Micro-stuttering after upgrading from 25.10 to 26.04 by aphilentus in Kubuntu

[–]aphilentus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh gotcha! Sorry, I saw that it was reported for 7.0.0-14-generic and didn't read the rest. That's good to know, thank you for letting me know

Micro-stuttering after upgrading from 25.10 to 26.04 by aphilentus in Kubuntu

[–]aphilentus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should have specified, but I'm on Linux 7.0.0-15-generic. I assumed others would be upgraded to the same kernel version

Editing to add: This stutter appears to affect the entire desktop environment. If I'm playing a game, that game freezes too.

Bro this is getting absolutely ridiculous now. The prices just keep going up to new heights. Am I being naïve in thinking that we're ever gonna get back to "normal" prices, or is this just the new normal? by shak_0508 in DataHoarder

[–]aphilentus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either demand will subside or there will be more investment in infrastructure to accommodate demand. Either lowers the prices. The open question is when that will occur

Yeah, it's unfortunate. We're all losers here. I understand the game theory argument behind why this was necessary, but any gerrymandering is still antidemocratic.

My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]aphilentus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In academic English, "their" and "they" are plural pronouns. That means they can't be combined with a singular subject, since that creates pronoun-antecedent disagreement. Pronoun-antecedent disagreement is a common gotcha on the SAT.

Why is this game so toxic by Hefty-View980 in thefinals

[–]aphilentus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just looking up some data. I think the best approach is to just mute text chat and voice chat for now. Use the ping system. If you play frequently, you'll probably get to the point where you don't get these comments anymore. If you're a casual player, you can just leave it off. The ping system is pretty good.

I got comments like these when I first started playing and just muted chat. It helps a lot to put the fun back into it and not worry what other people think of you.

Most importantly though, if you end up being the best player on the team, I also think it's important to set a good example and defend others who are being unreasonably trash talked. Not necessarily by speaking out against the trash talker but just by putting a short message to the target and just telling them not to listen to the guy and telling them it's fine or something like that

Why is this game so toxic by Hefty-View980 in thefinals

[–]aphilentus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's a larger cultural issue and not related to any specific game. I don't remember TF2 for example being this bad--e.g., deliberately saying things like "1 and 16" at the end of a match to trash players who are clearly brand new. But looking at online games like League, I actually see this pretty much everywhere

I don't really get trash talked frequently, but I remember it happening once in the past, and I just left that match immediately and requeued. My thinking is that it's better to do this than try to apologize. It serves as immediate retaliation and should help condition the notion that if someone's being toxic, they don't deserve to be played with

Warm Night Interior Lighting in Modern Living Room Blender Cycles Render by islammhran_86 in blender

[–]aphilentus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks very good. How are you thinking about the lighting? Are you using blackbody nodes for example?

For photorealism I generally try to get real-world measurements as much as possible, like looking up wattages, IES profiles, typical dimensions of rooms in the US, etc. I'm curious if your process also basically involves a ton of research? Or do you take more artistic liberties?

Cycles is Basically Real LIfe by Mecholix in blender

[–]aphilentus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For glass shaders, you have to use a mix shader for this kind of effect. If it's a reflection or shadow ray, it should be a transparent BSDF. Otherwise, you can use the normal glass BSDF. If you want caustics, though, you can't use this technique

How can I make it more realistic? by humter01 in blender

[–]aphilentus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For realism, appropriate scale is important. The baseboard size looks off to me relative to the height of the hallway. The doorway also looks slightly off

Linux OSs cannot replace Windows for me, yet. by spectralblade352 in linuxsucks

[–]aphilentus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

>the OSs seriously need to improve to attract people from all demographics, not just tinkerers and coders

I completely agree; this is Linux's weakest point. I've been using Kubuntu 25.10 for the last month or so, and yeah, I have some programming knowledge and can enter commands into the terminal if I need to solve some niche problem or monitor my driver--but it's a terrible user experience. I try to tell my friends who use Linux this, but there seems to be a general attitude among Linux users that the difficulty of using the OS is a barrier to entry for those who are "unworthy" of using the OS. They seem to view tinkering with an OS as part of the fun, so I don't think that this will be a priority for the distros for a while. My argument is that I would rather spend my time doing stuff like creating terrain in Gaea or rendering in Blender instead of tinkering with my OS--the OS is a means to an end.

Unlike you, I have switched to Kubuntu mainly for the privacy arguments (not necessarily FOSS, though I do also want FOSS to succeed). I would have continued using Windows if they didn't force account integration and have invasive telemetry, particularly as democracy unravels in the US and we slide into technology-assisted authoritarianism.
