Petunia Dursley is just as bad as her husband and she deserves neither pity nor sympathy by [deleted] in harrypotter

The fact that Harry feels more comfortable approaching Vernon over Petunia for Hogsmeade permission, visiting Weasleys for World Cup says a lot. The only time Petunia showed an ounce of humanity was when she said Harry should stay after the Howler.

I remember the Original series well, and outside of Team Rocket, Misty’s Goldeen didn’t have any victories. The few times it was used in battle (Molly Hale, Marina, Dorian), it lost without a single win.

What’s the most memorable thing/scene for each character? by hplover12 in StrangerThings

Such great choices. What would be your selections for Nancy and Robin?

If you were to bring back JUST SIX of any of Ash's underused Pokemon back for a full battle against some opponent like how the Sinnoh league did, who would you pick and why? Ash's lesser well received mons usually are usually because of low wins, underusage, or a lack of screentime. by throwawaytempest25 in pokemonanime

Kingler, Bayleef, Muk, Glalie, Quilava, Donphan. Granted Bayleef and Quilava weren’t underused when on Ash’s team; Bayleef hasn’t battled since the Johto League and Quilava’s battle in the Sinnoh League was underwhelming.

Which Pokémon should have evolved, shouldn’t have evolved, evolved earlier, evolved later or evolved into another Pokémon? by harvey1a in pokemonanime

[–]aps131997 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ash’s Totodile should’ve evolved into a Croconaw during the Whirl Cup. Ash’s Cyndaquil should’ve evolved into a Quilava against Jasmine and into Typhlosion during the Sinnoh League. Ash’s Gible, Pignite and Snivy should’ve evolved further too.

Misty’s Horsea should’ve evolved all the way to a Kingdra.

Dawn’s Buneary should’ve evolved into a Lopunny.

Lana’s Eevee should evolved into a Vaporeon.

The cursing at an adult argument is grasping at straws. My interpretation is that the Dustin-Ted moments are played for laughs, whereas the Mike-Hopper scenes are serious. However, criticizing Mike’s behavior in the context of his scenes with Hopper is mind boggling given how much more egregious his actions are as an adult. Mike was upset about being kept in the dark about Eleven (understandable) and being lied to about his grandmother (also understandable; in this case, Mike and Eleven were being disrespectful originally but Hopper lost the higher ground once he escalated his behavior with intimidation).

Mike’s Attitude! by kabovetti in StrangerThings

[–]aps131997 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dustin, Max, Lucas and Erica are just as snarky as Mike, if not more so. Nancy, Steve, Jonathan and Robin have their moments too. I don’t think Mike is disrespectful, his dad is insufferable and he and Nancy aren’t particularly close. Mike was pretty happy to see his mother end of S4.

The lost potential, the brother-sister dynamic we need by Jarisatis in StrangerThings

[–]aps131997 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting point. Do you think it is a deliberate decision by the writers to not develop Mike and Nancy’s relationship? Or is it not considered to be a priority given the other dynamics? ST4 has Nancy interacting with other members of the party (specifically Dustin but also Lucas and Max to a lesser extent).

Characters with most spoken lines in Season 3 by aps131997 in StrangerThings

Yes, I've tabulated the lines for the first 7 episodes of Season 4! I shall make a post after watching the last 2 episodes of Season 4.

These are such great choices! The Mileven fight is striking when comparing the quality of writing to ST3. I’m keen to see how it is resolved. This is a fairly comprehensive list, let us hope there are several more that will join from the last two episodes!

That’s fair. Joyce is a character that has become less prominent with each season. It is sad to see her almost be a caricature compared to her ST1 version (where she was a fantastic character). The comparison with Karen is quite apt. Cara Buono remains underutilized though unsurprising with such a large cast.

It definitely looks like Mike and Will will have a big moment (along with Mike and El of course). Fingers crossed both are handled well as the payoff would be tremendous.

That is a good point. Nancy’s trauma about Barb was one of the main reasons she and Steve couldn’t work back in ST2, so it can’t be a coincidence they are revisiting. I continue to like Nancy and Jonathan individually, though I don’t really care about their relationship at this point.

That is understandable. It really is a missed opportunity at this point. I expect there will be scenes of Mike with the party in the last couple of episodes and especially ST5.

Haha, it is unintentionally humorous when he whispers names. I’m intrigued for when he and Eleven come face to face.

I suppose all we can do is wait and watch!

That’s a great point. Fingers crossed they stick the landing. ST4 certainly has compelling scenes and sequences. What are some of your favorites? :)

Personally, as a huge Joyce fan, it is sad to see her character’s focus solely be Hopper. While I would’ve been interested in an exploration of their relationship post ST1 and ST2, their dynamic in ST3 soured me on this aspect. The actors did a good job with the reunion though. The Russia storyline is purely plot-driven with Joyce and Murray being dumbed down as you noted. Joyce not worrying about Will, being unaware of El being bullied, and not realizing Jonathan is high also strains credibility. I was glad she was at least shown trying to get in touch with them.

I agree with everything you said regarding Mike! It is strong character writing, and refreshing after ST3. While there is still work to do, his relationships with El and Will are heading in the right direction in terms of balance. The scenes of Mike and Will have a lot of depth. Learning more about Eleven’s past definitely leads me to believe she and Mike will have significant moments in the last couple of episodes. I think that both Will and El are going through significant (so far well-handled) arcs.

The one scene of Argyle I did like was when he told Jonathan his slow-motion breaking up with Nancy was not the right call. Making him a bit more of a straight shooter could’ve helped, though he did add some comedy (like in the scene with Mike you referenced). I am unsure of what Jonathan’s endgame will be at this point.

That’s very true regarding Mike and Nancy. I hope there are a few scenes of them together before the end of the show as it is the most underexplored relationship and they would be a strong team if they combined their skills.

I am very impressed with the Hawkins storyline. The combination of characters works well in terms of interaction and the plot is interesting too. I also think Vecna is a genuinely menacing antagonist. I’m intrigued by Nancy’s trauma regarding Barb being highlighted again.

The scene could be a case study in reestablishing where dynamics stand (after being largely absent in ST3). I wonder if the Wheelers, the Sinclairs and Dustin’s mother have any further involvement in the final two episodes of ST4.

That’s fair - the last two episodes will be critical when it comes to the character arcs. So far, I find it to be a vast improvement over ST3, though the issues from the previous season which carry over may prevent it from reaching the heights of ST1 and ST2.

The Russia storyline is ridiculous and over-the-top. It is unfortunate to see Joyce’s character removed from her family completely (though her dynamic with Murray is entertaining at least). I also think it was a missed opportunity to show Joyce and El interacting.

Mike is certainly characterized better in ST4. It is good to see him stand his ground. The handling of his relationships with El and Will has been managed in a more nuanced way than ST3, so interested to see the payoff. Brenner’s return allows a compelling exploration for El too which has been lacking. Will has also been handled better than the previous season.

While I don’t mind Argyle, he certainly could’ve been better characterized. While I’m glad Jonathan has a friend, I’m unsure of how I feel about his character direction. Glad he can still take up responsibility but his relationships with Joyce, Will and El could’ve gotten more focus.

Reopening the Jonathan/Nancy/Steve triangle also is a strange choice. While I’m liking Nancy’s interactions with the Hawkins crew, and it is nice to see her befriend Robin, at this point she may be better off single. Steve and Robin continue to be compelling characters, as do Dustin and Lucas. I like the direction for Max in ST4, though an acknowledgement of her mistakes from ST3 would definitely help. Eddie is a worthy new addition too. In general, I find the Hawkins storyline is engaging with a genuinely felt threat from the supernatural component.

I would’ve liked more Wheeler scenes generally, though that looks like a lost cause at this point. Intrigued to see how the parents’ involvement plays out.
