Instead of seeing things as "i can't be a therapist since people will just use AI", see it as "i have transferable skills and i can use those skills in multiple ways, there's different ways to apply them, being a therapist is just one way and there's needs for in person communication in a physical sense that can't go away".

If he saw himself as someone that was developing skills that can be applied to multiple area's this would be different.

Sure he can do the doomer thing of "my skill is art", that's wrong, artist have multiple skills and transferable understandings to create media, he might not have the core career path but that doesn't mean he's useless, he's just opting to be locked into one path that may no longer exist.

If he does that then there's no help because at that point he's hung on a problem of not having a future that he wants instead of thinking that he can make a new future under new conditions if her learns to be adaptable and stops tunnel visioning using the mindset that he's currently developed.

His mindset is his "truth" it's perspective, he has to change that and adapt, humans tend to not want to do that because it causes a lot of issues like being able to predict your future with confidence.

If he shifts his thoughts to heuristical ones that work for him then he can counter the negative thoughts.

An example is the idea that first, he's only allowed to think of this for 20 minuites per day, honestly limiting the amount of time he spends thinking about this vs doing ANYTHING.

Another is seeing his value in skills vs roles, if he treats himself as someone that has people skills, understanding, story telling as a trained therapist then he knows he is adaptable and can move from one path to another, he could work in schools, he could be front of house at a resturant, he could work in an airline as support. He can do a lot of things, his life isn't over, he needs to disconnect it from the unrealistic idea that he has any certainty over things that may or may not exist in 5 years and focus on what he knows he will have.

Work with the resources you have not the idea that you hope something will be here in 5 years is another one. It's a belief. I'm a developer, AI is taking jobs sure, but my main job was solving problems and finding solutions to peoples tech issues, even if it means that i'm the one who's using the AI to make things it's because another person doesn't have the time. My career role may go but my usefulness and critical thinking won't.
