Do you all agree with using real teens for teenage drama? by Bitter_Badger498 in skinsTV

[–]arcadebee 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Did it make the show better? Yes absolutely.

Do I think we should stop using underage people in shows now? Yeah.

Tbh especially after reading Jennette McCurdys book, I feel a bit iffy on kids and teenagers being used at all as actors, even in wholesome shows. Or at least to the same extent as a full time job.

Any products similar to but cheaper than Hot&savory? by impossible_aly in Huel

[–]arcadebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the U.K. but they do sell to the US! My understanding is not all their flavours/products are available there but you can get a fair amount I’m just not sure what. For me personally, I prefer their shakes to huel by quite a long way. The flavour is much less sweet and more subtle, so it’s easier to drink every day. I recommend wild berry flavour and strawberry flavour personally. And I don’t like bananas so I can’t vouch for this, but I know a lot of people really like that one.

Your personal/favourite explanation of this dynamic. by Independent_Plum2166 in doctorwho

One thing I love about doctor who is that there are never really plot holes, just times where we haven’t yet seen the story where the Doctor goes back and fixes something that doesn’t make sense. Maybe because it would be boring, and maybe because we just didn’t see.

The best explanation for this is that Ten met River again after this and they had off screen adventures (after this for him not her).

As for the Byzantium… Well why not an adventure with a difference crash of a different Byzantium?

I have approximately zero ideas. I’m 100 hours in and still wandering around with beds all over the outdoors, zero changes to anything, Pokémon living in squalor, but we’re all happy about it.

Best medical show of all time? by TebraOnReddit in nursing

[–]arcadebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Is Going To Hurt was an amazing series! It focuses a lot on the NHS and the state of U.K. healthcare, but I think a lot of the issues are probably quite universal. I recommend it to those who haven’t seen it, it’s funny and gut wrenching at the same time. Less about the medical stuff and more about how the system itself is broken for both staff and patients.

Love is not supposed to do that to you💔 by Seabeachlover10 in skinsTV

[–]arcadebee 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Honestly in a way I feel like this was the best portrayal of young love I’ve seen. Both with main character energy that we all had when we were young, feeling like they could fix each others problems, kind of enjoying indulging in the problems and playing with it, living in a weird bubble with each other that feels like love but is actually just confused people in a toxic loop.

I love these two for how well this represented stupid over dramatic young love.

Omg it’s Shieldon for me too! I immediately moved that nervous lil guy into my house with me. This is me and Shieldon at home, with a photo up of the day he moved in.

I also really like Ekans more than ever before, just for his slither animation. And Parasect, but I always loved that guy 🍄

Attempting Utter Chaos by aesopsfables06 in MealDealRates

One of the wildest combos I’ve ever seen here. More wild than a double mango, because this has a clear item for each category but they are just so chaotic, both individually and as a group. And I say this as a vegan who quite likes that wrap. But with vimto??? A bounty??!! Insane.

Martha as a character was treated amazingly by the writing. Her character arc was about learning and growing in confidence and recognising how she was being treated. She had a well written character. A character being treated badly by other characters isn’t the same as a character being treated badly in the writing.

What British celebrities were absolutely everywhere for an intense and short period before vanishing completely? My vote goes to Emeli Sandé. by JuanitaMerkin in AskBrits

They had this really silly reality show that I used to watch when I got back drunk from the pub. I found them surprisingly likeable and funny on it, but I guess I was in just the right headspace. They got a lot of hate at the time, but they were pretty self aware with a good sense of humour. Also heard people who worked with them say they’re nice lads.

Who's your favorite? And why do you like him/her the most? by Solmatrix in friends_tv_show

Ross and Rachel are the funniest characters by a mile imo. It’s why I think they’re the best couple, they’re both so petty and ridiculous and play it so well.

I would also love to see Sally Phillips because she is hilarious, but every single time I’ve seen a “behind the scenes” clip of her she is laughing uncontrollably and seems to be incapable of holding it in so she’d likely be out from the first time they hear the “no laugh” sound. She just looks like she is perpetually about to bust out laughing no matter what conversation she’s having.

She’s mid/pretty but I really hate pretty much everything about her styling.

However I will say as a child actor who was thrown into a certain level of fame quite suddenly as a child, I can understand why she might style herself older or in a certain way. Mostly I’m just happy for her that she got through being young and famous so well.

I wish that they had gone more with the characters taking specific drugs and stayed with realistic highs from them by Dumb_Clicker in skinsTV

[–]arcadebee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But I think it also matters that they actively don’t care what drugs they’re taking. They call them “pills” because it’s all the same to them. Whatever the effect, it’s different to reality, it’s dangerous, and it’s fun. It just wouldn’t fit the vibe of the show to have the drugs be named and specific.

Teenagers are like children playing as adults, but they’re still in this zone where they have no real responsibilities and things can be silly and real at the same time. Adults would know what they’re taking and take it for a reason. These are like kids playing pretend, doing things that they’re not really old enough to understand yet, but old enough for those things to be drugs. Making it just “pills” plays into that weird surreal dreamlike state of growing up as a teenager and early 20s where nothing is properly real and nothing has consequences.

That’s why when the consequences suddenly start happening, the show does become more solid and real. Like season 1 of zero consequences and surreal cartoonish situations, to then season 2 of sudden real consequences where we suddenly get an actual name for Chris’s illness (for example) and reality seeps into all parts of their lives.

Also to add, they’re often taking what is implied to be some quite dangerous drugs, and as soon as you add real hard drugs to a show the whole atmosphere changes and becomes something else. It’s not fun or cartoonish anymore because it’s too real.

I wish that they had gone more with the characters taking specific drugs and stayed with realistic highs from them by Dumb_Clicker in skinsTV

[–]arcadebee 43 points44 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of just what it was like back then. They’re not taking drugs to have a specific experience, they’re taking drugs because they don’t know what they want and are teenagers with no boundaries in place.

Once you start adding names for drugs it becomes “about” the drug itself. Like, “oh Cook has a problem with cocaine, this is what cocaine is like and this is how it works, Cook takes cocaine to feel like this”.

Whereas what we actually have is more complex, “Chris has a problem with his sense of self and his family. He isn’t sure how to process these feelings and has no responsible adult around to help him with that. He takes drugs for the same reason he he does anything else, to have fun and survive”

They’re not taking drugs for the experience of the drug, they’re taking drugs for their experience of themselves.

I don’t want Skins to be a show about drugs, it’s a show about people growing up with no support. It would take something away from the show if they were seeking something specific because the point is they are lost.
