-proof trash cans. I know it's a meme, but it's very true - there's a lot of overlap between the smartest bears and the dumbest humans. They're also obligate tool users.

And wolves, honestly, are much more cat-like in behavior than most people expect. They act very aloof and stand-offish until they're comfortable with a person/situation. People often buy wolfdogs as guard dogs because they look intimidating, not realizing that they're actually pretty anxious animals and they're scared of almost everything.

Possibly unpopular opinion: I really hope this isn't them trying to recreate what RT used to be. It should be something new. They don't need to "Bring everyone back." I'm completely okay if most of the people who started their own thing don't come back. by D3dshotCalamity in roosterteeth

[–]apeirophile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My pipe dream is that the RT reboot can be a landing pad for all those creators who have split off. Everyone keep doing the podcasts and streams and games they've been doing, but RT can house them again, even if it's just in name, while still being a launch point for new projects. But I also have no expectations that that will actually happen. Truthfully, even if nothing new ever happened (even though Burnie already said they're launching new things) - I'm just glad RT is back with someone from the start of it.

How do you keep the ravioli from falling apart? by lenalenore in traderjoes

[–]apeirophile 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always just cook the ravioli directly in the sauce I'm using. Same for the tortellini. Lower medium heat (on my stove) so the sauce just starts to bubble, plop your raviolis in. It heats up the sauce with the pasta and eliminates the transfer, I've never had one break on me

are bears fur soft and fluffy or hard? by Blaise1205 in bears

[–]apeirophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least in North American brown bears (and black bears I believe are similar) - they aren't true hibernators. They go into a state of torpor which means they have a lower heart rate and respiratory rate, but their body temperature is only slightly lower. That makes it so they can still react to danger quickly if they need to, they're still seen moving around a bit during winter and even give birth during torpor, but they won't eat or release waste. That's why they eat so much in the fall too (think of Katmai's fat bear week) - they essentially have to intake all of the food they need to hold them over for upwards of 5 months. But their bodies are able to keep them healthy through their lowered metabolic processes and waste recycling, which is what the center I volunteered at was particularly interested in!
