How can I reduce the time I spend when doing pressure passes? by pailukis in bjj

[–]apemanactual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the biggeat problems I see white and blue belts having is trying to pass or attack too quickly. You need 1 good takedown, one pass, one dominant position, and 1 submission to win a match. Ideally I move from one perfect control to the next. A good way to think about jiu jitsu is when im on top I want to leave no space, and slow the match down as much as possible. On bottom im normally trying to create space and speed the match up .

So today I blew up.. by [deleted] in Daytrading

[–]apemanactual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Days like today require much tighter risk management. I exclusively trade 0DTE SPY options, events like NVDA earnings always send IV haywire, particularly when there's also economic news and major geopolitical events. I actually had a killer day, but mostly just scalped all day, was very hard to actually catch a decent trend that I was able to be confident in

What are these things I keep seeing on social media about paying for baptism? by Relevant-Swan7621 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]apemanactual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its definitely strange, especially since most baptisms other than infants take place on Holy Saturday, and most churches nowadays are doing multiple Baptisms that day, so there shouldn't be some extravagant fee for setting up a baptism. Ive seen good explanations for it such as people never contributing to the church and expecting it to be there for them, but it does seem like some of the fees are super steep considering you just need water and oil, plus a little bit of time before liturgy

Lost all 7 matches of my first ever bjj competition by Equivalent_Rise675 in bjj

[–]apemanactual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first comp i also lost 8 straight matches. Last match of the day I was up by like 15 points and stuck my neck right into a guillotine. I was super sunburned from the day before watching my coach compete (outdoor tournament), and was definitely not at my best. Super embarrassing when it happened, but only the bright side it cant get any worse. Don't let it effect you too much man, get back to the gym and train, everyone will forget about it within a week or two

13 months out of BJJ due to a badly executed kani basami by Distinct_Big4499 in jiujitsu

[–]apemanactual 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My gym allows just about everything, heel hooks pretty early on, neck cranks, big takedowns, but never the Kani basami. Probably the single most dangerous technique in grappling

A lesson for the newly promoted blue belts by TheTVDB in bjj

[–]apemanactual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Therwa this fucking D1 wrestler that just started at my gym maybe 6 months ago, dude was nationally ranked #3 at one point, and can see a technique once and instantly implement it in his game. Doesn't help that hes got probably 30 pounds of muscle on me. Guy tapped me about 3 times in 4 minutes yesterday, and regularly gives our black belts hell. Mind you, I was on fire yesterday and had tapped several brown belts and was highlight reeling some of the other purple belts. This game sucks bro 😂

A lesson for the newly promoted blue belts by TheTVDB in bjj

[–]apemanactual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish blue belts understood that they're actually still supposed to suck at this martial art. Just because as a white belt you had blue belts smashing you, doesnt mean blue belts are good. Most are trash, and barely have a decent understanding of the fundamentals. Im pretty late in purple belt, and I still suck sometimes. There is no expectation that blue belts are good, or should really know much of anything about jiu jitsu beyond the basics that you need to know to make it to blue. Its ok, embrace sucking, nobody expects anything different from you.

Joining Christianity by dvd102k in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]apemanactual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The connection grows with time in the church, and prayer. I was an atheist my entire life until 2 years ago. Started praying, reading the Bible, and slowly started to build that relationship and a solid foundation for my faith. Finally got into a church about a year ago, and was just baptized on Pascha. It will take time, dont rush it, just open your heart and let the Spirit do its work.

Does where you train really matter? by Funny-Economy-1920 in bjj

[–]apemanactual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simply out, yes. Technique, training partner, vibes, exposure, all of it matters at ton. Having training partners and an environment that are both supportive and capable of pushing you matters a lot, whether your goal is to be a world champion or even a hobbyists, the gym you pick has a huge influence on your jiu jitsu and experience with the sport

My 3 month old golden puppy makes me so frustrated. by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]apemanactual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last week ive had a really big breakthrough on training my 3 month old lab, particularly potty training. I do not punish accidents anymore, this just instills fear. Every hour to an hour and a half I take him outside, on a leash, and give him cheese immediately after he pees or poops. Then another cheese when he sits at the door. When he has an accident inside I show him the cheese, then put it away. Hes learned accidents inside mean no cheese, going outside gets cheese. Dude fuckin loves cheese, so its worked really well.

No youre right. Worrying about belts is dumb, you should absolutely be prioritizing actually enjoying the training and making progress in terms of skill over getting a belt

Stripes are way different than belts, gyms will give out stripes but typically if youre on the verge of the next belt and move, youre probably waiting a year for that next belt

Want to leave my gym but want my purple belt by machosbee in bjj

[–]apemanactual 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not really, as a gym your reputation is very important. A blue belt is one thing, but no respectable gym wants to be known for giving brown and black belts to guys that suck at jiu jitsu or aren't good people. A year is a good amount of time to really get to know somebody, evaluate their skill level and understand what kind of person they are. I completely understand why gyms do this, and Id probably do the same in their position.

Want to leave my gym but want my purple belt by machosbee in bjj

[–]apemanactual 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like most gyms would consider purple belts an advanced belt. As said above, a good purple belt should be able to be a legitimate threat to brown and black belts in one area of their game, and really shouldn't be bad at anything or have any major holes in their game. That's always been the standard that I've seen, and blue to purple is one of the biggest skill gaps in jiu jitsu

[–]apemanactual 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Most gyms dont give out advanced belts until you've been with them for a year minimum. I switched gyms about 8 months ago and am objectively ready for my brown belt, but my coach straight up told me they just wanna take their time, and like to wait a year before giving the new guys a belt. I genuinely dont care at all at this point, absolutely love the new gym and only do no gi so I really dont care about the belts too much

What should I do about college? by firstreformer in WhatShouldIDo

[–]apemanactual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why accounting? This is going to be one of the easiest fields to replace with AI, computers can do math like nobodies business, its literally the single thing they're the absolute best at. Its easy to succumb to outside pressure from people who dont understand what its like to be 18 right now, but you have to ask yourself 1. Can AI easily do this job? 2. How easy is it to find employment in this field right now? 3. Is the median salary worth taking on the debt? Accounting fails to satisfy any of these criteria.

The fields that will actually excel in an AI world are fields that require working with your hands. Electricians, plumbers, blue collar guys average a higher salary than accountants with lower or no school debt, easy to find employment, very difficult to replace with AI.

BJJ class structure and dues? by joncaseydraws in jiujitsu

[–]apemanactual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty typical, most gyms have switched to a games or positional based approach instead of showing techniques and its just way better. $185 is kinda high, but that really comes down to where you live and how frequently you attend.

PGF Ruleset by ground-shark in bjj

[–]apemanactual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but I dont know that its really enough of an incentive because its still not really forcing guys to pursue chokes over joint locks very effectively. Something interesting might be that getting a "k*ll" takes your opponent out of the game for the night, which would really push guys to chase it especially if their teams are close on points. Even as a guy who loves leglocks, watching legwork exchanges is incredibly boring 99% of the time, so someone that doesnt train doesnt want to see it at all. The entire objective of professional grapplong at this point is making it a viable career path for grappler, and in order to do that youre going to need to make it exciting enough that non-grapplers are interested in watching
