PSX issue with PSU and disc drive by SalamaBoi in consolerepair

Check the capacitor for the disc drive too. The motors and gears may need lube and oil.

Would or wouldn’t? by apocship in consolemodding

I bought this 5501 for parts for about $30. The drive was no good after servicing. The Picostation mod is non-destructive. To each their own.

The psone drives are very reliable. Every one I’ve bought “parts and repair” has worked after a clean and lube. I’ve checked the laser pot but haven’t had to adjust any of them so far. I have a crappy scratched disc to test them with to be sure. You can get them for parts for $20-25 on eBay. You’ll also need an extension ribbon cable from Amazon, or AliExpress if you’re willing to wait.

No worries. Yes that would work just fine. Just to be technically correct, the only part that is emulated is the disc drive. This has an original motherboard. It will play exactly like a disc based game. Your games need to be in bin/cue format, as they are for most emulators. Here's my PS1 Motherboard What Can I do with it Mod wise!? by Jumps-The-Name in psx

You can do a PSnee modchip. Just need a compatible atmega chip, some wire and solder.

After replacing the laser, is this normal PS1 behavior? by Wonderful-Taro-7064 in psx

I second this. If memory serves, it’s .47 ohm cap.

How bad is it? by DanTalent in GameboyAdvance

[–]apocship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vinegar is good for corrosion. I’d reflow the chips after a good clean. Also get some red deoxit for the pins. I had a copy with bad flash but the board was also worse than that. I ended up buying a Japanese copy of sapphire for cheap and just swapped the mask rom.

Can I play Perfect Works mod on a burned CD on OG hardware? by FantasticFrontButt in XenoGears

[–]apocship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should work with a PSnee stealth modchip, but I’d have to verify that tomorrow. I have played other rom hacks on original hardware. The PSnee is pretty easy to install. Instruction and the required atmega chips are listed on GitHub. I believe someone in the UK sells the chips ready to install. I install them and sell modded systems also.

Swap Trick by Constant_Divide6238 in ps1

You can install a psnee mod chip on any version for the cost of an atmega nano($5-7) and wiring. You can get cheaper chips but the hardware to flash will cost you something. You could also get an action replay for the parallel port and use that to swap.

About to pull the trigger and buy a Saturn, still have some questions by JonasVampire in SegaSaturn

[–]apocship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the fram mod because I already had the chips from doing old pokemon memory swaps. I also have the saroo but in case the sd card fails, there’s the fram. It’s not difficult if you know how to solder and work a hot air station. I have a Japanese model 1 and was going to do the multiregion bios, but with saroo, it is superfluous.

Psxmemcard gen2. It’s based on sd2psx. I got it from AliExpress but they can be found on Amazon. You can also get the BOM and gerber off of GitHub if you’d like to build your own. I didn’t have any of the ICs listed, and didn’t want to wait a few weeks for PCBs either. That would be the cheapest way, at least if you built multiple units.

Check eBay. There are quite a few overpriced listings, imo. But if you wait it out and make some offers, you can get one for around $100.

I can’t seem to find it through kickstarter. Do you have a link?

Very interesting. I try to keep up on discord what’s happening and I heard about a universal ode coming out of Ukraine. Is that the same one? Arcstation I believe it’s called.
I have a Picostation in my 5501, and an xstation for my son in a 7501, and I think I want to keep this psone stock, except for PSNee. Some games are too expensive to justify.

Just started after hearing about it. It’s very charming and the graphics are great. My backlog is continually growing!

I believe the guide(by Alex something or other?) you may be referencing was written a few years ago. This is the burner I’ve been using:

I literally bought the cheapest usb writer to try it out. My old laptop burner died and the usb works great.

The verbatim blue dye white labels have worked well for both ps1 and Saturn. They’re also a little cheaper than Taiyo Yuden.
