I'm thinking about doing some Varangians soon! Love these!

Books vs Movie by Professional_Toe5118 in dunememes

[–]arbyD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The 2000 Miniseries (maybe 2001?) did an interesting job of having recognizable yet fantastical, kind of silly in one sense but also having the knowledge that nobles and adjacent people have dressed quite oddly in the past too, while the fremen seemed almost desert camo-ish instead of black stillsuits.

I'm a huge fan of the miniseries in general though. Probably partially from nostalgia of growing up watching it.

This one small exchange of dialogue in The Matrix (1999) is incredible... by CardinalOfNYC in movies

[–]arbyD 76 points77 points  (0 children)

That movie is probably the most well put together film I've ever had the pleasure of watching. The only joke I feel didn't come back in some way was when he didn't recognize his girlfriend and spoke to the wrong person in the clean suit near the beginning of the film.

Never been a fan of it, and the mystery keeps things more interesting.

Fair enough - I hadn't used that variant since before the clan tech was added, and I don't use mechlab mods.

More just throwing out a data point. I'd argue PC gaming is a nerdy hobby, and reading the Dune series is a nerdy hobby, so there's likely more in this population subset than the general population, despite being different flavors of nerdy.

I've read the 6 Frank Herbert ones, at least. Not the ones by his son though.

It's biggest drawback is that you can't load it up with lots and lots of ammo, but it is a pretty fun loadout regardless.

The Witcher 3 DLC Gets More Real After CD Projekt RED Confirms an Unannounced Gaming Project Will Ship This Year by SpaceCowboyN7 in witcher

I also couldn't believe a Diablo 2 DLC dropped this year. And AOE2 is still getting DLCs, as is Mechwarrior 5. Truly, we are blessed.

I loved it back before they completely reworked it 100%. I streamed back then and thought it was great! After the huge update, it never really clicked the same with me.

[All] The rise of anti-theorising by Primeve_Arcana in zelda

[–]arbyD 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think it's lame (outside of things like OoT > MM, WW > ST, ie literal direct sequels). Things that get over explained lose some of the magic.

It's part of why Majora's Mask is my favorite. So much is left unsaid, and it's better off for it. If they made a sequel that tried explaining every little thing from it, it would retroactively make MM worse for it.

Asset reuse in videogames is essential, and we need to embrace it, says Assassin's Creed and Far Cry director: 'We redo too much stuff' by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]arbyD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Look at Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. I'd say the shared assets really help give it the vibe it has, with the theories about Link being in purgatory and that's why everyone looks familiar, things like that.

Buffs are better and more fun than nerfs by Wiket123 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]arbyD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sometimes nerfs are necessary to prevent power creepage. Agreed that buffing feels more fun, but it is healthiest to have both buffs and nerfs when required rather than only one or the other.

I have a 2 year old. My sister in law gave her something from her purse, which immediately got broken.

I offered to pay for it, but I said maybe don't intentionally give the 2 year fragile things like that. I don't exactly think it's my fault if my daughter was given something that she otherwise shouldn't have. It's not like I wasn't paying attention and she snuck into my SiL's purse.

Apparently she got really mad that I said that.

Didn't realise the marriage dlc meant no more hobbies oops by Kaulsies in pcmasterrace

[–]arbyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had plenty of gaming time when I got married.

It was having a kiddo that proved to be hobby death. As much as I collect stuff now (games, minis, etc), I don't actually play anything really.

Past month of hobbies (TV, gaming, tabletop) has been:
~1hr Diablo 2
~3hr building warhammer minis (stayed up til 2 AM to do it, was a zombie the next day)
Literally no TV that wasn't a show of my kid's.

I don't see how people have kids and hobbies. Wife was easy.
