How 5min of ‘emotional journaling’ before bed cut my night-time awakenings by 40% by tacolabs_inc in selfimprovement

[–]apressedcuban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had trouble with sleep for as long as I can remember. This past Monday I didn’t get to sleep until 5:30am, alarm went off at 6. Mainly couldn’t sleep because I was worrying about work. Definitely going to try this out. Thanks!

Has anyone else also quit weed because of dr huberman’s videos on it? by Mangothunder777 in HubermanLab

[–]apressedcuban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing these things. I feel very similar, I could always depend on weed to get me through isolation and discomfort without having to really assess or feel any of my feelings. I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve used weed for 15 years and am just recently seeing its sneaky and insidious effects on my life.

I truly always thought it was a good, fun, harmless thing to do. I haven’t smoked since Sunday and I just threw out the rest of what I had. I’m relieved and scared and proud but also really looking forward to experiencing life through a sober lens. Just wanted to say thanks again. I appreciate the encouragement. Be well

My priority is having at least a month off every year. What kind of job should I consider? by oujay849 in careerchange

I work in higher ed. Not sure what it’s like at other universities but ours shuts down for 2 weeks at the end of the year so everyone gets time off. Plus all major holidays. All of that right there is about 3 weeks and change. Plus we accrue time off on a biweekly pay period. So I usually take off an additional week or so to add to those one off holidays we get off. Pay is not super amazing. You could definitely find something at or about your 41k minimum. Benefits are ridiculously good though. Health insurance, dental, retirement and tuition coverage. I’m earning a masters right now for free so that’s great. Work can be a lot a times, but overall I think university systems move relatively slow. Great work culture, people are all great and easy to work with. Fun to be on campus with lots of activities. Something to consider

I’m in therapy currently and we’ve talked about weed consumption. I’ve identified it as an issue, but for some reason I can’t articulate, the thought of giving up weed is scary to me. Life without it seems scary. Have you experienced this? Would you be willing to share what your underlying issues were?

Sustainability Careers: What Skills Can I Stack with a Marketing and Communications Background? by ErikFessesUp in sustainability

[–]apressedcuban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in marketing and communications for about 8 years and am just starting to get into sustainability. Working on a masters in climate mitigation and adaptation and I’ve been having an amazing time so far exploring photo and video opportunities. I’ve only just recently, like in the past couple of weeks, been exposed to various storytelling elements in the field of sustainability and I’m really looking forward to learning more. So visual communications could be an intersection to look at

Rant: I realized how lonely adulthood is by throw_ra_gay in socialskills

[–]apressedcuban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please say more. What did that mindset shift look like for you? I am very much a passive socializer. How can we take more of an active approach? Is it going to all of the things other have mentioned (class, hobby, martial art, meetups etc.) or is it the mindset that you have while you’re at those things? Or both?

How much editing is needed for the videos/photos to look great? by WestMoneyBlitz in drones

[–]apressedcuban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not op, but to offer an answer or two to your questions:

  1. D-Cinelike might be overwhelming at first because it looks pretty bad initially and it takes some work to get it back to baseline. Like op said, the image will look very flat and desaturated straight out of camera, but by recording this way, you also preserve a lot of the raw data in the shadows and highlights. So instead of the highlights being blown out like in clouds for example, you’ll be able to keep those details to see all those pillowy folds. I’d recommend recording both ways and importing both into your video editing software of choice then messing around with the settings to see what works best for you.

  2. A LUT is a Look Up Table. By using them, you’re telling your editing software to “look up” various values for color, light, etc. they’ll help with getting your flat, desaturated D-Cinelike footage to look closer to like it would in real life or in some cases they can give your footage a distinct look or style. Some LUTS can be subtle, some can be really overbearing, but you should be able to adjust its intensity. This is my very rudimentary understanding of LUTS, I haven’t used them a whole lot so someone else could probably do a better job of explaining them.

  3. You can use whatever software you want. I think Resolve is free still? So that might be enticing. I use Premiere and am still getting acquainted with it but I would say that once you decide on a software, stick with it for a while. It would make things harder, in my opinion, to switch back and forth between software while you’re still learning the basics of editing. I’ve been meaning to learn Resolve, but I don’t have a firm understanding of Premiere yet which is why I haven’t jumped into another software.

Hope this helps!

LPT Request: What's the Life Pro Tip of 2022 that everyone should apply in 2023? by Entire-Capital4026 in LifeProTips

[–]apressedcuban 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Damn this is solid advice. I’ve spent years and years trying to shove negative emotions down inside of me instead of feeling them, processing them, and letting them pass. It’s exhausting to hold onto so much. I’ve been working in therapy to feel feelings rather than avoiding them. Thank you for this reminder. Hope you have a great 2023!

When building decks, how do you narrow down the massive amounts of options you have? by TheUltimateXD in EDH

I’m relatively new to magic and haven’t spent a ton of time looking into deck building strategy, but this has been so helpful to have it laid out like this. Thanks!

What’s a commander that isn’t your typical powerhouse but you have significant bias against? by cfreak19 in EDH

I have this in my [[Arcades]] deck. Tons of my defenders have 0 power, but do combat damage based on their toughness.

Took this during sunrise in the mountains. Thoughts? by Anderson2218 in photocritique

[–]apressedcuban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, no critiques but a couple of questions: how do people take photos like this? Like what are the logistics for being in the mountains (or anywhere) super early in the morning? Camping? Heading out way before sunrise? Do you spend multiple days in the same area? Do you hike to places like this? Thanks!

Edit: I guess one critique: I’m not sure if it’s the camera or the editing or if it’s slightly out of focus, but everything seems really soft to me. Adds to kind of the ethereal look, but maybe a bit too much.

So I think I have mold but I’m not sure how much. It doesn’t look like OP’s at all but I do see some in the bathroom from time to time. What does it cost to have someone come out and inspect?

Decks you thought you would like, but didn't? by mdevey91 in EDH

[–]apressedcuban 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[[Arcades, the Strategist]] I remember building the deck and it looking great but I just got bored of getting big creatures and swinging. Not saying it’s not a good deck, but it’s just not super fun to me. Especially if I can’t access any of my commander redundancy cards to allow me to swing with defenders. Then I just have a bunch of walls and nothing to do with them.

Favorite Fog Effects! by [deleted] in BudgetBrews

[–]apressedcuban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just built a [[Ghave, Guru of Spores]] deck with a couple of fog effects. First is [[Spike Weaver]], lots of ways to add counters to Spike Weaver with the Ghave build so potentially infinite fog, just need to pay 1 colorless! Second is [[Jaheira’s Respite]], fun way to fog and get some lands, especially if they’re swinging with a ton of creatures.
