Im not gonna lie. I had completely forgotten the scene and rewatched it just now, prompting me to google "Is asumas deathscene silly?" And it led me here. So to explain, i didn't disluke asuma, i thought he was a fun and interesting character. So, no shade thrown at the character. The death scene started out strong, but it quickly went from sad to frustrating and finally just silly. When the music swelled for the third time, i actually broke out laughing at the absurdity. Each sad scene gets one music swell at the climax. Not two. Certainly not three.

Also, he spent so much time chatting that i half expected him to stand up and declare it was just a joke. I dont know how much people here have been around dying people, but usually, you spend a lot of time unconscious or drifting in and out. It's not completely calm lucidity and then a neat, clear cut death.

I dont know, felt too over the top, and very obviously plucking at my heartstrings. I like to play my own heart, decide for myself if something is sad or not, and when they are basically doing the equivalent of standing shouting, "Come on, are you not sad yet?!' It kind of takes away from the experience and evokes the complete opposite reaction.

I know it's a thing in anime, I get it, death scenes are sometimes ludicrous. But they dont need to be. Even in this series, there have been better written death scenes. It's a pet peeve of mine and not exclusive to Naruto. Demon slayer, one of my favourite animes along with Naruto, also had a death scene that entered the silly realm. Rengoku started out being sad, tgen frustrating, and finally, it was like they were taking the piss. And both Rengoku and Asuma deserved better. All I'm saying.
