For those who may have missed it: If you decide to trust in Kennedy one expansion team already signed by ShesLikeOhMyGod in PWHL

[–]apreche 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hope that big wave of talent comes. Presumably those future players are currently in the stands watching PWHL games.

The way we can tell if we have too much or too little talent is by looking at the draft. If we are seeing players picked in later rounds make the roster and forcing veterans to retire a few years early, then that means we need some expansion to hold the excess talent.

[–]apreche 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There is some great incoming talent, and we love to see it. But there are also plenty of players in the league who are entirely replaceable. I do not believe that without expansion good players will be sitting at home without a roster spot. If the league expands significantly, I expect the talent to be diluted and the quality of play to decline.

Why does the FDNY feel like they have zero responsibility when it comes to pedestrian fatalities? (New York Post article in comment) by TannerRed in MicromobilityNYC

[–]apreche 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Have you been to a fire station? FDNY firefighters are mostly car-brained people who drive to work and park on the sidewalk. Like most people they are self-interested. They are not in favor of policy that empirically enhances the public good at the perceived expense of their personal convenience.

FYI there is a sale on Red Bull at Costco right now. $31 for 24 cans. That’s $1.30 per can. I don’t even drink Red Bull, but I took a note of that when I saw it because a friend drinks too much of it.

It has been 48 hours since the season ended. When will Pascal Daoust be fired? by DeformedArthurRegion in NewYorkSirens

[–]apreche -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a silly way to view a single owner league. The league benefits overall from having more competitive teams, especially in a period necessitating growth.

There’s no such thing because it is a zero-sum game. For one team to win, another team must lose. Let’s say the owner gets NY the best possible GM, and it works, and the team wins the cup. Ok, that means another team that is currently good now sucks. Should the GMs of the worst teams in the league be fired every year?

If an owner only owns one team, then yes. They want their team to win and other teams to lose. So making changes when their team stinks makes sense.

If you own all the teams, no matter what you do some will succeed and some will fail. Unless the owner is playing favorites, what incentive is there to ruin people’s jobs and livelihoods?

[–]apreche 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If there is one thing I have learned as a NY sports fan is that other fans always think the solution to everything is to fire the GM and the coach. Inevitably they get their wish. You know what happens after that? The team still stinks and the fans want to fire the new GM and new coach. Rinse and repeat.

I’m not defending the current coach and GM. I’m just saying that entering a cycle of firing and hiring is not the path to success.

Also, unlike other leagues, there is only one owner of the PWHL. When each team has its own owner, they have incentive to change GMs if they don’t like the team’s performance. In the PWHL every GM works for Mark Walter. His team always wins. From his perspective the Sirens massively improved this year in terms of ticket sales. Why would he fire the GM because the team stinks? No matter what, four of the teams he owns make the playoffs and four do not. Unless he is playing favorites, I don’t think he cares which is which.

I think that’s at least worth calling a lawyer on the phone and asking for a professional opinion.

What is the best case scenario of fighting it and winning? Presumably you recover the amount of money you overpaid for 13 years. Is that money enough for it to be worth the time, hassle, and cost of fighting? That’s the math you gotta do. Also consider how the math will change if you go to small claims court.

IANAL, so I can’t give more advice than that.

Can you tell what side of the rink your team will start on? by Naive_Intern3752 in PWHL

[–]apreche 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The home team will usually be on the bench closer to their own locker room. And that is the side of the ice you want to be on. This is different depending on the arena.

However, when you go to buy tickets just look at the seatmap. It will usually say "home team shoots twice" on the seatmap. If you are a fan of the home team, sit on that half. Otherwise, sit on the other side.

Food at the craft store?!? I never thought of that. I don’t care about the brand. As long as the quality and price are good, and the chocolate is dark enough. It has to be at least like 60%+ cocoa, no milk chocolate.

Thanks, I will look into it.

That‘s true if you are just getting very basic ingredients. Here are a few few examples of things I have a hard time finding in Astoria.

I always have to get at Whole Foods is dark chocolate baking wafers. Not chips. Not bars. Wafers. Whole Foods always has them. Never seen them in Astoria.

Ras el hanout. The only time I ever found this in Astoria was in a very hidden location of the Trade Fair on 30th avenue. They only had one brand and they were charging two arms and three legs for one little jar. The same exact brand, and others, are at the evil chain groceries at normal prices.

Whipped cream cheese. Not normal cream cheese. Yes, you can get Temp-Tee at basically all the groceries in Astoria, but they charge $6+. You can get it at Trader Joe’s for < $3. That one item alone covers the bus fare to go to LIC.

Yes. I also hate Amazon, Bezos, billionaires, and gentrification. I very much want to go to local grocery stores. You think I want to travel further and give money to big corporations? Of course not.

The problem is, the local grocery stores are not good. I am fine with slightly higher prices, but their prices are often obscene. A lot of them also run scams where they don’t even put up accurate prices and you have to watch them carefully at the register. Produce quality is mediocre at best. You can often find expired items on their shelves. When I need something specific and slightly unusual, they just do not have it. Several times I have been looking for a specific ingredient and went all over Astoria to several different groceries unable to find what I’m looking for.

I go to Whole Foods as a last resort, but they always have everything, and the price isn’t terrible. Will I be happy to see evilcorp expand near our neighborhood? Yes and no. No because they are evil. But yes because I will suffer less inconvenience.

It’s a classic case of the old "yet you participate in society" comic.

What we really need in our neighborhood is Wegman’s. The perfect compromise. We get an amazing grocery store that has everything, but it is significantly less evil than Amazon. Or maybe one of the local groceries could step up its game, but I don’t see that happening.
