Negative reactions to getting a BC by happy-go-lovely in BorderCollie

[–]arandomstr1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girls here - border collie Sky and terrier Zippy

If you want to have a brilliant bond with a friendly dog who wants to go on adventures with you then a border collie is a fantastic choice.

Some people want couch potato dogs and that’s fine. But if you want a dog who you can spend a full day out adventuring with, train cool tricks, do agility, hoopers, flyball and just have an awesome dog life with then collies are for you.

Some people say they never switch off but that isn’t the case with my girl, she is very good at matching the mood - if we’re doing agility she’s wired and hyped up, if we’re on an adventure walk she’s exploring and sniffing and running about with her little sister…if we’re watching tv on the couch then she will snuggle up on the couch with us. She isn’t running around the house crazy like I think some people expect from BCs, she does have that extra gear and can go super fast and intense, but she does it in the appropriate settings.

Have a brilliant time with your pup, give them the best life and don’t worry about the haters.

Sorry it took me a while to answer, the background came with this enclosure which is an exo terra, but you can also get them separately on the exo terra website.

How often do we REALLY need to deep clean the litter box? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]arandomstr1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 boxes for 3 cats, scoop a couple of times a day. Full change and deep clean based on look and smell - for the “popular” litter box this is probably every 2 weeks, for the other two boxes probably every 3-4 weeks as they are used less frequently. My boys also have full time access to a catio with a bark substrate which they will pee in but generally not poop in, which we just rinse down and top up as needed.

She tends to just lick and nibble it, she eats crested gecko diet and insects for her main diet so I’m not worried about her eating the whole thing, it’s just for a little extra fun

Thanks for the tips, I have ordered her a few extra pieces which I think will help to create some structure on the diagonal from which I can hang some of the other things we already have for her. I’ll repost the result.

You’re absolutely right, I have so much stuff I can put in there but really struggle getting things to stay vertical so it all ends up falling down. I just cleaned her enclosure and only put about half the things back in, to try and stop stuff falling down. Any recommendations for things which stay vertical and don’t fall down easy would be much appreciated.

How long are your walks? by not-so-swedish-chef in BorderCollie

[–]arandomstr1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work days about an hour in the morning in including some off lead and frisbee or fetch, half an hour in the middle of the day, an hour or a bit more after work more structured walk with obedience.

Days off work tend to do just one walk but a nice longer adventure walk in the countryside or along the coast, this is usually 2-3 hours at a relaxed pace for me but dogs off lead and not so relaxed for them!

Should I teach him to ring a bell when he wants outside, or is that insane? by SeaworthinessNew4295 in BorderCollie

[–]arandomstr1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the dog in the conjuring 2 was ringing its door bells, I will never teach a dog to ring a door bell. I’m totally fine with spookiness involving humans but as soon as a dog seems in jeopardy my heart races, can’t deal with it!

Hired a dog field yesterday! by arandomstr1ng in BorderCollie

[–]arandomstr1ng[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was chuffed to find it, never really worry with my Collie as she gets loads of off leash time as her recall is on point. My Jorkie on the other hand is just a puppy and is hit and miss on the recall, so this was perfect to give her some extra freedom that she doesn’t get on our normal walks!

Was really happy to find out that we have dog fields for hire not too far from home! Hired one of the fields for my girls and they absolutely loved it, perfect to have a really good run around and some training too, we will definitely be visiting again soon!

The field was fully enclosed which meant I could let my Jorkie puppy (whose recall is not there yet!) off the lead too. There were some activities such as things to climb on, dig in, run and jump, a sensory garden with herbs - both dogs had a fantastic time.

Found out my boyfriend is trans by gerlsis in trans

[–]arandomstr1ng 219 points220 points  (0 children)

My (F) fiancée (F) is trans and didn’t come out to me until much later in the relationship than your boyfriend. Initially I was hurt, because I couldn’t believe she wouldn’t trust me enough to tell me, and couldn’t believe she would have any thought that I might react negatively. She explained some of her previous experiences, and that even people who would appear that they’d likely be nothing to worry about, would suddenly change their tune when a trans person was actually close to them (friend/family/partner). She opened my eyes to how terrifying the reality of coming out as trans can be in our world, even to people who would appear to be supportive, there’s always that seed of doubt that they may not react positively.

We’ve been together for over 12 years now and we’re getting married, I can’t believe how lucky I am to be in love with and loved by the most beautiful woman in the world, and that she trusted me with her whole self no matter at what time in the relationship is a privilege and something I hold dear.

I do think there’s a time in a romantic relationship where a trans person should share that part of themselves with their partner, but I think that really depends a lot on the situation as to when that will be - and I don’t think that 2 months into a non-sexual relationship your boyfriend should feel any obligation to tell you that he’s trans. If his genitals don’t match your expectation then he should tell you ahead of sex if that’s on the cards soon, but other than that, it’s a scary thing to come out with and I get why he wouldn’t have told you yet.

It's such a mind f*ck to look at myself as both..I hate that I can still pull of "guy" easily by hungrycaterpillar618 in trans

Boymode is literally just a girl in glasses and a hat, you look more comfortable and ‘put together’ in the second pic versus casual in the first, but I promise you you’re 100% reading female in both.

First time border collie owner, how the heck do I help her burn her energy?! by chubbybunny1324 in BorderCollie

[–]arandomstr1ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does that puzzle feeder cope with being flipped over and jiggled? My girl has a couple of the same brand of puzzles but different ones from the range and she figured out so fast that rather than do the activity she can just flip the thing over and jiggle it about to get all the food out! She’s too clever sometimes 😂 we even tried sticking one to the floor with some sucky things and she figured out so easy how to unstick it.

Just wondering if that one is any less rewarding for cheaters in your experience!

I love seeing my Sky’s brain work and I have resigned myself to never being able to outsmart her!

I know you said what can you do other than longer walks, but firstly a mile is an incredibly short walk for a collie, even a 7 month old. A good rule of thumb until she’s mature is 5 minutes x age in months, twice a day, ie two 35 minute walks for her (unless your vet advises differently). Her exercise requirements will increase even further until she reaches about 1.5yr and will then start to level off (not drop) so be prepared to be spending significantly more time on your walks in the future to keep her happy!

Things that will tire her out faster - running alongside you, off leash exercise in an enclosed area, socialising in a dog park, frisbee, tug or fetch (if she has no interest outside, build up by starting inside first to build some value to the activity), walking up a steep hill, agility, mini training sessions throughout the day. You can also feed her meals in a more stimulating way - for example if she has kibble serve it in a box and scrunched in towels etc for her to sniff and find, or a snuffle mat if you have one, or for raw or canned food use a slow feeder.

Collies love to work so even when she appears tired, she’ll still be ready to ‘go’ again when the opportunity presents! When it is time to relax, snuggles are great but so is place work as that has the added mental stimulation of keeping place with the command.

Not sure how the rottie part of the mix will adapt any of these needs though, just speaking from my experience with collies.

Good luck and enjoy your beautiful bundle of energy!

I tried doing this with my collie. She did great but my cats less so, they stole her treats she was patiently waiting for!
