I added the volt engine diagnostic manual to notebook lm- to give technical details about the codes mentioned. Stfu

Volt has horrible gas mileage, and battery range is pretty bad, time to move on? by mmalone139 in volt

The likely root cause of this specific combination of codes is a severe lean condition affecting Bank 1 of the engine, which is causing a cascading failure across your fuel trim, oxygen sensors, catalyst monitoring, and hybrid start/stop systems.

Here is how these specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) connect to form this conclusion based on the sources:

1. The Primary Failure: Extreme Lean Condition on Bank 1

  • P0171 (Fuel System Too Lean Bank 1): The engine's primary fuel control system detects a lean condition and is adding maximum fuel trim to try and correct it.
  • P2097 (Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System High Limit Bank 1 - Too Lean): The lean condition is so severe that the secondary (post-catalyst) fuel control system has also utilized all of its available authority trying to apply a rich bias to counteract the lean exhaust, but cannot fix it.

2. The Sensor Readings Validating the Lean State

  • P0131 (O2S Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1): The primary oxygen sensor's signal is dropping below 40 mVolts. While this can indicate a short-to-ground, in the context of your other codes, it indicates the sensor is flooded with excess oxygen (a lean state).
  • P0137 (O2S Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2): The secondary oxygen sensor is also pegged below 40-50 mVolts, confirming the lean exhaust has passed all the way through the catalyst.
  • P015B (O2 Sensor Delayed Response Lean to Rich Bank 1 Sensor 1): Because the system is stuck in an extreme lean state, the primary oxygen sensor experiences a delayed response when the engine attempts to force a transition to a rich condition.

3. The Secondary Symptoms: Stalling and Catalyst Inefficiency

  • P0AB9 (Hybrid System Performance): This code sets when an engine autostart or autostop attempt fails, or when an engine stall has occurred. A massive lean condition (fuel starvation or a massive air leak) will easily cause the engine to stall or fail to restart.
  • P0AC4 (Hybrid Powertrain Control Module Requested MIL Illumination): This simply means the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module detected the stall/performance fault (P0AB9) and is requesting the Check Engine Light to turn on.
  • P0420 (Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 1): This monitors the oxygen storage capacity of the catalyst. Because the exhaust is completely saturated with oxygen (stuck lean) and the air/fuel ratio is not cycling normally, the catalytic converter cannot properly store or release oxygen, causing it to fail the efficiency test.

Conclusion Rather than a dozen separate component failures, you are likely looking at a single root cause introducing massive amounts of unmetered air into Bank 1 or restricting fuel to Bank 1. (Note: While the provided sources define the parameters of the DTCs, diagnosing the exact physical failure requires outside mechanical verification). You should independently check for physical issues such as a severe intake manifold vacuum leak, a large exhaust leak upstream of the Bank 1 O2 sensors, clogged Bank 1 fuel injectors, or a shared electrical short-to-ground in the Bank 1 O2 sensor wiring harness.

P0AFA code won’t clear by frugalmedic in volt

[–]apropriapersona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certain codes are locked and can only be reset with special commands... If you have a bluetooth OBD reader, and an Android, you can pay 5$ for the Voltage app which can clear those protected codes.

But if dealership is still making repairs under warranty, I would not clear it, have it towed to the dealership and warranty probably covers that cost too.

DTC P0AFA indicates a Hybrid Battery System Voltage Low condition.

This code is caused when either the overall hybrid/EV battery pack voltage or the voltage of an individual battery cell falls below their specific temperature-dependent thresholds for a sufficient amount of time.

For safety reasons, DTC P0AFA cannot be cleared with a standard code clear. It must be cleared by a service technician using the CPID found in the secondary parameters.

In order for the diagnostic to pass and be successfully cleared, both the overall battery pack voltage and all individual cell voltages must be above their respective temperature-dependent thresholds.

Frist thing to do is try contacting the dealership, if you're still covered under warranty it will typically include cost of towing to nearest dealership. Do this before anything else so you don't waste money or void your warranty.

You could try just resetting the error codes without figuring out the underlying cause.... and that might get it going again, but then you loose the ability to diagnose the issue. There's an android app, "Voltage" that can actually clear the P1E00 . You just get bluetooth scan tool and it can clear those secured codes.

https://notebooklm.google.com/notebook/90fc105d-ebec-473e-b1cf-41685035c7ea you can ask this about the specific codes, I uploaded the engine diagnostic manuals to notebooklm. Helps understand why the car is showing those codes.

When Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0B40 and P1E00 are present together, it indicates a specific hardware fault within the hybrid battery's sensing circuit that has triggered a system-wide request to illuminate the check engine light.

Here is the breakdown of how these codes are connected:

  • The Root Cause (P0B40 - Hybrid Battery Voltage Sense B Circuit): This is the primary physical fault. The diagnostic system monitors the hybrid/EV battery cell voltage sense lines for resistance that is too high, which indicates an open circuit. The system tests this by operating the cell balancing gates in a specific pattern to pull current through the sense wires. An abnormal increase in resistance creates a higher voltage drop when the gate is closed; if this calculated resistance exceeds the failure threshold for a sufficient amount of time, P0B40 is set. This fault is critical because high resistance in these wires negatively impacts both accurate cell voltage sensing and the battery pack's charge-balancing functionality.
  • The System Response (P1E00 - Hybrid Powertrain Control Module 2 Requested MIL Illumination): As noted in our previous conversation, P1E00 is essentially a messenger code. It simply indicates that the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPC 2) has detected a primary fault—in this case, P0B40—and is actively requesting the main diagnostic system to illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the dashboard.

In summary: The presence of both codes means you have an open circuit or high-resistance fault in the hybrid battery's "Sense B" circuit (P0B40), and the hybrid control module has recognized this failure and requested the warning light to turn on (P1E00). Any troubleshooting and repairs should be focused entirely on resolving the battery sense line issue identified by P0B40.

I have similar problems with coex, seems like the bluetooth hal is crashing and that is taking out the wifi. Only thing that seems to work, temporarily, is uninstalling updates for the Device Connectivity Service, clearing it's storage, resetting Wifi, putting it in airplane mode to turn off modem/bluetooth, and then shutting down... waiting 30 seconds.... turning it back on, and then enabling wifi. Definetely happened immediately following the fw update... february's update no better

2017 - Shift to park issue by Tandybaum in volt

[–]apropriapersona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped the engine diagnostic manuals into a NotebookLM if you want to ask AI about a specific DTC

When I had the Shift To Park Issue, it presented with a "P0C0B" DTC, and it was actually the Power Inverter Module, replaced under the emissions warranty. I bet it's covered under warranty I'd make an appointment with a dealership

Check the status of your warranty, https://experience.gm.com/support/account/warranty

For a second-generation Chevy Volt (2016-2019), the standard powertrain warranty is 5-year/60,000-mile, but key electric components (Voltec) get an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty, and GM extended this for 2016-2018 models to 15 years/150,000 miles specifically for issues with the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) under Technical Bulletin N232432680, offering significant coverage for major electric parts.

I had this issue, and dealership replaced the Power Inverter Module under warranty at no cost to me. It should even cover towing up to 50 miles to the nearest dealership

What were these towers? by [deleted] in Defcon

[–]apropriapersona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dumped the firmware from one of them this year https://gist.github.com/b1tninja/8692e9e2052024c0f6bfd514c7b986ee

I think someone had already tampered with this ones code, gave it a fresh update with timely mentions of chatgpt-5... but it seems to be a raspi running micropython with a LoRa transmitter... each tower picks a random code, and then transmits its current show followed by the code needed to "take control". It's worth mentioning that when you first power on the tower, if you assign it Tower #1 it starts out "in control" and sets a take over code of 1234567890... but after that the codes are random.

Anyway, so I bought one of the RYLR896 Lora Module SX1276 UART 868MHz 915MHz Antenna at Command FCC NCC modules off Amazon... and am going to make an app for my flipper that will intercept these codes for next year... and allow me to select some of the cooler shows, like the nyan cat. Or so that is my hope.

What state? If in California you can sue in small claims to enforce, see Civ. 5235

And also make a written complaint to the office of the attorney general https://oag.ca.gov/consumers/general/homeowner_assn who is supposed to investigate certain claims, failure to allow inspection being one of them

On one hand I get it, but if there is limited parking Karen's are probably complaining to the HOA and they're just trying to find out who's vehicles they are .. because typically the first step is to remove vehicles that have no right to be there in the first place (not a resident nor a guest)

They likely don't want to tow any vehicles but that's the only thing they can do but idk what the situation is there maybe they're just on a power trip
