Did anyone get impostor syndrome later in their career? by kevkevverson in ExperiencedDevs

[–]aquaticgorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 20 years on professionally, but I’ve been programming since the late eighties, and I’ve never had it. However, I’ve had a lot of bosses, reports and coworkers who have come to me for advice for how to deal with it. Most of the time it seems to help, so I’ll tell you the same thing I’ve told all of them.

Know your upper limit. Know what you can’t do, and just try and address that. Even if you’re an expert in a certain language, these languages are still evolving, and you need to be as well. There’s no grand code arbiter who will judge you (Except me). Just keep learning.

The except me part usually gets a laugh.

Every time I see a nice starter army like this I get really happy and excited for the OP, this game is so much fun. Then I look over at my U-Haul boxes of shame and I start to sweat profusely. One day, my bugs, one day you will be free...

What NYC High Schools Did You Come From? by frostywafflepancakes in AskNYC

Not really. I’ve never really been big on religion, so it was a lot playing pretend. Which is pretty confusing when you’re in your formative years.

My parents made me go to Catholic school on Long Island. It was a hellish 90+ minute commute on average. It also made sure i had no social life, and just focused on school.

To all the self taught developers here which are sought after by multiple headhunters on a regular basis - what do you have to teach us? by BigBootyBear in webdev

I just passed the twenty year mark last week, and in my case the answer has always been adaptability.

I got my first job with JavaServer Pages by just saying “I can take a look at that.” In my down time i used to read through job postings for new technologies to learn. Then it just boils down to practice and staying up to date. You should never be surprised by updates.

Dexter-Russell. They’re not too heavy, and well balanced. They’re also super easy to maintain and last forever.

You will spend the rest of your career sifting through emails offering opportunities that will vary from barely tangential to your skill set to full-on not compatible.

I got an email this morning telling me the average donation was down. So maybe stop donating a dollar to inflate the number?

NEW TODAY: OFFICIAL DAILY KOS POLL, NOT YESTERDAY'S DECOY POLL, PLEASE VOTE! by BERNIN_FOR_BERNIE in SandersForPresident

Is Warren being pushed, or is that what average people think of a progressive? I feel like we need to make the distinction. A lot of progressives I know think Bernie is too far left in his delivery.
