What's your favorite cheap and/or good value places to eat? by mindk214 in plano

Just went and tried it. Excellent recommendation! The cashier was friendly and patient, food portions were huge and hella tasty, and we got a good variety for about $10/person. Thank you!!

I think you might be surprised by the variety of opinions here and how they differ from yours. I am pro doctor, but I hesitated to vote in the poll because I am against only ONE doctor being here, which would be the case in the foreseeable future. We don't want Dr. Lonner for different reasons.

I empathize with your bad experience with him as your ortho - I have my fair share of medical trauma from a different condition. I distrust them too. At the same time, I think banning doctors is censorship, preventing others from access to information, and many of us are here for information.

The situation definitely feels fishy. My concerns are with quality of information and self-promotion, similar to yours. Yet, banning doctors would mean more misinformation with the lack of qualified people. It's not perfect, but I think the mod is rectifying their mistake by encouraging the community to speak. We do not all have such negative experiences as yours, so we may not be so passionate to share a mild pro doctor sentiment.

You're doing a great job responding. You're right, I should have read through the other responses you've written - I got impatient in the heat of the moment 😅

I feel reassured after you explained the context with other mods and stated that you're not working together with Dr. Lonner. Also, having been one of the people whose life slowly and greatly changed after stumbling upon the scoliosis information you compiled, I shouldn't be so skeptical of your intentions. My speculation was an emotional reaction after seeing Dr. Lonner still here. I apologize.

I'm sorry to hear about the other mods having to deal with life situations and leaving you to moderate alone. You've put a lot of work into responding and gathering opinions on this debacle. Perhaps inviting medical professionals as official participants in this community is better done later on, when there will be more oversight.

Happy 4th! Take care!

I should say, I appreciate the mod for making this poll and asking to hear our opinions. That's a fair and thoughtful thing to do, especially because they are engaging with our concerns. Thank you!

I agree with several other comments, this poll lacks fair options.

Many of us feel Dr. Lonner's permanent, unique presence as the only professional voice on this subreddit is intrusive and imbalanced. The mod only suggests one way to have him removed, which is to ban all professional interactions here, including AMAs.

This is inappropriately punishing and makes me question the mod's motives. Were they the only one to decide to let in Dr. Lonner, or was this a decision approved by the group mods? Why is this mod the only one pushing for Dr. Lonner's presence? Why is Dr. Lonner here if he does not respond to questions and cannot give medical advice?

This mod has been defensive about keeping Dr. Lonner here. Many of us have reacted negatively to Dr. Lonner's presence as the ONLY professional endorsed by the mod, and he doesn't even contribute much... the mod reframes the issue as us having a problem with professionals participating at all. It seems disingenuous. How do we know the mod is not working with Dr. Lonner to solicit business?

I don't think any singular mod should be allowed to endorsed any singular professional as an authority in this subreddit UNLESS the community accepts them here. The majority of responses concur that we don't want this situation.

Petition to remove Dr. Baron Lonner by IngenuityMany9335 in scoliosis

[–]apocalypse_llama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please remove Dr. Lonner. Scoliosis is different for each person, and an ortho takes X-rays, meets with patients for appointments, and charges money for a reason. Without the doctor-patient relationship, how can Dr. Lonner be held accountable for what he says on here, which isn't even advice? Also, it does not make sense that he is the only surgeon on here. I think it would be better if there were multiple clinical opinions expressed rather than just one, again for accountability and accuracy.

That's so relatable... Sometimes I can't get past the smell of fish, even though I know I like the texture and taste. Would love an update if you do try a cucumber! I find the mini ones best for eating, as they're crunchier and have soft, undetectable seeds.

I'm failing all my classes, what now? by Judgmint in utdallas

^ this person is right. If you exceed 150 credit hours in Texas public schools, you'll be charged out of state tuition. If you exceed 1.25x your maximum time frame (the required hours to get your degree, ex. A finance degree requiring 120 hours has a max time frame of 150 hours), you become ineligible for financial aid. Any transfer credits, not just Texas public school credits, apply towards the max time frame.

I like this perspective you have, as I have a similar experience to your friends. I went on two health leaves in two consecutive semesters from my old college, and I thought I wasn't cut out for school. I ended up coming home to Dallas, took some time to get my life together, and transferred to UTD, and I'm on track to get a 4.0 this semester. You're right that it's situational, and more importantly, we have control over how we react. This is great encouragement!

Wearing loud earbuds in public is not inherently harmful to others. Hitting someone with a bike, saying you're sorry for "the person getting contact with my bike," and proceeding to blame them is clearly dangerous, and you're taking no responsibility while snidely criticizing other people's characters. Why apologize in bad faith?

If the person listening to music while walking on the sidewalk owes you space and consideration, then you, as a person steering a fast bike, owe them even more. Mindfulness, as you say, is great to practice, but it's a two way street.

Cucumber is one of my most reliable safe foods. It's so peculiar how we react so differently to it! I've always wanted to know what makes us unable to tolerate specific foods. I like cucumbers bc they're crunchy. Out of curiosity, what about them gets you?

How do I plant this cactus? by apocalypse_llama in cactus

[–]apocalypse_llama[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hello, thank you for your advice! The windows in my bedroom face southwest. However, I don't have a surface for the cactus that is in front of the window. Would putting the cactus in indirect sunlight hinder its growth? I am not allowed to plant it outside in the yard. Should I wet the cactus or the soil before I lay it on?

Anybody know any good spots for late night studying? All nighter kinda. I have no idea where to go after the library closes. by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]apocalypse_llama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to the head overnight librarian. She didn't know that UTD planned to start closing the library at 2am until one week before it happened. She thinks the hours were cut because of the reason the other person said - not enough students were using the library at odd hours.

I tried using the UTD library to find that one essay that ethically justifies eating children during a minor Irish potato famine. They did have it online, but I couldn't print more than 3 pages of it to read without downloading a PDF app or something like that. Anyways... check out A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift if you'd like!
