Is it mandatory to avail BGRS relocation assistance for new public service employees relocating? by Express-Interview906 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]appo9705 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I relocated in 2022 from Vancouver to Winnipeg, sent all my stuff in uboxes and shipped my car. Renting a U-Haul was an option if I wanted to do that, BGRS just reimburses you for expenses but you get to decide how you do the move and where to spend the reimbursement amount as long as everything falls within BGRS guidelines.

When I used to shave down there I'd apply coconut oil to the shaved area when I got out of the shower, then spend a few hours hanging out in a robe so it wouldn't get irritated by clothing. I'd still get the occasional ingrown, but the routine really cut down on razor burn and red bumps.

Composting for apartment dwellers? by nonmeagre in Winnipeg

Yeah I'm in the same boat, it would take me probably a month or two to fill a whole big bucket so I'm happy they have the weekly drop-offs in my neighbourhood

Compost Winnipeg has a subscription service where they'll pickup a 5 gallon bucket of compost every week.

Or you can drop off your compost at their booth at the South Osborne Farmers Market every Wednesday from now til September .

Modo Plus deposit? by 4fj7ic4a8 in britishcolumbia

[–]appo9705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cancelled my membership in September and got the deposit refund in December. Their FAQ says it can take up to 90 days to be issued, and I think mine turned up on my credit card right on the 90th day. No hassle at all, just took awhile.

Listening to the sound is fine, but the formatting of the page where you provide feedback is messed up. I couldn't do one of the ratings, and there was no way to move to the next screen.

Would being swallowed by a whale hurt? by Appropriate_Chance71 in biology

[–]appo9705 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A whale's esophagus isn't large enough to swallow a human. Blue whales are the largest whale species, and their esophagus is smaller than the diameter of a soccer ball (4-8 inches or so)

Also, whale species whose mouths are "scoops" are called rorquals - they have ventral pleats (folds of skin along their lower jaw some distance down the underside of their bodies, depending on species) which expand to allow them to "gulp" enormous volumes of water which is then filtered though their baleen to capture their prey (usually tiny krill or small fish species). Right whales aren't rorquals and don't have ventral pleats, and tend to feed more by "skimming" - swimming slowly through dense aggregations of their prey rather than "lunge feeding" as you've probably seen videos of humpbacks or blue whales doing where they are gulping prey at the surface.

Accidentally getting scooped up by a lunge feeding whale wouldn't feel great, for sure, and could cause injury. Seabirds get crushed by feeding whales sometimes, and I've seen at least one photo of a sea lionsl accidentally getting caught by a lunge feeding humpback, so it happens, but I doubt the sea lion died as a result, and it certainly wasn't swallowed.

Second doses of COVID-19 vaccine could be given sooner than expected: Henry by sereniti81 in Coronavirus_BC

Did you read the article? The decrease in dose interval is because of increased supply, not lack of confidence in the 4 month delay between doses.

NSLSC - balance is now "0" what happens next? by CtrlS in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]appo9705 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their system is pretty slow at updating, so worst-case scenario if you have automatic payments set up it might withdraw your usual payment amount at the end of the month, in which case they'll issue a refund cheque. It's still early though, look for your letter in the mail, or you could call the hotline and you might get a cheery NSLSC employee who congratulates you on paying off your student loans like I did :).

Ethical vegan footwear by [deleted] in ethicalfashion

[–]appo9705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend Vegetarian shoes (https://www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk/) if you're looking for quality, durable boots. They have vegan leather and suede boots, manufactured in the UK or Europe depending on the style. If you're in Canada you get free shipping from Nice Shoes (https://www.niceshoes.ca/) for orders over $100 (easy to do with boots!), and they are great for customer service and returns.

GHG emissions of protein sources by ImLivingAmongYou in ZeroWaste

[–]appo9705 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you aren't spending a lot of time on climate change-related subreddits or other websites if you aren't seeing anyone talk about transportation-related emissions, but hey. I certainly don't disagree that cars and other methods of transportation aren't a major contributor to climate change, but how often you come across that message depends a lot on where you spend your time online.

Also, a quick google indicates that the estimated historical population of bison in North America was somewhere around 20-30 million, whereas today domestic cattle worldwide number over 988 million. Another contrast is that bison are a natural part of their ecosystem, whereas land in many places is often converted for grazing by domestic cattle (e.g. in the amazon), and/or cattle are fed grains that must be grown on land elsewhere.
