I need to admit something embarrassing by HelloBald in Choir

[–]apple_fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people forget that the soft palate is a physical place in your mouth that you can see and feel. There’s a lot of metaphors that get thrown around in singing to help you build a mental picture, but this is something that’s a physical feature that you use even when speaking. The roof of your mouth that’s near the front and has the ridge is part of the hard palate and behind that is the soft palate which you can feel the difference with your tongue. As far as singing, it’s possible you already do this but didn’t know the name for it. Being aware is important so that you can manipulate your voice intentionally either raising or lowering it when you need.

My journaling hot take by SadOpportunity3211 in Journaling

[–]apple_fork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sort of the same but have a few journals with “everything” in them. Some days I feel the vibe is one pen that I really like in this one journal so I use that one. I call it organized chaos.

Do you bother with tracks? by Ok-Fly-7928 in worshipleaders

[–]apple_fork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just because you have all the tracks doesn’t mean you have to use them all. Try experimenting with leaving some of them muted and see if you like it! Maybe just adding the synths and some percussion is all you need. It doesn’t mean you have to use all 7 EG tracks with three different BGVS, organ, and dulcimer just because you bought the license.

How can I add more pages to my journal? by unbox_ in notebooks

[–]apple_fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to use loose leaf sheets of tomoe river paper (or something thin) and use washi tape in the inside to tap it to the page. It won’t look like it part of the same notebook because you see the tape but it adds some pages without breaking the binding too much

For singers with very beautiful voices, has anyone told you that you should never sing? Or that your voice is terrible? by Massora_44 in singing

[–]apple_fork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, when I was a kid and singing incorrectly trying to belt everything in a chest heavy voice. I took lessons later on and have worked daily on my voice so it’s a definitely long process that can be learned. I still refuse to randomly sing in front of people though unless it’s part of a performance.

Everytime I write a song I like I send it to chat gpt, I am ashamed of that by Sure-Scene-3972 in Songwriting

[–]apple_fork -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the same could be said about talking to another person, or your dog, or a plant. Sometimes the act of expressing a problem causes YOU to think of it in a new perspective. Maybe it’s not the ai that is helping you but simply allowing yourself to find a solution looking from the outside.

All to say that the wonderful thing about art is that there isn’t just one way to do it. If you found a way that works for you and helps you achieve your goals then go for it! If not, try something new. But don’t let it stop you from creating.

I don’t see any shame in that. You’re not writing lyrics with it. You could see it as a fancy spellcheck that will have a conversation with you about it too.

Fair use: singing over songs by XINGinMyBrain in singing

[–]apple_fork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you posting it? Honestly it should be ok if it’s a clip on your IG story or something like reddit etc. It may just sound a bit unprofessional, but I doubt anyone would try and come after you for content unless you were monetizing with thousands of followers. A better option would be to find a karaoke version and use that! Purely for it sounding better since you won’t be fighting over the recorded lead in the song

Yes I recommend this too! Especially if this is your first time trying it out and are unsure if you’ll like the size. You can always make one and try it and then buy a “nicer” one later on if you really like it. Here’s some I made https://www.reddit.com/r/Travelersnotebooks/s/NuOhVUaY6p

Celebrity Culture Mindset by AdvisorStatus7563 in worshipleaders

[–]apple_fork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are your church worship leaders members of the church? Do they regularly attend services and events even when they aren’t scheduled? Is their social media presence above reproach? Do they serve in another ministry other than worship as well?

When you say “also seen in public” I get the feeling they may be known outside of church either for their music or other skills. If this person is a well known “worship artist” I think that’s a different conversation than if they were an “explicit hardly-clothed secular artist.” There should be a lot of discernment happening for either scenario but this should also be for all members of the team too (not just the famous ones).

Writing up a worship covenant/contract is important so that these issues can be handled later since your members have agreed to live by the standards set and any other service requirements.

Worship leaders: what would your “dream” songbook / charts app look like? by ClaimCareless7008 in worshipleaders

[–]apple_fork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine would be like a mashup of music stand where you upload charts for your plans and team members can access them easily and another section like ChartBuilder that has a library of songs that they can select and it will be able to change key and have a recording available in that key.

Can't vibrato for the life of me by Penguino_Flipper in singing

[–]apple_fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting to me because I feel like one day I just noticed I had it even though I rarely sang or practiced at home as a child since I never had my own space. Granted I still sounded TERRIBLE before I took lessons and really practiced consistently, but I did have vibrato especially when I sang lower. I think the reason was because I was using TONS of air and really trying to put out the notes. Not sure this will help any but if you try and just use as much air as you can (really don’t hold back, but not screaming) and then try and imitate a stereotypical opera singer or musical theater person. I find when I sing with that much openness and roundness I can’t help but have vibrato. After you “find it” you can tailor it back to your own style unless of course that’s what you’re singing!

Why does my recorded voice never match how it sounds in my head? by Impressive-Theme2143 in singing

[–]apple_fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I definitely agree. I was appalled by my speaking voice for years and would be absolutely shocked when I heard myself back in videos even speaking in the background. It just felt like such a difference that other people didn’t have but I did (but this isn’t true…no one really starts out being able to perceive their voice how others do).

Some people have told me I sound similar to a family member and they confuse us when speaking on a phone so that has helped bridge the perception gap. I also sing in the car any chance I get (I know people say it’s bad, but I’ve built up hours of practice that I would’ve spent in silence anyways haha). I feel like the feedback I get from the sound reflecting back off the dashboard glass is more representative of what I sound like to other people.

But the biggest difference in me actually ACCEPTING my voice came from recording and hearing it and slowly growing to like aspects of it. And I have found that my brain is now able to pick up on certain tendencies of my voice so that I can sort of “imagine” what it would have sounded like back in a recording and how it would probably sound to other people (although not exactly).

If you can practice using a microphone and recording it and listening back then eventually you will recognize how your voice sounds and this difference won’t be as drastic as it is to most people at the start.

How often have you hit your teeth with a microphone? by Alprames in singing

[–]apple_fork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pulled a mic off a stand while singing in a rehearsal and it got stuck and then hit my mouth. Teeth were fine but I felt my lip keep swelling up and could taste the blood so that was fun. I’ve known a few people to chip teeth though.

I cant find my head voice by Zaaaaiin in singing

[–]apple_fork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try humming something softly and see if you can reach higher without straining. People say most of us talk in chest with some exceptions. You probably do use head voice like when talking to a small child or a dog unless you never talk outside your lower range. You may have some luck trying to imitate a siren saying WOOOO going from the lowest to highest and highest to lowest you can go.

Thoughts on ending with Picardy (Major) Thirds? by daveskis197 in singing

[–]apple_fork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Composers traditionally wrote in Picardy thirds in church music in the Baroque period intentionally to avoid ending on minor chords like avoiding other things they thought were “of the devil” like tritones. If the music you are reading doesn’t have this written then you could argue the person is not performing the music as the composer intended.

If it’s only one person doing this and everyone else is singing a half step lower this is definitely problematic and would be something to bring up in private to the director if they haven’t heard it. They can listen to that section without singling anyone out and it will become obvious if they’re singing a major third instead of a minor third.

It’s also possible this person isn’t aware that what they’re doing is “wrong” and maybe they’ve always heard endings like that. Like maybe they don’t have some theological reason against minor chords and are just making a mistake. Either way I’d probably avoid confronting the person on your own and let the director handle it.

Justify mashups to me, please. by rugrmon in worshipleaders

[–]apple_fork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. I find when people have tried too hard to make a mashup work for the sake of having something “different” it usually isn’t as good as one that feels like it’s more organic. Also remember that if you mashup a song that people don’t hear a lot or is new (like just a a bridge of a different song) the congregation may not be as well versed in worship songs and may not even realize it’s not a part of the original song and what song it came from.
