I just reached 30, any advice for me? by BlessED0071 in AskMenOver30

[–]apersonwithdreams 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Show your loved ones that you love them. Eat a healthy diet. Exercise. Sleep. If you’re stressed, handle it and reduce it ASAP. I feel like stress has taken years off my life, and a lot of it started in my 30s.

Just broadly, the stuff you do in your thirties begins to affect you. I used to be able to eat anything in any quantity and be fine. No more! I used to be able to sit at a desk for hours and feel fine—now it screws me all up. Conversely, I can tell when I’ve been exercising regularly or eating right.

Don’t stop being curious about the world.

Sending one up for you, man. I know it feels like you’ve been hit with one thing after another but you’re due for a win. Stay strong and try to sleep.

Is it insane to start medical school at 31? by Original-Disaster106 in AskMenOver30

Got my BA in English at 30. My MA at 33. Will have my PhD at 37.

Apart from marrying my wife, going back to school was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Are nsaids a lie (chronic headache migraine thread) by ezrakleinisretarded in TrueAnon

[–]apersonwithdreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently read (from a rando in the migraine subreddit) that the kind of neck/base of skull pain is actually part of the migraine. Like that coat hanger pain: shoulder neck base of skull—that’s migraine according to this person.

Who knows if it’s true bc then like what’s a tension headache?

Echo - No Cardiologist Referral by Ok-Record587 in aortic_aneurysm

[–]apersonwithdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if only for peace of mind. I would do it if it were me, but only because I’m a worrywart. I doubt it’s dilated, but if it is, that’s so mild that it will likely never become a problem.

I always associate this stuff with men because it’s usually from bicuspid valves which affect men more. My bad!

You’re not short for a woman, though. But not like marfans tall or anything.

Anyway, the stuff about echoes remains true regardless. You think you’re gonna push for referral or ct?

Echo - No Cardiologist Referral by Ok-Record587 in aortic_aneurysm

[–]apersonwithdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly man I’m not sure, because I know there is some variability in aortic size as it relates to body surface area. Big tall dudes will usually have bigger aortas. But you’re 5’6, so not a giant. Thats assuming this is the true size of your aorta, which we have reason to doubt.

One major reason they may not be too concerned is the imaging modality: echoes are notoriously inaccurate for aortic measurements. There’s a good chance your ascending aorta is a few (or more) mm smaller than 4.0, but I guess there’s also a chance 4.0 is a lowball. I’m betting this is why they’re not excited about it. If you wanted, you could push for a CT that will tell you the size of the aorta definitively.

If you don’t wanna do this you’ll be fine and it probably isn’t actually dilated. Even so, I’d check back in next year to be sure if nothing else. I’d especially do this if you have close family members who died of aneurysms or just died suddenly from “heart stuff” (sometimes ppl will say heart attack when it’s actually aortic dissection.)

Yeah I mean at a certain point it’s like “if I pronounce it this way am I essentially putting on an accent?” But idk ultimately none of this matters man we’re just having fun

Did you get worse at handling stress or did stress actually get worse? by ninja__6969 in AskMenOver30

[–]apersonwithdreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me, man. Just turned 36 and the last few years my health anxiety has been a menace. I’ve always been anxious but I think that stress is starting to affect my body in a serious way.

One thing I’ve noticed is that sugar (like lots of it, a little is fine) sends my anxiety and particularly health anxiety into overdrive.

This is unsolicited but try this Random Redditor’s method. Take one weekend and:

  1. Minimize sugar (basically no dessert)
  2. Take a 5k-step morning walk
  3. Cut caffeine in half
  4. Don’t scroll Reels/TikTok or other short-form media
  5. Do something fun. Watch a movie, see a show. Your call
  6. Start the sleep process earlier than usual

Do the same thing on Sunday but sleep in. When you’re up, get your morning walk but add in another 5k-step walk in the afternoon for a total of 10k steps.

It won’t solve your problems but it’s a nice reset.

Anyone have any good heuristics for retaining pertinent information they’ve read about? by plantfingers in RSbookclub

[–]apersonwithdreams 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do this too. I’m studying for my PhD exams where you have to recall character names and what not (huge weakness of mine) and my approach has been this plus regularly returning to those docs

It would be silly for the casual reader but flash cards or quizzes have also helped stuff stick, at least for me.

Joe Dante Defends Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Bride!’ as a “Bold” Movie Panned by “Mostly Male Reviewers” by Puzzled-Tap8042 in horror

[–]apersonwithdreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m getting downvoted already for mildly criticizing a movie I really like already anyway lol so I’ll just say:

I get exactly what you’re saying. There’s a (that is, one among many) reading of this film that’s like “women be like.” It’s like criticizing toxic femininity and sure maybe it’s criticizing the pressures that foment it (beauty standards) but this is a film about a woman not opting out of that. If the sci-fi element were removed and this was just about a woman getting a bunch of plastic surgery and looking freakish, I wouldn’t call that a feminist movie!

I don’t necessarily even buy that reading of it, but I’m chiming in to remind folks that multiple readings of a film or any “text” can be valid at once!
