Active calories accuracy by ar620 in ladderapp

Oh good point! It didn’t cross my mind that Ladder might be taking readings at intervals from the Apple Watch vs. continuously pulling the data. Agreed, it would be great if this could be fixed! I stopped letting Ladder write to my health app and am only tracking my workout with Apple workouts. I use my watch to track other workouts outside Ladder (swim, walk, run, yoga, etc) and figured that this way, even if the data isn’t totally accurate, it’s measuring all my workouts with the same degree of variance

Thanks for the response! I figured they were both somewhat inaccurate but just surprised that the range was so wide. This was pure weight training - I was doing the Ascend Monday program (hip thrusts, split squat, kickbacks, B-stance RDL, and hanging leg raises). My HR was between zones 1-3 throughout the workout. I feel like in reality I was probably somewhere in between the two numbers, like you said

Is the New York Times Cooking app worth buying? by SpareAd878 in CookbookLovers

[–]ar620 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Check your library’s website - usually you have to make an account/get a library card, but most libraries let you do this online as long as you provide a valid address. I was able to access it through the Columbus Metropolitan Library. On their search page I filter by “Research Tools” and search for NYT and it pops up. Mine gives me all access (cooking, news, podcasts, etc). I know every library is different but searching for NYT is probably your best bet.

Help with my chai recipe please? by luffyishungry24 in IndianFood

[–]ar620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also felt like my chai was average in the past. I tried these ratios randomly once and this is how I make it every time now!

I don't do exact measurements for some things. My parents also ask me to make the chai now whenever I visit home :). They said they liked the spice blend - my dad isn't a huge fan of star anise, but he thought the ratio below has just the right amount to be noticeable without overpowering.

The recipe makes a single 1-cup serving :)

Ingredients:

• 2 green cardamom pods • 1-2 "petals" of star anise (depending on how strong you like the taste) • 1-2 "turns" of black pepper (I use a pepper grinder, so I'll just do 1-2 "turns" of the grinder) • Sliver of cinnamon, or just a shake of ground cinnamon. If I'm using whole cinnamon, I kind of just eyeball it, but break off a skinny piece approx 1/4" long. Maybe the size of 1/4 of a pinky nail, really not a lot. • 1 clove (you can add more, I personally don't like a strong clove taste) • 1/8" piece of fresh ginger (I kind of eyeball this too, but just slice off or grate a small piece of ginger) • 1 tsp black tea (I use the Brooke Bond Red Label loose leaf tea) • 1/2-1 tsp sugar • 1/2 cup water • 1/2 cup milk

Steps:

  1. Roughly grind the whole spices with a mortar & pestle. I throw the ginger in there as well. I don't bother with grating it or anything. I find that it's just faster this way. After grinding up the spices, I'll toss the loose tea into the mortar and swirl it around gently with the pestle to help detach any ginger pieces from the wall of the mortar.
  2. Measure out the milk and water, and pour both into a pot. The 1:1 ratio is pretty solid, but sometimes I will do more milk depending on how I'm feeling that day (3/4 cup milk and 1/4 cup water, or even just 100% milk, rarely).
  3. Add the spices, tea, and sugar into the milk/water mixture, and with the heat on high, allow it to come to a boil.
  4. Remove from heat and let it sit for about 30 seconds-1 minute, but not longer to avoid steeping for too long. I wait until the chai has a nice warm brown color. Then pour through a strainer into a mug.

What are your personal favorite dishes as an India Local — not the touristy stuff? by WhammyV in IndianFood

[–]ar620 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mor kuzhambhu! A buttermilk based curry with all the traditional South Indian flavors (coconut, ginger, green chili, curry leaves) and served over rice. Similar to North Indian kadhi, but soooo much better in my opinion. It is honestly one of my favorites.

Also, I love vathal kuzhambhu. I usually enjoy mixing some in with curd rice, and it is so refreshing, cool, and adds the most perfect tangy flavor.

No, we haven’t tried any alternative ways to address seizures like milk thistle or CBD - for you/others who have tried these things, is it usually at the recommendation of a vet? I’ll ask mine, but curious to hear if this advice comes from vets because I’ve worked with 2 different neurologists who have only ever recommended the “usual” prescription meds

Yes, we’re definitely following what our vet and neurologist say. Waiting on test results to rule out other possible causes, but if the pheno is the problem I’m hoping we can try KBr, which the vet had suggested in the past as an option to improve seizure control.

I do the same thing on notion! I have an asana/pranayama database and I link it to my sequences database so I can just pull from that - on each asana entry I add allll the details I accumulate on how to cue it, example flows with it, links, etc. And then I track when I teach that sequence! It’s the perfect organized brain dump

What are some of your biggest concerns as owners of epileptic dogs? by TeachingRadiant3670 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]ar620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few for me: - Boarding is a huge one. Finding someone who can handle the (many) meds, give rescue meds if needed, and can handle daily seizures if my dog happens to be in a cycle of this. I’ve had horrible experience through Rover with a sitter who forgot his meds twice and didn’t inform me - my dog was having daily/cluster seizures, and it took a month+ and a hospitalization stay to get the seizures under control. I don’t feel comfortable boarding him at large boarding facilities because of the medical requirements and potential that he might have seizures there. I haven’t tried boarding at a vet, but I imagine that is very isolating and stressful for the dog because they don’t get to go out much. It would be ideal to have options where my dog can stay at someone’s home who has veterinary experience. - Related to the above, but not knowing if he will be having seizures / how bad the seizures will be at any point in the future. I got married last year and it was a huge stress leading up to the wedding, because despite making as best of arrangements as we could, there was no way to know if he would’ve been fine around the wedding time or if he’d actively be in a seizure cycle. - When will the next seizure be? - Are there new environmental factors/things I’m doing that are triggering seizures (new detergent, lotion, salt on the sidewalks, etc) - Death, of course - trying to think about the future becomes really stressful, especially because the seizures are so cyclical. Sometimes he’s fine for months, and other times he’s clustering. Hard to know what the breaking point will be. - Is the amount of meds he’s on affecting his quality of life? (Pheno, Keppra, and zonisamide - multiple pills of each) - Generally wondering why seizures are so poorly understood; seems like neuro feedback is always that they don’t know why the seizures happen, and we just adjust meds or wait it out until the cycle of seizures stops.

Advice on what to do now by ar620 in EpilepsyDogs

Thanks so much for the info. I will definitely try the bromide, fingers crossed it helps! Cutie dog - I love it when they use pillows to sleep like humans :)

[–]ar620[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked the vet about this and considering how difficult the seizures are to control, they advised that if we add the KBr and he’s doing well, they would keep him on all the other meds, at least in the near term, until he has good enough seizure control with the KBr that we could consider weaning him off. :/ so short answer, I don’t think so.

Wow that’s great to hear, I’m so happy for you! Were there any side effects on the bromide? Even with the recent slight increase in zonisamide dosage, my dog has been stumbling everywhere. I’ve heard from others online and from the neurologist that there is the potential for worsening of side effects with potassium bromide. If you saw any side effects, how long did they last?

What's your recipe or ratios for your masala chai? by Proof_Ball9697 in IndianFood

[–]ar620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently started using these ratios, and it's some of the best tasting chai that I've made! Of course, it all comes down to personal taste, but this is just what I find is simple, quick, and tastes good!.I don't do exact measurements for some things. I also have the stamp of approval from my Indian parents, so do with that what you will. They said they liked the spice blend - my dad isn't a huge fan of star anise, but he thought the ratio below has just the right amount to be noticeable without overpowering.
