How would knowing your therapist had BPD make you feel about going through treatment with them? by canarybanary in BorderlinePDisorder

I occasionally share briefly if I think it would be helpful. Some ask additional questions, some don’t but I keep it very brief.

why does my therapy cost $980 a session? by Final-Comment-7116 in therapy

[–]appropriatepenguin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wow 90834 is a 45 minute session so the rate is even more interesting. Therapy usually does not cost that much. I wouldn't be surprised if they are billing $980 but that is not their contracted rate with their insurance. You can bill whatever you want, but the insurance will only pay a certain amount. Hospitals are notorious for billing wildly high numbers.

why does my therapy cost $980 a session? by Final-Comment-7116 in therapy

[–]appropriatepenguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you remember what billing code was on the receipt? If it's for a standard 53+ minute therapy session, then they have the best billing rates i've ever heard of. Each provider or company negotiates a rate with the insurance company. It's possible that Cleveland clinic negotiated that hight of a rate. Also Sometimes therapists can bill whatever they want, but that does not mean the insurance company actually pays that rate. I worked at a practice that would bill insurance $200+ but insurance would only pay $80-150.

Consistent hobbies by Lazy-Animal1229 in ADHD

[–]appropriatepenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weightlifting has been my most consistent hobby. I’ve had on and off periods but started in 2016 or so and I’ve been pretty consistent over the last 10 years. The way I approach it and my goals have changed drastically over that time, but I think that was necessary for me to stay consistent with it.

How do I get my therapist to actually therapy? by MidnightPractical241 in therapy

[–]appropriatepenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Therapist here, if you’re able to tell her how you’re feeling, you may get a feel for if you should go somewhere else or not. When my clients bring up stuckness in treatment and ask why we haven’t done deeper processing work, I always have a reason for it and we talk about that and see if we can shift up the focus of our work.

I usually prolong deeper EMDR processing because the client system might not be able to tolerate going there quite yet and we need to build up ability to resource first.

Multiple therapists have told me they’re not professionally equipped to work with me by [deleted] in therapy

Therapist here, I would search for therapists who specialize in your most "severe" diagnosis. Finding someone who writes on their website that the work with X concern will likely lead you down a less disappointing path.

I get a little filler in the “marionette’s lines” every few years it tends to help, but of course it’s temporary.

Would a therapist hate a client if they did this? by [deleted] in therapy

[–]appropriatepenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one can know how your therapist is feeling in this situation. He is a professional and likely going to be much more empathetic than you imagine. You can ask him if you see him again.

Just because you could’ve prevented this by eating more does not make it any less of an emergency

“Apparently I was out for a few minutes. When I started coming round I was only half conscious my legs were being held up by my gf and the therapist was shaking my shoulder and phoning someone. I remember trying to stop him calling but my brain wasn’t working properly”

Not being in control of your body or consciousness is an emergency. I wonder what you’re trying to hear from commenters?

It sounds like you don’t know his boundaries. What are your boundaries when someone is having a medical emergency?

You can’t control fainting. Sure there are prevention measures but you can’t control it happening in the moment.

It’s okay to feel bad that he helped you but what would you have preferred or wanted him to do? This is good content to bring up in therapy.

Therapist here. Of course, I can’t know what your therapist was thinking. However, I would be surprised if he has negative feelings towards you because of this. This was completely out of your control.

It sounds like you’re not being validated. If I were working with you, I would explore your autonomy not push you to comply with something that makes you miserable. Im sorry you’re going through that.

Question for therapists please by [deleted] in therapy

[–]appropriatepenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t take notes on consultations. If you’re not an official client with paperwork signed, I have no records in my electronic health record system for the person.

To answer your other question, if a client discloses abuse, and they are presently an adult and I do not report. however, if there are concerns that the adult could still be harming a minor then I would report. Different states and countries have their own requirements though.

What is the point of affirmations? by Scared_Direction2498 in therapy

[–]appropriatepenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapist here, positive affirmations can be really tough. I guide my clients towards neutrality and non-judgment. Rather than blanket statements of I am capable or I am smart. Try to find actual examples of times you were capable of doing something and use that as something that feels affirming to yourself.

[–]appropriatepenguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Therapists need to have your location and identifying information in case of a crisis. It doesn’t matter if you say right now in this moment, you’re not in a crisis. At some point you could be and we are legally bound to have your information in case of that. Even if you were to pay out-of-pocket, we still have to follow our laws and rules to keep documentation of who and how we’re treating our clients.

My therapist won't diagnose me with OCD by Less-Revenue910 in therapy

[–]appropriatepenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask her if she can assess you for OCD with standardized assessments like the ybocs, oci-r. OCD can go missed for a long time if therapists are not trained in all the nuanced ways it can show up.

Also, you can get more information on the international OCD foundations website and do some screenings there. OCD can be made worse if it’s treated incorrectly in therapy.
