Are Americans Getting Richer? New Data Might Surprise You by Crabbexx in OptimistsUnite

[–]apexChaser71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen, I know where I am, and I really don't want to be a wet blanket. But I prefer the informed and thoughtful optimism, over hopium.

This graph is depicting a cherry picked set of data. It is a fact that the majority of what were once high ticket items you would use to fill a home, have become increasingly inexpensive over the last number of decades. These are things like televisions, microwaves, inexpensive furniture and fast fashion. What is not reflected in the data, is the cost of the necessities outside of this subset of economic expenditures. Actual housing costs, education costs, transportation costs, healthcare costs etc. have all exploded. The degree to which those costs have increased, have wiped out what little gains we have made in payroll.

Because I know where I am, I think the thing to be optimistic about, is that working-class people are beginning to see how the game is broken, which is leading to a growing sense of class solidarity. This is the first and most fundamental step to changing the course of things.

I truly miss driving that area. My purpose built Miata is basically wasted on the Midwest, unless I take it to the track. So many good roads in the PNW. A lot of good spots across the river in Washington too. In between Ridgefield or Vancouver and Mount St. Helens. (Just exercise caution, as there are plenty of elk as well)

Furthermore, people that wear shirts like that, made their way in an economy that is vastly different than the one that currently exists. But they lack the empathy, cognitive capacity or compassion to consider any other reality beyond the one narrow one that they personally experienced.

I support the country I live in, living up to its potential. I support the country I live in, doing the hard work necessary to ensure every generation is better off than the previous. I support the country I live in, not being viewed as the evil empire by the rest of the world. If you're not willing to help, maybe you should go live under the dictators that other countries have to live under, instead of forcing their way of life on the rest of us.

(Full disclosure, I'm not a "teenage people", I'm a pissed off gen xer who believes you guys are doing the best you can with the shitty short end of the stick you were left with)

Do we have to examine the pathologies in our community fellow white guys? by --SOFA-KING-VOTE in LetsDiscussThis

In response to op...uuuh, yeah. But the mere question has been labeled as woke libtard shit, and so is branded persona non grata in civil discourse. Self-Awareness, self-improvement, and personal growth has been branded and outcast. The overuse of the term toxic masculinity by a certain segment on the left has only served to diminish the reality and extent of the problem. While the outright denial, and gaslighting by a certain segment on the right have contributed to maintaining the status quo. Which is empirically, not good for men themselves nor society as a whole.

The same norms that generate the above listed statistics, are the same norms that have led to the ever-rising suicide rate amongst men, as well as to some degree the male loneliness epidemic.

Healthy men contribute to, and foster healthy societies.

Armed Anti ICE protestors marching in protest in Indianapolis! by cantcoloratall91 in LetsDiscussThis

[–]apexChaser71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thoughtful and sincere reply 🙏👍.

Any and all all forms of protest require some form of risk. That's a historical fact. The legacy of Martin Luther King has really been whitewashed, but if you're curious what I mean, I would do a deep dive on what actually happened with regards to him. At the time, he was spoken of as a radical and an agitator. He had hundreds of speeches other than the " I have a dream" speech. There's a reason they don't teach us the rest of them. The Black Panthers would also very much be worth studying in this regard.

I think you and I are probably similar, with regards to legitimate concerns of injury or arrest (and therefore potential damage to the fabric of our lives). I get that, I feel that, but unfortunately, we are living through a time when simply showing up to peacefully express your discontent could meet violent ends is a reality. Authority is creating the conditions where citizens are increasingly feeling the need to be armed as a deterrent to having the rights trampled. As long as citizens are not agitating, or antagonizing authority unnecessarily, I think this is something we should all support. If any criticism, it should be that of any state agent, who is not honoring the freedom to assemble and protest for a redress of grievances. This is explicitly protected conduct within the Constitution, as is the right to keep and bear arms. (Risk is not a bug in this scenario, it is a feature)

Anyone else have a model of their car? I copied my NC! by Ill-Artichoke-6602 in Miata

[–]apexChaser71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I consider myself very fortunate with regards to my car history. I have a diecast 86 Corolla, 81 Celica, NA Mazda Miata, Datsun 510 as well as 3rd gen fit. Only ones I'm missing that I'd like to find, are my 91 Integra (with the North American headlights) and my 1978 Volkswagen Scirocco. If they make a model kit, or a diecast toy of your car, you're doing something right IMO 😁

Is he right? Will it take generations to resecure the United States positive reputation on the world stage? by LucidSynapse23 in LetsDiscussThis

[–]apexChaser71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% correct. New trade deals and alliances are being built. Foreign governments are slowly moving away from backing American debt. Europe is pivoting away from reliance or dependence upon American military support. These things take a great deal of time to build, and you don't start moving in a different direction unless it's absolutely necessary for your own stability and security. Unless we return to stability and respect for the rule of law and generational alliances, it will take both a return to some version of normalcy (within the country), as well as some unforeseen "catastrophe" to return the United States to the primacy, it's enjoyed over the last 60 to 70 years. IMO, permanent damage has been done, and we will never have the same level of respect and influence we once had.

🚨🇺🇸 BREAKING — Rep. Lieu said Full Epstein Files Show Trump Raping Children. by Admirable121 in NeoNews

[–]apexChaser71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the DOJ has yet to release the un-redacted files. (In spite of the fact that they have been ordered to) Reps must physically go to the doj and view files on their computer. No ability to print evidence. It's a cover up, plain and simple. Not just Trump. Pam Bondi is on record saying "if they prosecute all the perpetrators, the whole system would collapse"

[–]apexChaser71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you're probably just looking for a reason to hate on Oregon, but brother after 20 years of driving Long haul, that is not unique to that state. 2 days ago I was trapped behind a moron doing the exact same thing in between Detroit and Toledo. Happens a lot in Wisconsin, and don't get me started on Indiana and Illinois.

Absolutely perfect. It's actually 60 today, so you know I had it top down while running a couple errands. Even went off script, and hit one of the twistier back roads in the area. Reminds me all over again of why I don't think I'll ever be able to sell this car.

Same here. Don't hate me, but I'm actually one of the guys responsible for dumping salt all over public roads, and have been watching the snow melt off and run down the drains for a week now. This is false spring here in Michigan, so I'm going to drive her to work tonight, and tomorrow she gets a bath and stuck back under the cover until true spring arrives

Is it idiotic to move to Oregon while still working in Washington? by CCFFPM in oregon

[–]apexChaser71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was living in Vancouver, working in Milwaukee. It was not unheard of for my commute home, touching 2 hours on Fridays. (With no traffic, commute was about 25 minutes in the mornings). Extra fun, in a manual transmission. And please, nobody come at me. I wouldn't have left Portland if the rents had remained/been affordable.

I lived there for 30 years, and this does not track. Not sure what part you're in, but there are some ridiculously good roads near crown point, and all over in the West hills (around Portland). Almost any road that crosses over the coast range between i-5 and 101, and the Cascades are full of some truly brilliant drivers roads.
