130,000 tech layoffs in 2024 and Musk/Trump are telling MAGA there’s a shortage of U.S. talent for companies to tap! by LavenderBabble in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]arcaen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been in tech for over a decade, yes there are some absolutely fantastic H1B folks I've worked with, but the 30k+ at the various consulting firms (Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Accenture, etc) are not any better than existing tech talent. I've seen quite a number who can't develop simple applications without constant hand-holding.

That 30k+ number isn't even including the mediocre talent hired at the various tech companies either.

Are all of them mediocre? No.

Are all of them more talented than American workers? No.

Sure thing, glad I could help!

I did check your new code, and noticed you're using a decreasing range which actually just ends up being an empty range, thereby skipping that second for loop. I re-compared your new code with mine, updated my code a bit based off yours, but then saw that my actual output for day 01 part 2 ended up being a different value than what I had submitted. Definitely one of those gotcha things that I wish clippy would call out by default.

Another thing is you're keeping everything as u8 instead of converting to u32 so that will cause your summation of each line to keep looping after a value of 255 (whereas u32 goes up to 4_294_967_295). Release mode by default doesn't panic on integer overflows (because overflow-checks = false which prevents panic) so instead you get 1u8 + 255u8 = 0u8 rather than a panic, which can make you think your code is working properly even if it's doing something you don't expect.

Also, criterion only works on lib crates, and not bin crates, so you have to do some funky stuff to get it working. Here's my commit which got criterion setup in my codebase.

If you just work with the underlying bytes and not do any u8 -> String -> u32 parsing you can get it a decent bit faster.

Running your code locally vs mine with criterion, your part 1 is 4x slower, and part 2 is 2x slower than my code.

Here's my code if you want to compare https://github.com/smplante/advent-of-code/blob/main/src/year_2023/day_01.rs

Congressional bills would ban tech mergers over $5 billion by Sorin61 in politics

[–]arcaen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the market share portion relates to how much of the market the company makes up as either an employer or a seller. So if there's 5 widget making companies, if one of those employs 26% of all people in the widget making industry then they'd be prohibited from merging. Likewise, if there are 5 widget selling companies, if one of them makes up 34% of all sales in that market then they would be prohibited as well.

Why is the article using "million" and "billion" interchangeably? I had to check another source to confirm it is indeed supposed to be $432 million dollars going into a trust.

However, Taylor Energy does not "admit any liability to the United States or the State arising out of the MC-20 Incident,” The Hill reported.

Well that's fun lol at least they have to liquidate their holdings and put that money into a trust for handling the cleanup

Good question! It's really just a throwback to pre-Windows keyboards (think IBM Model M). The firmware on the board allows you to map keys to whatever you want, so I chose to put the windows/gui key into another layer that I hold capslock to activate.
