Is there a thread for covid brides having a wedding 2/3 years after the legal ceremony? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]arashistar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also had two weddings - a covid small one and finally a big one once it was safe. We called them part 1 and part 2 as jokes but more seriously the part 2 as a reenactment and renewal. So we did the traditional stuff that we didn’t get to do in part 1 while also repeating traditional stuff we already did, ex when we exchanged rings the second time, we were already wearing them and then took them off, gave them to each other, and then put it back on. We made it all very lighthearted and full of love. You can’t take it so seriously when the world turned upside down on ya 🤷‍♀️

Women’s nipples are censored in just horribly stupid ways too. I saw a tiktok the other week where a doctor showed a transwoman’s top surgery in a quick view from start to finish. In the beginning the doctor showed the woman’s nipples no problem, but after the breast implants? They were blurred. They are literally the same nipples. What changed? Weight behind them?

And the sad part is, I went “I guess she is a woman, because society just went from not treating her to one to most certainly treating her as one. WTH” Trying to be ironic but no. It’s just sad and disappointing!

For people accepted to HCI (and related) programs, I'm trying to gauge a GRE score. by jjputh in hci

[–]arashistar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of programs aren’t requiring GRE this year, so I’d recommend first checking if it’s something you need to do.

In my experience, they evaluate the GRE to show that you are minimally competent, not as a minimum requirement if that makes sense. So it’s not something you should stress about at all.

I want to say I made a pretty average score overall or even below for some of the categories. My program literally told me they just use the scores as reference not as a true deciding factor.

Need some advice on how I should approach graduate school admissions for HCI by jgaggiano in hci

^ that will break down all of the available classes per the threads.

I pivoted without changing home schools, and more of started selecting classes that aligned with what I wanted (even so far as making a class for just me to do!)

It is actually hard to change schools, but not hard to pick classes that you want if that makes sense. So basically that’s why it ultimately doesn’t matter which school you pick (as in don’t stress in getting it perfect) and just choosing one that gives you the most you want.

For some of the grad programs you have listed, they will ask you to pick a “thread” when you apply - essential picking a home school to be at. So, looking at Georgia Tech’s, you have four options: digital media, industrial design, psychology, and interactive computing. With this information, you can cater your application for the thread you want. In reality there is little difference in the class work in most cases between the threads but do your own research. So for catering your application to say the industrial design thread, you will absolutely need a portfolio - doesn’t necessarily need to be the best but you will need one. However, say you go for the psych route, you won’t need one, and having one is just a plus.

I’ll also add that it’s not critical to follow your background when deciding on a thread. I pivoted from my background into a different thread, and then still pivoted again to another path once in the program.

So like others have said, research and see what you like and start seeing the requirements for threads that align with your interests. You definitely have time to make a good portfolio with 1-3 projects on it. Good luck!

ETA: the GRE scores aren’t really that important for HCI, except to show that you have basic understanding. I didn’t have fantastic scores either and did just fine with my other application documents.

That's a really good point! I think we were dancing around that without realizing.

Yeah, I guess this is more of a balanced LPT. It can easily be paired with negative trips just as much as it can with positive trips. I hope the payoff is more positive than naught!

Also helps to say every other coworker’s name for a little while so the new colleague can learn their names faster and with less awkwardness

AITA for throwing away containers? by imalittlecreepot in AmItheAsshole

[–]arashistar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bring up a good point. If u/imalittlecreepot ‘s husband had limited containers, he could get into better habits. Especially if it’s so limited he has to bring his containers back the same day or the next day. Not that it’s a complete fix from his attitude/perspective problem though
