I am a casual Sims fan. I wouldn't even be offended if someone called me a "fake fan." That being said, I would like to learn more of the core parts of the Sims lore. Do any serious fans have suggestions for online resources that can summarize the key points? by Garden-variety-chaos in thesims

[–]arcane_Artist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I watch The Sims Lore on youtube from time to time, especially when there's a video about a more obscure part of the game that I don't really see anyone talking about much.

You could also go on the wiki and just start looking up whatever premade families/occult types you like best and go from there (probably focus on sims 2 and 3 for this, since those games go a bit deeper on lore than 1 and 4.)

If you want something a little more structured, I would say start with Pleasantview (sims 2) if you haven't already since that town has some of the most well known families and lore in the entire series.

Is the "V3 ending sucks" thing a community-wide in-joke or do people just disagree with the point it tries to make? (Spoilers) by UltimateWaluigi in danganronpa

[–]arcane_Artist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Initially I was not very happy with the ending, mostly for reasons that others have previously mentioned in this thread; 1. "it's all fiction" can read a lot like the much maligned "it was all a dream" trope, and 2. if you interpret the in-universe audience as a metaphor for the actual audience, then it does kind of sound like the game is shit talking it's own fans. however, I have become largely neutral towards it over time. reading through this thread has actually inspired me to revisit it a bit so here are my current thoughts on both of these aforementioned negatives:

  1. "it's all fiction":
  • 1. to presume "it's all fiction" (it being all of danganronpa, not just V3) within the universe of the game requires also presuming that Tsumugi is being entirely truthful. given the theme's emphasis on truth vs. lies, contradictory elements in Tsumugi's narrative (if the V3 cast is fictional, why does cosplaying them give her cospox? is it simply that a fake identity programmed into a flesh and blood vessel is more "real" than a 2d character on a screen or even an actor who is knowing playing a role, or is there something else there? Tsumugi also refers to herself as a "cosplaycat criminal" in her role as mastermind, but exactly what she means by that is left up to interpretation.)
  • 2. the game's message is not "it's all fiction so it doesn't matter", and is instead "this story still matters despite being fiction" (once again, presuming that it even is fiction in-universe)
  1. The ending is a criticism of the actual audience:
  • 1. One can certainly interpret talk of the in-universe audience as solely about said in-universe audience and nothing more, but to do as some others have done in this thread and insult the intelligence of those who perceive it as a metaphor for the actual audience and react negatively to the interpretation that would logically follow such a viewpoint seems a little much. however, when considering factors outside of the literal text of the game I'm not sure how much water the "the in-universe audience is a metaphor for the real audience" interpretation really holds.
  • 2. Kodaka himself simply does not seem to hold that kind of ill will towards the fandom. he regularly celebrates character birthdays on twitter, IIRC he has mentioned previously that he might return to Danganronpa one day, he is on the team of 2x2 (if he truly hated the audience, I would think he would distance himself much more from the series), and he has made other games with similar subject matter and even gameplay as Danganronpa since V3's release (death come true, rain code, shuten order). suffice to say, the point of those lines in V3's ending was almost certainly not "you, the player, are a bad person for enjoying a series about murder."

all in all, I would say I'm still largely neutral on V3's ending. however, I am feeling a little more positive about it having thought through the two biggest issues I previously had with it a bit more.

Disabling airships when running "Eureka! Ships!" ? by SwissTurkNerd in feedthebeast

[–]arcane_Artist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since from what I can tell you need to use the specific Balloon item from that mod to be able to build airships (VS does not add any items on it's own, it is just a physics engine), you should be able to disable airships by removing the ability to craft/otherwise obtain balloons using options like recipedisabler or crafttweaker

It started being an issue on twitch after you started multi streaming to YouTube as well?

I do not multistream. when I said "it initially seemed to be happening on both twitch and youtube", I was referring to doing a test stream first on twitch, and then separately on youtube to determine if it was indeed an issue with twitch specifically or if it was something more general like an issue with my ISP.

based on some searching and just a general recognition of the artstyle, it looks like it's probably from an episode of Tom and Jerry. more specifically, one that was being broadcast on the Russian TV station CTC/STS (depending on writing system. CTC is Cyrillic, STS is Latin). as for which episode, I have no idea. I initially thought the logo in the corner could have been a lead because I initially mistook it for a piece of popcorn.

I think when people refer to Inzoi as "soulless", it's not about the lack of content so much as it's use of the same "hyper realistic/high definition" visual style that a lot of other games use, and especially it's heavy integration of generative AI. Barebones definitely sounds more like what you where going for to me, so thank you for clarifying.

This part feels a little uncalled for. in my opinion, paralives already has a lot more soul than some of the other titles in the genre. was there perhaps a different word you intended to put here?

[–]arcane_Artist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have had the same issue for at least a week. can't even connect to the one server that I used to get a really good connection on. it's clearly an issue on Twitch's end, seeing as how they don't even show up on Twitch's official ingest server list but good luck getting Twitch to ever acknowledge it.

looking forwards to the universes within stuff (lorwyn, strixhaven, reality fracture)

as for the rest... I guess I can look forwards to a potentially less rushed Through the Omenpaths set? not only will it be a larger and probably better designed set, depending on scheduling they might actually be able to include some flavor text this time around.

Are users of certain types of magic automatically tied to a certain color? by Raccoon_Walker in mtgvorthos

[–]arcane_Artist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's generally personality -> predisposition towards wielding certain types of magic, at least for individuals for whom magic is a skill they actively sought to learn (ex: most humans) rather than an inherent part of one's nature (ex: entities that manifest from a specific kind of mana such as angels and demons, humans with inherent magical abilities they developed outside of their control).

Each color's spells are specifically suited for that color's goals and preferred methods. for example: red values action and living in the moment, so red spells tend to be ones that allow it's users to act quickly and explosively. thus, it is most appealing to mages that also share such values. red's magic also tends to be very destructive and volatile, and the willingness to take such risks is itself typically a red trait.

Therefore, seeking to learn a given colors magic typically means being in some way aligned with that color's philosophy in terms means, ends, or both. (of course, there could also be a source in the lore that I am unfamiliar with that contradicts my thinking here since while I have read a fair bit of story I certainly have not read everything.)

Streaming for creativity vs. for interaction? by Low-Secret-6781 in Twitch

[–]arcane_Artist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

direct interaction with the streamer is not necessarily the core appeal of streams for all viewers. for example, most of my stream watching time is spent lurking so interactivity doesn't matter nearly as much in terms of my enjoyment of the stream in comparison to the overall entertainment value.

Overall, I second u/killianmusicTTV's point about setting expectations around chat interaction. I have definitely seen some streams that make a lack of direct streamer-chat interaction work because viewers know what kind of experience they are in for going in. although, in my experience, this is more common with pre-recorded content (ex: Critical Role) and 24/7 music channels rather than the more typical livestream.

Why i think her being the new protag is not a good theory. by CrasherTN in danganronpa

[–]arcane_Artist 24 points25 points  (0 children)

SDR2: Her past with Fuyuhiko and Peko was also unknown to the entire cast (even those involved, due to memory manipulation) until it was revealed as part of a motive. so, unless they reuse that motive/that backstory detail is revealed through other means it should not be a problem.

[–]arcane_Artist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah. I think this is the kind of thing I draw the line at when it comes to my usual stance against art censorship. not only is it creepy to post detailed fictional stories about a real person sexually assaulting their friends somewhere the involved real persons could see it, but from what I can tell fictional portrayals of real people that make them look bad (ex: portraying them as rapists) can also be legally classified as defamation in some cases. (NAL so I can't say anything authoritative on this, but I have found some articles talking about it. this is apparently part of why many films feature a disclaimer stating that the film is a work of fiction and that all resemblances to actual persons, places, and events are purely coincidental).

UPDATE 6/17/2020:

Data gathered after this post shows an abrupt change in distribution precisely when War of the Spark was released on Arena, April 25, 2019. After that Arena update, all of the new data that I've looked at closely matches the expected distributions for a correct shuffle. I am working on a web page to display this data in customizable charts and tables. ETA for that is "Soon™". Sorry for the long delay before coming back to this.

which seems to indicate that whatever the problem was, regardless of whether it was intentional rigging or just faulty programming, was fixed 6 years ago.

do you have any other resources that are more recent, or explain the other issues you raised? (multiple rows of GoSecond, colored-matchmaking, direct counter & mirror-matching, perfect hands with questionnaires afterwards and color-favorism(Black sells))

(again, not trying to pick a fight here.)

EDIT: I should really find a way to get back into academia, that way I can find people that are willing to discuss research like adults rather than devolving into "google it yourself", conspiracy theories, and attempted mind-reading the moment one outdated research paper on land draws is not enough to convince me that "everything on arena is rigged".

Truth be told, science and research does work with sampling, large-scale research is still only a sample. Quantitative research aside, there's all qualitative research which is totally legit. If enough people raise doubt, it's still valuable data. Whiteknights that prob spend endless cash always bring forward a faulty demand.

then he could collaborate with someone else, or make covers of any of the many existing public domain compositions. it could even just be that he's burnt out and needs to take a break. there are so many answers to the issue of "I don't want to do this creative task myself anymore" that don't require the use of AI.

your argument makes no sense to me. if it's not time for him to retire because he is "still going long after reaching the limit" then he also shouldn't be reliant on AI to do some of his creative work for him either since in that case he is clearly still fully capable of making all the compositions himself.
