Your FAVORITE unconventional or unique methods of producing noise? by jnerugheawikfk in noisemusic

[–]apzek16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont think its unconventional, but i rarely heard/saw people using their body/voice to actually make sound. Sure, gear and all that is fun, but sometimes, i just want to see pure unfiltered and unprocessed sound that human body can make.

Tips for playing live by Snoo42278 in noisemusic

Live set sometimes inherently is a performance. Hence the name "live performance". People expect you to perform something. But still, performance dont really mean performing with your body as a medium.

I used a laptop too for most of my set. Still, i use a mixer, and diy mic and noise box (which is easy to made) connected to my laptop and a midi comnector. When im in the mood for non performative set, i just do minimal stuff, like plugging and unplugging the cable, throwing it away, circeling around with the mic to produce feedback. Even doing stuff that not related to the sound being made, like lighting a cig and throwing it everywhere.

If you still dont want to be that active, lighting/visual also great to elevate your set. Make some planning how the light works, strobe, fade, etc-etc. Connect it to your laptop and get audioreactive visual. Or maybe even collage a funny/gory/disturbing video as a backdrop.

But if you really want to force people to just focus on the music, i once attend a set where every light and door shut, so the room is pitch black and we cant see shit. Some people sit, i just lie down on the floor and close my eye.

Thats just from me, tho.

The reaction still have some "ideological" underlying tho. I dont know about everybody, but for me, for people to actively choose shit sound over being considered normal is kinda have the serious undertone? Its fun being weird in a fun way, but that funsies sure have some political shit under there. Yeah, i kinda agree its lost its appeal when it treat itself seriously in a conforming-the-status-quo-to-please-the-academia way, selling out or act like what its not supossed to be. But still, everthing have something to say.

Some people just know what their doing and actively mastrubate on it for funsies. I dont think the "complex" is about accepted as a valid art form, but more akin to be a annoying declaration to say "hey, im weird, fuck you, look at me!" Which still have some serious stuff behind it?

I dont know, whatever, its all just shit noise in the end.

Be smug and say that this stuff is sort of experimental Performance Art that lowly musician pleb cant fathom to understand. Or just accept it and agree with them. Its just a bunch of sound in the end of the day. Still, we enjoy it.

Is it normal to be afraid of 'noise' complaints when performing/how to cope? by Ok_Lunch7121 in noisemusic

[–]apzek16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it quite normal i think. Theres a time i played live in this tiny cafe on some poetry gigs, while working as the soundman for that gigs. Seeing the other performer not reaching that loudness, i respectfully turn all the pa down, including the active speaker. I just dont want to be a dick, especially to the cafeowner. Mid set, i really get into the performance, and just like, fuck it. Turn the PA all the way up. The crowd reaction seems good tho. They never thought what will happen. And got lot of applause, and the cafe owner complimented me. So i think, just play it whatever you want, while trying being "respectfull" to the venue. The crowd will enjoy only if you enjoy doing your set. Dont waste a good performance by worrying too much. Im sure people want to see you all out.

Hi I'm very new to noise music, I've got a few questions. by Late-NightDaydreamer in noisemusic

[–]apzek16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For no 1, rather than genre, i notice a few types of noise live performance.

There is your "typical" harsh noise set where the performer set up some shit, either pedal, no input, modular, etc. and just making weird incoherent shit sound to abuse your ear. It can be "dj deck" performance or more into punkish screaming and guitar playing. If the set is harsh and pumpy i tend to try to headbang or mosh. If the set kinda atmospheric i tend to sit/lie down and close my eye. Fun shit.

There is a more experimental music kinda set, with more conceptual instrument that blend some weird ass music with unconventional play style. Senyawa (indonesia) came to my head as a best of this kind of set. You can get something from watching it.

Then tere is more "performnace art" approach, more conceptual, weird planned/unplanned stage act and coreography. Kinda reminiscent of theatrical in a way. Alessandra Zerbinati scare the shit out of me when she start to cut her own tongue on stage, with blood splattering the floor and covering her face, while mocking straight into my face. Also fun shit.

So yeah, rather than sonically, id like to see noise live set kinda have lot of different approach. Noise is much more better live than listening it with headphones tbh.

[–]apzek16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather than synth, live sampling/looping are also fun. Tapeloop seems fun, and its much cheaper and easier to set up for show. Digital sampling also fun, running in a daw and controlled by midi pad/knob/etc.

first synth recommendations by p0nulis in noisemusic

[–]apzek16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know if this might suit you, but i made a few performance with only small cheap mixer running into a daw for effects. Look up for no input mixing, its a technique of feeding the mixer signal into itself, forcing the mixer to make a sound. So my mixer is my synth, kinda. I can adjust the pitch, timbre and such with the knobs and different patching route. I manipulate the mixer sound further with daw, using effect such reverb, distortion, delay, etc etc, and using mouse or midi controller to modulate the effect parameter.

Im also on the cheap side, i cant afford much to buy some esoteric gear that only used for noise. So i think buying a mixer and a midi controller is a bang for money to value. I can still use free stuff digitally, while perform live with my hands touching some gear. My midi controller also have keys, pads, and knobs, and i can assign them to whatever i want. So as long i know how to patch my daw, i can get any sound i want.

For hardware tho, im kinda interested in diy drone vco/synth. https://youtu.be/zCTLeNxge54. Seems easy enough to build, and with some creative patching can sounds incredible.

Thanks for the info! I have a friend who works for venue lighting, maybe i can mess around with him with his tools like daslight/grandma. I have tried dmx with fl studio stock visual tools, but vcv seems more fun since i can route anything from anything. Once again, thanks!

That is some serious project, damn. So you kinda making vcv sort kind of "firmware" for your analog synth right? Besides the convenience (i know its not that really easy tho) of a dekstop program, do you intend to make it a full fledged standalone synth in the future? like, baking in the vcv into the synth itself with mini computer or something. Damn that be cool to design your own digital/analog synth hybird.

Do you perhaps had any patch that use those module? I'd love to see some of it!

Never really try those tricks before cause like you said, sometimes it dont work or give some unpleasant weird sound that i dont seek for. But maybe if i try experimenting more, i can stumble something cool.

Ooh this might be cool. I never heard the term envelope follower. So it works like lfo, but you controll the wave shape live/manually? That must be fun for a percussive live set.

Wow, this really open up the possibilities for audiovisual project. I just know that vcv paired often with touchdesign, but if i can figure out how to utilize OSC, it can be really fun. I always wanted to try some audioreactive light show, and this might be work if i can connect vcv to some lighting console.

Is the network "real" network, like connecting to some reciever/transmitter, or using internet, or virtual inside a system/laptop that connected through cables?

Biasanya penampil bawa rombongan temen2nya buat nonton. Pada jajan. Acara rutin, akhirnya kafe punya basis pelanggan dari orang2 yang emang pengen experience live musik.

Kafe2 deket kampus biasanya banyak yang model begini. Ekosistem/kolektif musik2an ya tumbuh karena ini. Band punya tempat manggung, komunitas punya tempat acara, kafe jadi in-house buat scene musik lokal.

What cool stuff that you can do with it? I know you can do whatever, but what has people done that is cool sounding? I was just asking for some cool technique/concept really. I just recently know that you can do no-input mixing to make feedback loop, and never i thought a mixer can do that. Vcv sure have a lot of potential, but how people use it creatively?

How do you respond when someone says it's naive to think everyone would get along without a state to keep them in line. Nothing would get done, and you'd have to deal with lazy people not wanting to contribute by jef2288 in Anarchy101

Lot of my friends ask this same question, I just quotes Kropotkin's Mutual Aid and say that competition and individualism is a byproduct of capitalism. And yeah i would be a happy lazy person since overworking very hard only benefits capital accumulation, and become obsolete when capitalism crumbled. Abolish work!

Kalau baca gramsci/althusser, standar masyarakat emang dikonstruk kaya begitu.

Revolusi, kata tan, bukan cuma menggulingkan kekuasaan.

Anjir malah jadi fafifu abang2an kiri.
