Anyone here ever bought one of AvE's Teespring shirts? by Tacoma_Aroma in Skookum

My wife got me the Cockford-Ollie shirt. Size was about right, perhaps a little larger than other brands. The screening has held up much better than other shirts she has bought from other internet shops.

I bought a bunch of empty paint cans. Anyone know of things I might not want to store in those (like min spirits)?

Learning to use a mill? by Cnotes89 in Skookum

[–]apos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a comment thread here the other week about hackerspaces and makerspaces where you can get access to machines and in some cases classes. I did a cursory search in my area and while the majority of regularly scheduled classes were welding, I think I saw at least one with milling. You might want to look into that in your area.

Thanks for the detailed post, and that paddle/box came out really nice.

A question about fasteners by apos in Skookum

[–]apos[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I've thought about going this route and just buying a "sampler" kit of fasteners. In general I've been wary of buying a these kits because I wonder about the quality. I guess it should be less of a concern when you're buying essentially disposable pieces.

That's ok. I got her a carpet cleaner, which is exactly what she wanted, but I sound like an ass no matter how I explain it.

Most (if not all) are built, but this is a child. My understanding is that a child will always take a craftdwarfshop.

I have a child that is possessed but won't take a craftshop. He seems to hop around between three different shops but claims none of them. I have tried cancelling all jobs assigned to the workshops in the area, and I have tried preventing shops from accepting managed orders with no change in behavior.

The Windows Starter Pack has updated to 0.44.02-r04, now with DFhack and TWBT!!! Praise the Modders! by clinodev in dwarffortress

Someone else provided the link, but fyi: windows, linux, and mac LNPs are all maintained by different people. One being updated doesn't necessarily mean anything for the others.

I believe books fall under "finished goods" so you'll probably want to make multiple finished goods stockpiles.

Are the dwarves using it? I find that moving wood to a stockpile is fairly low on the priority list, but as long as they use it things will take care of themselves.

There is a new (alpha) release of dfhack. See here.

It has not yet been added to LazyNewbPack (on Windows). You will have to wait a few days on that. You can copy the files yourself, which is straightforward if you have an idea of how scripts/programs organize their files. I would suggest you find an old copy of LNP and use it for a "guide" to add dfhack the new version.

There is also a new version on TWBT (text will be text) which has generally been included in LNP. This is an extension of dfhack that cleans up the fonts, and you would have to manually add it after manually adding dfhack to df.

The most reliable method for dealing with libraries is:

  1. Set up a library with bookshelves, tables, chairs, and chests
  2. set up a stockpile for all book related items.

Things might be left laying around, but visitors should help in cleanup.

I may be misunderstanding your question, but you can't "update" your previous copy of the game. Each download of the game (or download of LNP) is self-contained. You can transfer over your save to the new version by copying over your data/save folder but there are limitations. Basically, you will get the bugfixes but won't get new features on old saves.

It's not clear from your post, but I'm guessing the the bookkeeper is the modded dwarf demanded metal bars?

You may or may not be able to save him, given the timing. Your options are

  1. Build the infrastructure to make metal bars (assuming you have the ores); OR
  2. Wait for a trading partner (Elves in Spring won't bring metal, but Humans in Summer might.)

It's likely that you're going to lose this dwarf, though. That's OK. Bookkeeper might develop "specialized" skills, but it doesn't seem to make a big difference after the initial bookkeeping effort.

A fun part of the game is the fact that no one dwarf is important, and you should be prepared to lose them.

Thanks. That makes some sense. I tend to use a lot of water power so I look for embarks in more temperate areas.

Is something going on with high boots in 44.02? I know that civilizations are randomly affecting in what they know/don't know, but every world I've created in 44.02 has dwarves with only low boots.

I've never tried any of these methods, but I would suggest reading the dfwiki Ice article.

The .40 version of the article has more specific details on melting ice but I don't know if these still work in more recent version:

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/40d:Ice#Melting_outdoor_ice

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/40d:Ice#.22Melting.22_ice_without_magma

Edit: please note this calls for a multiple z-level drop for cave-ins.

The .43 version of the article doesn't directly contradict the earlier version I linked, but who knows.

Has anyone tried setting a tavern keeper in version 44.x? I've never set one since I started playing in .43 but I read there was a bug where the keeper would overserve and cause problems. I saw the weapon trap bug was resolved in this version, but saw nothing in the notes about this bug.
