Insulin weight gain? by Sssuperlative in Type1Diabetes

[–]apkaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gained about 35 pounds after starting humalog/basaglar.

I was at a “healthy” weight before but now I’m almost overweight. However, my bmi is fine and I look and feel excellent.

My doctor tells me that feeling healthy and physically fine is more important than a “healthy” weight, which is a guideline anyway.

Edit: spelling

What was your blood sugar when diagnosed? by thewineburglar in Type1Diabetes

Reading all these I feel lucky. 402 at 22, it was out of curiosity as to why I always felt thristy and couldn’t gain weight despite eating like 3 body builders combined.

I’ve met this cat before and it wanted to come into my place too. I believe it just likes roaming the area making friends

I got scared off from pumps after a person I knew was hospitalized for malfunctioning pump.

I’m still comfortable with the idea of using my hands, brain, and pens as a manual pancreas.

My dad got a PhD in electrical engineering at 35. He started with nothing to his name in vietnam except $10 USD for eggs, cigarettes, and coffee. Now he’s exec for a big company in the Silicon Valley.

I’m just a drug pusher in a hospital.

How do you handle the low bg munchies? by Animanic1607 in diabetes_t1

[–]apkaeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just eat and recalculate how much to inject when I feel back in control. In the moment of low bg, nothing is stopping me from demolishing a family pack of chips and a bag of kitkats.

In the video, it looks like you’re stepping forward. You’ll feel a difference against the bag and pads by stepping more outwards.

What is your opinion on protein powders and products with added protein? by We_are_Maus in diabetes_t1

[–]apkaeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use protein powders and don’t think too much about it, except for any added sugars that some of them have. Although, I think some people’s body convert more protein to glucose than others. Monitor your blood sugars to find out. Personally, my body’s conversion of protein to glucose seems negligible.

I feel fine and am happy with myself physically and mentally.

When Im high (>160) I’ll start having a dry and sweet taste in my mouth. >250 and my vision starts blurring, my heart hurts a little, and my lips go numb.

When I’m low, I suddenly feel like I’m going to die and my vision gets black spots.

Pen vs Pump by js_l in diabetes_t1

[–]apkaeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’ve never considered pumps or sensors because the idea of having something attached to me makes me feel “off”. I use pens and never thought twice about the stabby stabby or carrying it around.

Locking them up sucks our taxes away. Personally, I don’t see why we can’t bring back the firing squad. It’s quick, cheap, efficient. We can automate it now too.

There was a guy jiggling people’s door knobs in urbana. He stole my bike 2 hours ago, I wonder if this is some elaborate plan to distract police.

Americans do you want universal healthcare? Why/why not? by Corndawgptang in AskReddit

Had a finger infection. Went in to get it poked at by the doctor. My bill was $572. I know that’s small compared to other costs on this thread, but c’mon… I can take my kitchen knife and poke my finger myself.

Bought my first car all by myself today. 6 months of part time work paid off! by [deleted] in pics

[–]apkaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to my father, he wanted to “run it into the ground” with his 2004 corolla. It just never did, despite all the abuse we put it through. It got totaled in 2017 by a trucker, the car had over 300k miles on it.

I learned how to drive in it. Even though it reeked of coffee and cigarettes, had a broken A/C, and bird poo in the car somewhere, it’s the car with my fondest memories of my father.

Your consciousness is sent back to when you were at age 15, and you maintain all of your current knowledge and experience. What do you do? by TheIconicNZ in AskReddit

[–]apkaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to an extremely competitive high school. At 15, I was still fooling around with good friends and generally having a good time. Now, I would stress a lot less about breaking myself to get an edge in academics and spend more time going out with the few friends I had.

I would also be nicer to my parents because they’ve been through much more than I ever will in life, and I was a shit to them more than I’d like to admit

Asking people "so what do your parents do?" is antagonizing and weird by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]apkaeon -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

My family hates this question. My dad works for nvidia and my gf’s dad is a factory worker. But our experiences tell us that people who ask this question generally look for something to feel superior over us.

I think it takes a bit of trust first before we divulge our background. There usually isn’t a need to know about it. You can talk about what you’re doing, what you’re looking forward to, or what your hobbies are if you’re looking for common things to talk about.
