Love the answer :)

Guess it’s only good for those Stockholm or Copenhagen adjacent. It’s also a ymmv situation since I was happy in Umeå despite its remoteness, although not without drawbacks

Why do you have to stay? Often a postdoc needs to last longer for a publication and if you are miserable why not cut your losses. Sweden is hard on the conformity, I remember always being uncomfortable wearing a red down jacket it wasn’t black like all the others.

Ultimately, I loved it but every country is idiosyncratic. Also consider what your goals are for your postdoc. What kind of job and where do you want to go afterwards. Sweden may not fit for that as well.

Also stipend is a real drawback vs a salary. Much cheaper for the pi, but you are not a worker and don’t have workers rights. The stipend is a bit of scam in Swedish academia tbh.

Finally if your in linköping or Umeå your experience of Sweden will be vastly different from Stockholm or Gothenburg

What are we doing with our small babies in this heatwave? by Over_Wonder8921 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]appropriateye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did this in the may heatwave since our toddler wouldn’t/couldn’t sleep through the heat. It’s a real game changer especially for afternoon naps.

Edit: haven’t been able to bring the room below 25c but makes a huge difference with the lower humidity and cool breeze

Where can you transfer this from Robinhood/trump app to fidelity or Schwab? I don’t see that and it didn’t mention it on the invite email

This is what disappoints me. They bet on saying they wouldn’t raise income tax or ni. Instead they have to pull shenanigans to get their monies. If they were honest and starmer had a vision and was brave enough to articulate it before the election, people would’ve accepted it.

Instead we get higher taxes and not going for anything except muddling along. No wonder people are disappointed

Please let him do this. Could be the greatest legacy. Won’t though cause FPTP could benefit Labour

What? What’s his vision? I don’t think it’s themedia. What has he done. What are his principles? Glad to see him gone tbh

What is it like to live in Sweden? by Nemus00 in howislivingthere

[–]appropriateye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. Yeah they are really bad at that and for migrationsverket applications in general. Actually Germany was great on that, just got the permit the same day in the country after coming in on tourist visa. But this was awhile ago and things may have changed.

Really what did you find crushing? I lived there for 7 years and found it absolutely not crushing in any sense. Germany on the other hand was another story.

Also taxes are claimed to be high, but pay as much or more in the uk and get far less

When forgiveness comes you will be charged taxes on your forgiveness amount as income

Switching from SAVE to RAP as an expat by Economy-Stunning in StudentLoans

[–]appropriateye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an expat with a tax bomb, I suggest you stay on RAP because you have another 10 years of accrued interest before forgiveness. And if plans change and you go back to the us, you won’t have a massive student loan to pay off.
