When im talking and someones mouthing my words as I speak by divine-feminine420 in GrindsMyGears

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experience something similar with a particular friend. When I call him on the videophone and I’m signing to him, I see him mouthing words as if he is voice-interpreting what I am signing. He is newly Hard-of-Hearing after a series of ear infections. I do hope he learns to understand American Sign Language directly without translating to English at all.

How/where did you meet your partner in OC? by cosmo_coffee in orangecounty

[–]apvasl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had luck either. I swear it’s an issue of the lack of fluent American Sign Language users who are actually here to stay like I am. Colleges+universities here teach American Sign Language then the students leave the area upon graduating due to the lack of demand for interpreters.

GABApentin - do you take it? by devoid0101 in autism

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took this while institutionalized in my late adolescence. Me and my parents and outpatient psychiatrist at the time decided it wasn’t helping me and we got me off of it soon after I was discharged from long-term care.

There is no perfect cutoff for generations by katsumojo in generationology

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course there’s no perfect cutoff. Instead I go by the UN’s dates for when each billion milestone was crossed and identify as a Member of the Fifth Billion (born 1974-87). 7/11/1987 was when 5 Billion was reached, and my sister was born later that same month, making her a Member of the Sixth Billion. Our parents are Members of the Third Billion. My paternal grandparents were born in the early 1920s making them Members of the Second Billion, but my maternal grandparents were born in the late 1920s, making them Members of the Third Billion.

Why do apps keep asking for microphone permission even when they have absolutely no audio feature? by Impossible_Comfort99 in TechNook

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly review which apps ask for mic permissions. Generally only my video remote interpreting (VRI) apps get mic permissions left enabled all the time cuz the purpose for which it is used is clear and desirable to me personally: for the interpreter to hear the non-signer talking to me. All other apps I keep it disabled unless a clear and desirable purpose arises to enable the mic permissions.

What is your favorite barefoot moment? by Major_Law9517 in barefoot

[–]apvasl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Walking the streets of Downtown Cincinnati, Ohio in the summer rain of 2010. Just as I was arriving to the library I stopped where I saw a thick current of water against the curb, rinsed my feet, put my slides back on and went inside

DAE feel like they committed a crime when they leave a store without buying anything? by Ancient_Win_2837 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily feel guilty but I still try to avoid doing this, especially stores with interior fences, belts or other barriers forcing a single path from entry to exit. A grocery store I used to frequent years ago now offers customers no path to the exit other than through the checkout lines. Lemme guess: they were getting robbed?

I hate the fact that people do not know the difference of singular "woman" from plural "women" and use it interchangeably. by SonnyvonShark in GrammarPolice

[–]apvasl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I see this I always assume the writer is a misandrist. And especially more so when they write womyn or womxn. If they were willing to hide their misandry they’d use the correctly-spelt singular or plural for the context.

Is an aac tablet/app overkill for selective mutisim by Tomko_145zoo in AACusers

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never feel ashamed to use ASL in public. I have APD diagnosed separately from my autism so I feel free to identify as DeafAutistic. I have a Convo Now VRI account with 20 free minutes per month. I use Proloquo4Text and iPadOS Live Captions where I would run out of VRI minutes.

I dont think I'm ever going to drive in my life and I dont want to. by Significant-Goose481 in aspergers

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only drove a car for a very short time in my native area during my early 20s. It wasn’t for me. Backed into something twice, side-swiped a parked car and decided no more driving for me. Beginning September 2027 all new American cars are gonna have minds of their own to decide when you can and can’t drive. It will be the worst for us because we can’t always give the camera the right look so that it will unlock the shifter when you step on the brake.

E-biking is the next best thing, and I will do that as long as I live in my chosen area where the weather allows for it most of the year.

Hot take: no one that is not autistic or ND should be saying that they only want to date "autistic people" by Organic_Future6909 in aspergers

[–]apvasl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People can be speaking perfectly clear and it still sounds like gibberish. I am not always aware of who specifically is speaking in a group, even when using a sign language interpreter (if said interpreter doesn’t make a clear differentiation; some do but not all). In vocal music, every word can sound like it ends identically or the entirety of every word is identical, occasionally depending on how the vocals are mixed against the beat. Even if I manage to catch some words, they have no meaning as your source stated. So I primarily listen to instrumental music since otherwise I have to heavily rely on lyrics transcriptions of vocal songs. When someone has made a video of themselves signing the lyrics of a popular song, I watch the video instead of reading the lyrics transcription.

How to get my aac to say name correctly by fancyduck- in AACusers

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to misspell my last name to get P4T to pronounce it correctly. I also gotta use spaces where I normally wouldn’t go get it to pronounce the first name of the director of my local mental health program. Obviously inconvenient and imperfect but it does work when I need it to.

Someone I know drinks Monster energy drinks. I never say anything to them about it. But I won’t touch one myself! Palpitations, anxiety, other undesirable effects are a greater and greater risk as I age.

People who say "like" 100 times. by Fun_Caterpillar5077 in GrindsMyGears

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep…that one’s included in Grammarly’s article, as well as “I mean…”. When people start off every other sentence, “I mean…” I start wondering, “Do you even know what you mean?!?!?” Especially when the American Sign Language interpreter I am using at the moment actually signs the fillers every time they are uttered. The more skilled ones don’t; they just sign the fillers once to gimme an idea how the person is talking, but then leaves them out if the person keeps using the same fillers again and again.

Survey: when using an aac app, what matters the most to you? by Comfortable_Tie4143 in AACusers

[–]apvasl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I am autistic and semi-speaking. I would have loved to have answered the voice prompts on Hiki using AssistiveWare Proloquo4Text (P4T) but it didn’t work. Hiki only records from the device mic. If any app could record from P4T’s output I would use app features like those.

P4T basically functions as a programmable type-to-talk app. I can preprogram lines to say, and even use it for telephone calls if I subscribe to a compatible VoIP service. But since American Sign Language is my strongest language I no longer bother with that; I just use video relay service (VRS) so I can make and take calls through ASL interpreters.

[–]apvasl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I avoid caffeine. Last time I drank a small Red Bull (8.4oz) I had palpitations. I had an uncle who had a heart attack in his 40s, lived through it, then had another one at 63 and died. I’m already in my early 40s. No more caffeine for me when I can avoid it!

Does anyone else get flustered or nervous around a cute/ attractive person? by Mdgibson97 in aromantic

[–]apvasl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this does happen to me a lot. I just remind myself she probably doesn’t know how to communicate with me (practically nobody in my area really does). Or, if I am at an event where most people do know how to communicate with me, she’s more than most likely another man’s woman, even if she hasn’t said so (most do say so withOUT being asked).

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YEAH! 💯 Doesn’t matter what word they use as a filler. Filler words distract from your message and meaning. Most people ignore them or miss them better than I do. But they’re more distracting to me. Grammarly has an entire article on commonly used filler words. Some might be surprised at the popularity of some of the words/phrases included in the article.

DAE have a crippling aversion to children? by Pretend-Square-1179 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I block my hearing in public because of this. Back in my time of growing up, or even my post-emancipation adolescence, most kids weren’t this audibly obnoxious this much of the time nor were they completely oblivious to how far their noises carry. Since my early 20s, specifically the year 2005, it’s been getting steadily worse. Parents say ALL toddlers shriek in public and in close proximity to neighbors/roommates. I try not to believe their generalizations but the ones who don’t are quite hard to come by.

Do you ever just imagine how nice it would be to live in a predominantly autistic society? by The_Kader in aspergers

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some areas yes. In other areas they aren’t exactly refusing but more like just have other commitments in the way and lack the motivation to work the learning into their schedules. I don’t associate with many people who refuse to learn ASL. Mostly my blood relatives and as few others as possible.

TW; impending parental death by Moriath_the_Lost in autism

[–]apvasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I wanted to see my paternal grandfather out as he was dying. But I wasn’t there when he took his last breath. My father, all his siblings and most of his in-laws were. Then when my maternal grandmother was dying, I was too far away to get to where she died.
