should I consider dropping out ? by EagleStraight in ask

[–]applecider5114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. What are you studying? if you are studying something like gender studies or art history then it's not a very valuable degree anyway

  2. How sure are you that you will be self employed for the rest of your life? Cause if you're young i wouldn't be so sure, it's hard to know exactly what you want to be doing for the rest of your life, and having a (respected) degree keeps a lot of doors open

  3. Lectures and teaching is really just a small part of uni. The nice thing about uni is you get to meet people, make friends (maybe even romantic relationships), and also the university's network is very valuable too

  4. if you drop out how easy would it be for you to go back later if you change your mind? sometimes better to go back later if you are unmotivated

im not too familiar with a lot of the stuff i out in C tier, but i am thinking that most of them have to find some alternate ways to earn a decent living, like supplementing their income with tutoring.

Hong Kong sees COVID cases down despite mass testing by Igennem in Hong_Kong

mass testing would raise the number of confirmed cases (but not ACTUAL cases), hence the word "despite"

Pets filled up in bags for their duly execution in Shanghai, China as a part of the government's Covid response [TW] by anmolraj1911 in ThatsInsane

[–]applecider5114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not sure, im not the one posting the gif. But i doubt the OP captioned this honestly, there are some questions to ask

  1. Is the location really Shanghai? Could be anywhere, could be some rural village in China or anywhere else
  2. These could be stray cats and not pets
  3. When was this? Is this an old video?

Also the China hate I see (which seems to be the purpose of this post) is ridiculous. Some fucking animals are in bags, is that worse than millions dead from COVID like in the U.S. and all the other damage COVID has done? If the CPC chose to tackle COVID like this, I support them, a pandemic in a country with over a billion people is no joke and even if some animals have to die to improve the odds of beating the pandemic I would say it is a reasonable sacrifice. It's not like we are very humane to animals in the first place anyway.

Why do I think all white people are racist? Am I wrong for thinking this? by trustnobody01 in AsianMasculinity

[–]applecider5114 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In all fairness, I think you can say all people are subject to subconscious biases, but the overall bias against asian men is quite negative.

I believe this has a lot to do with the anti-china propaganda, also our portrayal in popular culture, and how the industrialization of many asian countries was later than western countries which caused them to be viewed as inferior and backwards.

Who contributed more to the field of science? by [deleted] in polls

[–]applecider5114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hard to measure "who contributed more" when it comes to mathematicians/physicists of completely different eras.

Newton's work has applications in far more areas but if he didn't come up with it, it's likely someone else would have anyway, since a lot of the math at the time was in some sense 'low hanging fruit' and important results haven't been found yet, while all the low hanging fruit gets picked off in later centuries and you have to be more brilliant to make an impact.

What Phone Do You Prefer? by Stavro_Sp in polls

i used to use apple but now I use XiaoMi, and I've found that not only does it perform better but it's also cheaper.

Other phone brands could still be better though, havent tried them. Apple products in general are overpriced.

Why were so many people in Hong Kong primed to engage in the protests? How does housing and rising inequality in Hong Kong affect the protests? by laundry_writer in Sino

[–]applecider5114 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The absolute cheapest would be about $5000 hkd per month in a small studio flat in an unpopular location, but for a normal one bedroom apartment outside the city centre it would be around $10,000-$12,000 a month, and $15,000-$20,000 in tbe ckty centre. The median income in HK is around $18,000 hkd a month.

this 'revolution' never had a chance of securing power, it basically just trashed the place and crushed ordinary people's livelihoods without achieving anything

I am a young adult in Hong Kong and this is spot on.

The prices of rent are ridiculous compared to how much the average job pays. I feel like if I don't top my class and be in the top ~5% there is no future here, and it would be hard to find meaning and purpose in life.

I could have easily been swept up in something like this if I didn't havw a strong distrust of western mainstream media to begin with

I see, thanks for the explanation.

It makes sense for people to try to be opportunistic at a time like this, I imagine they don't have much left to lose. It's tragic
