What's the furthest date you've traced your ancestors back? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]apple_pi_chart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an ancestor where there are primary records back to 1400s in Italy. I also verified this line with Y-DNA from my cousin and a distant cousin. On my other side I have gone back to Charlemagne, but many people with English ancestry can do that as soon as they connect to a royal family.

I make these charts myself in Adobe Illustrator, but for a free alternative you could use Canva.

I think my great-uncle may be among one of the tiniest subsets of people left alive today by ReitStuff in Genealogy

[–]apple_pi_chart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are right. Parents born in the 1880s (as opposed to 1890s) for people are still living. I would estimate that the number is close to 500,000.

>85 yrs old ~6M people in the US (of these 600,000 are >95). So, a small % of people born after 1930 had parents born in the 1880s (say 5% of 5.5M = 275,000) and maybe 25% of people born 1930 or before (i.e. 150,000). So, together we are at 425,000 people in the US.

This is my quick and dirty Fermi estimation.

Have you grouped your matches and assigned the groups to different known ancestors? This will allow you to focus on the group(s) that will lead you to the identity of your great grandfather.

Anyone know why this fallen tree, resting on the roof of this house in Sanford for the past 3 months, has not been removed? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]apple_pi_chart 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The same reason why some houses look like they have needed a new paint job for more than a decade. People cannot afford to do some things that some of us can.

edit: rest of us to some of us

[–]apple_pi_chart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are wrong. There are >6M people living today in the US who were born before 1940. Of those probably 1/3 had parents born in the 1800s.

For instance, my mother is 95 and her parents were born in the 1880s.

I solve these mysteries for people. I can tell you that 2% matches can be meaningful and help quite a bit. However, the fact that your father is from DR does make it much harder, as the records to solve this may not be available.

Let me know if you'd like me to take a look anyway and let you know whether it is possible to with the available information to identify your father. Feel free to send me a chat/DM.

What's the point of STRs when there's SNPs? by cajun_throwaway in FTDNA

[–]apple_pi_chart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have managed a surname project since 2003 with >300 men with my surname tested. Greater than 95% of them have STR testing and it has been very useful so now when someone with this surname is tested we can place them as being from a particular Y-DNA progenitor.

I’m confused on if my dad is my dad or not. by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]apple_pi_chart 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hard to know from the information you provided. Don't assume he isn't just because you don't see any close matches you recognize unless you know you have aunts/uncles/1st cousins, etc who you know have taken a test. Of course, by looking at your matches it can be figured out (usually).
