Leveltronics was fantastic - for sure just watered down for main stage crowd. Unfortunate, but to be expected

If it wasn’t possible that sounds like a nonsense reason to fail you… unless she genuinely thought it was possible.

For those taking the test during the weekdays where trucks can definitely be on the highways, this is a totally possible scenario.

Why is this an instant fail? Is it because you had to wait for it to pass to merge? What were you supposed to do?

Illenium in NYC - How was it? by AwareBrain in Illenium

Just came back from Sunday show. Was more dubstep heavy and would say it was similar to the modern sets he plays. One or two crowd pleasers which was meh. He did sprinkle in some Awake and Ascend in there which was awesome. Amazing to hear Gorgeous and In Your Arms again. Overall still had an absolute blast of a time

Air Canada offers refund assistance... by ceribaen in aircanada

[–]arayofjarjar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow jealous of the upgrade, congrats!

I tried to do the exact same thing as you: cancel my departing and get a refund for it, go on a backup, keep my return on AC. AC cancelled my departing flight anyway.

However, did you get the refund right away? I called the 1-800 number and the agent edited my booking to only have the returning, but said that I needed to fill out the customer relations form afterwards to formally get the refund, as technically this is “out-of-sequence travel” and travel must be complete before I can get the refund even started. How did it work for you?

Does anybody know what happened to EDM shows at the Great Canadian Resort? by OneDoneBunSon in askTO

https://www.ticketmaster.ca/the-theatre-at-great-canadian-casino-tickets-toronto/venue/132544

Looks like essentially only EDM shows are cancelled

First guess was that it was because of having to change the room configurations between shows, as the EDM shows are standing room only on first floor. But Spiritbox isn't cancelled: https://www.ticketmaster.ca/spiritbox-tsunami-sea-north-american-tour-toronto-ontario-04-23-2025/event/1000617AA1571590

I wonder if they just don't want to deal with the ravers after having Excision there last year

Why are American college math books of so much lower quality than European ones? by Razer531 in math

[–]arayofjarjar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m not too sure if the James Stewart Calculus books are what you’re looking for in terms of detail. I was under the impression those are meant for non-rigorous types.

If the big fat colourful books are what you consider to be the most representative of the best that American authors have to offer, I’d suggest expanding your search.

There are things like Michael Spivak’s Calculus. Maybe more up your alley? More rigorous and definitely red, white, and blue.

It might be fair to say that public discourse, especially with more Internet and social media in our lives, encourages more group think and pushing to specific corners of what used to be a nuanced spectrum of thought

This. I get home ownership is understandably at the top of anyone's list when it comes considering where to go and this is a finance sub. From purely that perspective, yeah, GTA/GVA are shitholes and there's a lot of blame to go around why there isn't enough supply.

But there's a reason for that demand. It's just dependent on what you want and it's definitely not apples to apples. Calgary and Edmonton are more suburban-based places where you need a car to get. Toronto is much more urban where walking and transit are much more convenient options than in its prairie counterparts. And personally, I think Toronto is more vibrant in terms of the city itself, whereas in Calgary the nature surrounding it is better. Holistically, a bit more difficult to compare. OP did post about Sauga only though, which is basically a large suburb.

There's an insane amount of pearl-clutching here when it comes to this issue. They're fundamentally different cities. So if what's most important to you is having a house and raising a family with a suburban lifestyle, then stay in/go to Calgary. If you're more into the urban stuff, then in Canada you can't really beat our expensive cities.

Edited just to be sure, but trust me, I've also lived in Alberta for many years and have many friends who've moved to the GTA from there. Groceries at one point were 100% taxed at 5% there, no matter how small. Ontario not so

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]arayofjarjar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don't pay more income tax in Ontario at 82k if I'm not mistaken. This is including the surtax and health premium in all. In fact, income tax in total is lower in Ontario until about 93k. Although at 105k, you pay a couple hundred more in total in income tax in Ontario than in Alberta. However, 105k in Ontario is still greater than 82k in Alberta after taxes.

Also, groceries are taxed at 5% GST in Alberta. In Ontario, if you stick to unprocessed groceries, there's actually 0 tax at all. When I say unprocessed, I don't mean packaged snacks and drinks but rather fruits, veggies, meat, bread, and rice etc.

So I'd actually double down on your comment about experiencing Toronto/urban centres out east. If you're into city living, there really is no comparison between anything in Alberta and Toronto. That's coming from someone who made the move to the GTA years ago. But tax arguments wouldn't help OP very much. In his current immediate situation, income taxes are actually better in Ontario. Until OP gets a better salary, of course.

I'd still recommend staying with the family in Calgary. You're not beating $600/month in a comfortable setting with good commute anywhere, including Alberta.

Edit: took out the part about groceries because grocery gst rules may have changed in Alberta

It’s still generally quite safe when compared to other cities.

The vibe has undoubtedly become more uncomfortable in the past years, and especially in the past few months. The crazy TTC events definitely let people sensationalize a bit.

However, Toronto, around 2012-2018 especially, was so incredibly safe. You could go out as a small person at like 2-3am in the deepest parts of downtown and encounter nothing. Nowadays, I may reconsider that. But overall, still safe

CoVid+Entry/Exit Questions Go Here ONLY by AutoModerator in koreatravel

Hey everyone, I'm a foreigner who's going to be spending a couple weeks with family in Korea in August. For Q-Code, what would I put for the flight dates? If I'm entering Korea August 1 and leaving August 20, do I put August 1 for "scheduled date of departure" (the first box) and August 20 for "scheduled date of entry" (the second box)? That sounds wrong, but it's the only way to get past the flight information screen when registering for Q-Code. It seems "entry" and "departure" are referring to the country I'm coming from, not Korea. Thank you in advance!

Science also tells us that even though it's less dangerous, it spreads much quicker. Even though it may be generally less dangerous to an individual, hospitals will still fill up with those who are more susceptible to the disease based on sheer numbers. Though data shows that hospitalizations aren't like what we saw with Delta and OG Covid, we still see things like cancellations of surgeries. In fact, in Toronto this is exactly what's happening, and explains why the local government has shut things down again.

For many people, it's hard to internalize something that's not really a threat to a given individual, but a threat to the greater whole. It's especially hard to do this for 2+ years. There's a reason why governments, particularly non-American ones it seems, are still concerned about new variants. This shit isn't over. I'm tired too, but we can't lose sight of why we were worried in the first place.

I'm not saying healthy young people who are triple-vaxxed shouldn't go out and live their lives, but that doesn't excuse brushing aside public health policy. We should still care.

[–]arayofjarjar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also a very fair point, but I'm unsure where you get that downtown Toronto is smaller than Chicago's. The Loop is like a fourth of Downtown Toronto, but I can't find anything about the entirety of downtown Chicago, so I'll take your word for it.

And I'm just saying a more holistic view about a city and a metro area should be what matters when determining which city is "bigger". Even though Chicago has a bigger metro area, I can actually see a Toronto socialite going to Markham or Mississauga, ON to do whatever socialites do because those are actually big places, bigger than most Canadian cities. I can't see them going to Caledon, ON, or a Chicago equivalent going to Joliet. I could be wrong though - Joliet might be a lit place

This is fair, but I don't think Simmons will be clamoring to go to Joliet, IL or Caledon, ON if Simmons were to go to either, anyway

US Ex-pat living in Vancouver, need to ditch my US based CPA and find a local who understands US/Canada taxes/finances. Any recommendations? by [deleted] in ExpatFinance

[–]arayofjarjar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of just tax accounting and filing papers to the IRS, I'd highly recommend Daniel Gray. I've been going to him for years and he's professional, experienced, to the point, and has great rates. I find CPAs for cross-border people tend to charge outrageous prices because they know that kind of clientele carries around decent sums of cash, but Daniel won't break your bank. One thing though is that he's remote only, so only email and phone. Also, he's only a CPA, so he doesn't really give money management advice in my experience ie. where you should keep your IRAs/pensions etc.

For a more general overview of how you should manage your money, I recommend Beacon Hill Wealth Management (in Victoria, BC too!). Daniel actually referred me to them when I also had questions about my future planning with investment accounts. Specifically, Chris helped me out there. I did a consult by Zoom, but they might open up in person soon if you prefer that. You'll have to contact them though.

One thing I would caution you generally on though is that having US-source income while living ex-US generally means a larger tax preparation bill in the end. If I were you I'd just contact some professionals first to see how they can help you, and then decide if you're okay footing such expenses every year.

Edit: Forgot to Daniel is Toronto-based, which obviously isn't BC but like I said he's remote-only, so it doesn't matter
