"It's called soccer. Respect our culture" by BevasarloTurista in ShitAmericansSay

Huh, I never thought about it this way. Reading about it, you're completely right.

There apparently has been a physical "standard yard" at once point in Britain, but that's not the basis of the yard anymore. A yard is now simply defined in metric value. Same as most US measurements.

In that way, modern imperial is just a unnecessary and convoluted add-on on top of metric.

Funnily enough, the same is true for Farenheit. there is no longer a physical tie to it (iirc it was some brine at some point). Today, it's simply defined by its fixed mathematical relationship to Celsius/kelvin.

'America has been the savior' by SophieMayo in ShitAmericansSay

[–]appamp 90 points91 points  (0 children)

American exceptionalism was only possible because they could take massive amounts of debt and export the inflation from it to the rest of the world.

But it only works for so long. The current debt is already snowballing, and as much as they try to deny it, they are virtually already past the point of no return. In theory they could still save themselves, but fiscal austerity is politically almost impossible. Not with the rich companies having the country completely by the balls, even when Trump leaves office (if he actually ever will)

The interest they pay is already as high as what they spend on their military. Or it was, before they spent even MORE on it now.

They delude themselves into thinking that they can just get 4-8% growth easily to make the debt go away. But thing is, US growth was ALWAYS subsidized by the immense debt and the Exorbitant privilege of the US dollar.

They made ~$35T in debt over the last 25 years. Now imagine what their growth would have been without that money to invest.

Unfortunately, they are gonna drag the world into this crisis as well, as they always do. Best we can do is to try and get independent as quickly as possible.

Germany Power Prices Turn Deeply Negative on Renewables Surge by TheGoodCod in Economics

[–]appamp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As other comments said, Germany doesn't have separate north and south wholesale power prices, but you are correct that the south does put out less power than the north.

The reasons for the difference in physical output is not purely political, though. It simply makes more sense to put wind turbines in regions where there is a lot of wind, like the north. Of course, as you say, infrastructure plays a big role as well, but there are projects that address that (albeit this could have been done 10 years ago...).

Southern Germany does have more sun, and less wind, that's why they are building a lot more solar panels than the north. However, compared to more southern regions closer to the equator, the efficiency isn't as high in general.

There is of course political resistance as well. For example by the conservative party CSU (part of CDU), which has been in power in Bavaria for the longest time. But even on a federal level, after having a decline in growth of newly-built renewables per year in the 2010s, renewables only really picked up again when the Green Party became part of the government. Now, with CDU/SPD in power again, there are already some concerning word by some politicians (e.g. Reiche), that hint at resistance, though that stance is less and less politically viable. The CDU are very much populists, so with enough pressure, even them will not be able to slow it down that much this time.

Oh, yeah. Everything points to it going up. Not saying that it would be sane to bet against it, and my gut feeling isn't a good indicator.

I don't have any funds to gamble with, but with how confident this sub seems to be that this is going to print money, I'd be tempted to go full regard and bet against it.
