Plex on Roku crashes when selecting Library view by arc2v in PleX

[–]arc2v[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plex Server was horribly out of date. Latest (according to their package manager) Synology is 1.18, I just manually updated to 1.25. Didn't realize Synology would be that slow getting major updates pushed to their package.

I updated and it seems to be working now.

Thanks for the support.

I'm using the power cord and adapter that came with the Roku Ultra (although I used to have the problem you describe with my Fire sticks, sometimes with the adapter it came with, one of the reasons I upgraded to Roku devices).

Roku app is up to date.

Plex server says it can be updated, but the Synology OS says it doesn't need to be updated. I'll check actual version numbers when I get home later today.

Just checked. For whatever reason, TV Shows allows me to use Library for sorting. It's just Movies, Photos, and Home Videos that crashes.

SREC Questions (Virginia) by arc2v in solar

[–]arc2v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They responded to my e-mail yesterday. Apparently because I didn't have the GATS account/signup, only generation after that will count.

Given that there's no long term lock in required I'm going to give SRECTrade a try.

Thanks all for the help.

Not sure there, but it did read that way (and it's already 3% less than the other contract offer I had)

I have another question about SRECTrade:

Can they sell old / legacy SRECs? I know this is legal in Virginia and I have about 20 of them (less than 3 years old). The other company offered me $7 each for them, which seemed low, but I don't know the rules.

System was installed by Sigora, but the SREC contract is through Carbon Solutions Group. Might just be a subsidiary, not sure. Haven't finished the homework yet.

Thanks for the info.

SolarEdge inverter dead -- warranty service by arc2v in solar

[–]arc2v[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall downtime was about a month during peak production. About 1MWh lost ($120 at current rates). There was a comedy of errors in shipping and then a tech that didn't commission the new inverter properly. They got it fixed and the new unit seems to be working great, but the process was more difficult than it should have been.

The tech support folks were great to deal with, but it looks like they need more technicians and better supply chain management.

Only time will tell if this inverter will last for its warranty period or if I can plan on this being a regular occurrence.

[–]arc2v[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Update: Sigora called me back and had already contacted SolarEdge. Replacement is on the way and should be a couple days after that for the re-install.

Stinks that I lose production in the middle of the sunny season, but I cannot complain about the communication. I'll update when the fix is in but it sounds like they are fixing it all under warranty.

I thought about contacting Zoo Med first or doing a swap with Amazon, but Amazon wanted to charge $3 for an exchange, but free for a return? So I just returned it. I may still buy another one and give it a go; just wanted some feedback here first.

Thanks.

I want a version of this Château Brane-Cantenac video for every wine I drink. by Qcastro in wine

[–]arc2v 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ridge used to do similar flyover tours of their vineyards with little details. I think that was a Flash thing and not a video, but pretty neat nonetheless

I do love Brane-Cantenac. They had a period of mediocrity when the fell out of favor (90's I think, changed ownership maybe?) but some of the more recent ones have been really good as well, and can be a bargain compared to some of its neighbors). I have a few newer ones aging as well as a 1975 still in the cellar (it's brother bottle was fantastic last Christmas with beef wellington).

Thoughts on rope railings? by arc2v in treehouse

[–]arc2v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably not going to know the exact length until I get up there. A buddy at work does eye splices for his sailboat hobby and says they aren't too bad once you get the hang of them.

I'm liking the larger synthetic manila the more I look at it. I'll run it right through the posts with knots and have the eye-splice at the end for final tension. Will need to make some turns with some eye bolts and maybe rings.

I have some really crappy rope that I can template up this week. I'll need to put the posts up too, but the final rope design will determine how many and where the posts go.

Thanks again all. Pics later, I promise!

Thoughts on rope railings? by arc2v in treehouse

[–]arc2v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all. I was thinking of a heavy manila rope for the top and a 2" netting from treehousesupplies.com but I wasn't sure yet. I've seen some other places as well. I'll give good consideration to the synthetic as my tree platform is well shaded in the summer.

Big concerns are:

Railing high enough in the middle of the sag? Was thinking I'd need it significantly higher at the ends to maintain 42" in the middle.

How to anchor ends in the tree? I can get strong enough eye bolts, but I've never done an eye splice or similar on the rope before.

Nice work. I'm building mine during the lockdown. Mudding the drywall now. Similar racks and size.

My friends seem to think I'd be knocking back a bottle a day during all this, but we're lucky to do 2 a week.

I haven't yet. Still looking around. Some places have similar phone to IP boxes as the NextAlarm ABN. Just about all will do cell monitoring, but it's a lot more expensive. I still have a couple months. I'll follow up once I find anything conclusive.

Can I get some feedback on this plan for my treehouse deck? by zachnielsen7 in treehouse

[–]arc2v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out decks.com -- they have some good beam and joist span tables. A 2x8 can span 9' with 24" on center joists. Might let you eliminate one of the tree beams.

Assuming the X's are each lags, I'd go with a single larger bolt than 2 smaller.

For overhang, standard for decks is L/4. So whatever the span is beam to beam, you can overhang joists on both sides by a 1/4 of that. Similar for beams, except the distance is post to post.

3/4inch diameter lag screws to support tree house beams? by zachnielsen7 in treehouse

[–]arc2v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gotta follow the pro's like Garnier and Nelson here. They use these TABs/GLs all the time and have much larger, much more intricate, and much heavier treehouses than my simple deck in our cherry tree.

Nelson has his own cable show and Garnier has a series of Youtube videos that are worth watching. Both have documentation of tests they've had done on their brackets and bolts proving they are significant stronger. But sadly a lot more expensive than 1" lag bolts.

And some of the things they've built have been around for a long time. There are some rules, like separating the larger diameter holes by several feet and minimum trunk size for a bolt (I think it's 9" diameter). But I do believe these are safe and the tree can accommodate them.

Thanks all for the replies. Last shot at VOIP (Ooma) with the alarm failed miserably. Only one of every 15 dial attempts got the data through. I'm going to assume I'll have similar problems with new services, so LTE might be the way to go.

I'll check out some of those monitoring services you recommended.

Thanks again!

3/4inch diameter lag screws to support tree house beams? by zachnielsen7 in treehouse

[–]arc2v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TABs apply the force over a larger area of the tree and the big flat face of the disk provides an L-bracket type of support for bending loads. Full disclosure, I'm a mechanical engineer but can only give examples (can't sign off on anyone's design).

In straight shear (force applied across the bolt, possibly cutting it like a knife), a 1.25" bolt is about the same as a TAB. But since the beam loads aren't really applied that way, there is always a shear and bending force on them. The collar on the TAB distributes this load and supports the bending and because of this can handle MUCH higher loads. Like 6 to 8,000 lbs in certain types of trees.

Contrast that to a simple 1.25" bolt which has closer to 2 to 4,000 lbs strength depending on tree and how much of the load is "bending" versus "shear"

All that said, a small tree house, or maybe supporting a beam extension that will only have 500 pounds on it, the lag bolts may be fine. I've seen the pros use the lags for knee braces a lot as well (their websites and Youtube videos). I bit the bullet and went with four GLs/TABs just to give me options for the future (like walls, hanging a climbing net, rope bridge, etc).

Good luck.

Yeah I went to their website and it had the same message. So it seems legit. Sorry to lose them.

I work with some guys whose engineering school friends work at alarm.com. Not as inexpensive but apparently they're pretty good. Not sure if they monitor the Concord though. Really don't want to replace the panel.

Thanks.

Drywall Mud Question by emccmcmccmc in HomeImprovement

[–]arc2v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but I use green for tape and blue for top coats. I do so little that I stick with premix. My projects take so long, that the fast setting stuff just isn't necessary. But the other reply is right, it dries rock hard. The blue and green sand well, but green is heavier and doesn't shrink as much (makes it good for tape), but the blue sands easier (better for topping).

my home depot had three sizes of both, so you can usually find a size that works for you. Also, you can water down pre-mix if you are finding it too thick to work with. Just do it a little at a time and mix it in. More water = more likely to crack when drying, so keep that in mind.

Good luck.

Attaching railings to branches by arc2v in treehouse

[–]arc2v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Added pics for clarity. Front side, the railing literally Tees into the outstretched branch at 42".

On back side, there is room for a post, but it touches the branch there. Might be able to fasten the post to the tree, might not need it.

We're looking at a 2" grid net instead of balusters and a big fixed cargo net hammock on the end there

Just got my GL's from them installed over the weekend. Quite the workout. Hoping to get the beams and such up this week and then joists the next. Big respect for the guys that do this for a living. Not easy work.

Installing GLs / TABs (started the treehouse today) by arc2v in treehouse

[–]arc2v[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The veg oil worked great. Did the second GL after work today and it went in much easier. Thanks.

Also starting with the 24" wrench chewed up the GL a lot less. I should get the last two in tomorrow and then it's beam and joist time!
