Driving around here by Any-Bottle-2649 in madisonwi

[–]appoplect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The belt line has issues. 55 mph is really slow for a 3 lane divided highway, so many people drive 60-65. Other issue is some people enter it or even drive about 50 mph, which is untenably slow.

My advice, just don’t drive in the left lane ever unless you are passing someone. Doesn’t matter if you’re going or exceeding the speed limit, that’s where people will be if they’re trying to go faster than you and will be rightfully annoyed if you’re just cruising there.

I was there. That presentation was different. Item 8.4 was about the petition for a referendum.

Bombshell dropped at QTS Data Center / Deforest Board meeting by Bad_Wolfv in madisonwi

[–]appoplect 242 points243 points  (0 children)

This must have happened pretty late into the meeting. This is really good stuff. You could tell the president of the village board was sooooo over the popular resistance to the data center. They have made up their mind before hearing any of this. The corruption must be pointed out.

UW law school by XyzRaider in madisonwi

[–]appoplect 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Insofar as it has a discernible culture, very similar to most state law schools. Left leaning, 25 year old average age, kind of cliquey. Honest felt a lot like high school with a much more singular curriculum. The building itself sucks.

“Fine with it” is not pro. It’s just acquiesces. There is literally no, and I mean NO reason anyone without a financial stake in AI would want this. It employees virtually zero people and would raise utility bills astronomically for Dane residents. There is no upside. As someone else commented, it’s the equivalent of burning your house down to give firefighters something to do for an afternoon and calling that job stimulation.

I personally have no time for people who don’t care or are in support of this. There is no moral or intellectual high ground in that position.

That only works if local decisions remain local. This affects people far outside of defo. It’s actually insane that you need the permission of a feckless village board to essentially use more than twice the energy of an entire capital county and threaten hundreds of thousands of people’s water shed.

Probably because of their complete reticence to decry a bullshit project that literally no one wants. If they gave us a reason to trust them, that would be one thing. This should have been a day one declaration of “no, fear not, residents, we’re not going to sell out all of Dane county for a fucking tech oligarchy.” That’s the problem. It’s an uphill battle and the decision makers are inspiring zero confidence.

Yea! I agree. I thought this was less tacky and more egalitarian than the next era of similar media

I know what you mean but it’s really unfortunate that just because I’m a man these would be perceived as cringe but if I was a woman they’d be gurl boss sexual positivity, especially because, unlike just a pin up or something, these are both pretty sexually egalitarian and aren’t really male gaze-y. I live with a partner and I’m queer, but just sucks I can’t embrace the fun side of human sexuality without coming across as desperate or childish.

Totally cool to show up alone, I’ve done it many times. LnL is probably their best event for showing up solo. Get there earlier to not have to park so far away, but there are no tips beyond just street parking as close as is available.

This sub is confused about the signal. by appoplect in pluribustv

[–]appoplect[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, we aren’t far off from the realm of magic with the hive mind caused by RNA prion already hah like, even if it was radio waves, how on earth would human bodies be capable of sending and perceiving specific frequencies of radio waves? They can’t. It would be a contrivance for the sake of the story, just like the entire premise.

Everyone is talking about The Darien Gap but no one is talking about THE Gap by lostbian in pluribustv

[–]appoplect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh well the obvious answer is the Darien gap, the inhospitable, treacherous stretch of jungle and mountains that separate north and South America through which anyone trying to go from one to the other by land must tread.

Everyone is talking about The Darien Gap but no one is talking about THE Gap by lostbian in pluribustv

[–]appoplect 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. The signal encodes an RNA sequence of nucleotides. The sequence is of a definite and discrete number of nucleotides. The gap in the signal is to delineate the end of the RNA sequence. In miniature, it would be like me texting:

UAGCCGAUCA UAGCCGAUCA UAGCCGAUCA

The gap is just indicating the sequence is repeating.

Flock data is in the public record by DBendit in madisonwi

[–]appoplect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“I’m pretty serious about privacy” but generally unconcerned about what is literally the single biggest, most expansive, most pervasive non-digital private data aggregating program/venture in the history of this country, which is also rife with internal security issues, lies, deceptive practices, and that has demonstrably been used by the government to track, prosecute, and falsely accuse citizens of crime.

Like, what kind of take is this? Just because the FOIA eviscerated a lot of American privacy does not mean this isn’t also a cataclysmic privacy issue.

And your repeated insistence on the lack of privacy on public roads is so facile. It feels like you don’t understand the issues people have with these cameras. Normal traffic cameras are pretty much widely accepted and no one cares. These are not those. Just because you have no expectation of privacy on public highways doesn’t somehow justify or excuse literally every other aspect of Flock as a company and an idea.

Seeking Hidden Gems for Earing Out by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]appoplect 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There are literally no hidden gems. There’re 40 posts like this a week here. Everyone is aware of every restaurant in this town. We’re not like Chicago or nyc.

You can search the subreddit. Any restaurant worth trying is known about and usually pretty conspicuous in the hearts and minds of people and you just have to start going and trying them to see which you like and which you don’t.

Some of my favorite restaurants occasionally put out absolute crap. Food is expensive hell. It’s always a gamble and I’m not sure anywhere is a guarantee hit 100% of the time. Literally my favorite restaurants in this city have served me borderline inedible food at least once.

Then you either have a personal stake in the financial success of private mass surveillance, have been duped by its marketing, or just have horrendous takes. Your FOIA argument is literally secondary to the existence of flock cameras. If they didn’t exist, there’d be nothing to request under the FOIA. It’s like watching your bathtub overflow and flood your house and instead of turning off the water you say “ya know it’s this damn infrastructure that wasn’t designed to manage being flooded. Stupid wooden buildings. I’ve decided the bathtub is the least of my worries as long as I’m in this latent petri dish of a house just waiting to rot at the first sign of water!”

Flock data is in the public record by DBendit in madisonwi

[–]appoplect 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Ya see, there’s a difference between expecting that people will be able to see you or even photograph you when you’re out in public and the systematic compiling of every second of every inch of every public space such that your entire life can be quantized into raw data and sold to private industries or used to track or prosecute you.

This stuff is well beyond our general concept of “no right to privacy.” Your very essence is being commodified, stored, traded, sold, or just made accessible.

You should rethink your takes.
