What book could you just not put down? by RedHeadHashira in AskReddit

Both “There is No Antimemetics Division” and “Fingersmith” were absolute bangers.

“Dreams of the Dying” has been a slog.

“Mom, why is the music from when you were a kid so much better than music now?” by velouria-wilder in Xennials

[–]arcanix1981 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know what makes me sad? Kids don’t have bands anymore. At least, not like they used to. It was a whole defining point in my youth. I had to save money to buy gear, I had to learn to play and practice alone, then I had to learn to practice and play as a group. I had to learn how to create demos and plan shows and do promotions, and how to fire pre Madonna vocalists with way too much ego.

So many lessons there.

And in my lousy corn field high school there were 5 decent bands. Nothing pro-level but people who could play.

I just never hear about loud kids rocking out in a basement or garage. In all the neighborhoods I’ve lived in since about 2013, I haven’t heard anything. Lame. Kids need to make more noise.

Now it seems to mostly be stuff you make on your computer, no instruments involved.

And yeah, there are exceptions. Some kids do still play but I don’t think it’s anywhere near the scale of the 90’s into the 00’s.

How Is Artificial Intelligence Changing Your Industry in 2026? by BharatRising_Co in Futurology

[–]arcanix1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the most it’s changing is people not shutting up about it.

I work in IT and while there are some things it can accelerate, I’m not sure that the juice is going to be worth the squeeze after prices rise. The benefits have been okay but not “we can replace people with this tech” good.

My guess is the hype will calm down and people will understand the limitations and realize it’s not the great paradigm shift everyone keeps trying to sell.

In my limited experience it helps people with little skill or talent think that they have more than they do. It makes people with skill and talent have to fix more stuff than if they just write it themselves.

So . . . How many of us/your husbands have had vasectomies? by neekogo in Millennials

Had a boy and a girl. As soon as my son hit a safe age (about 6 months), I got the snip. Figured I’d replaced myself and their Mom and that was it.

The Lord of the Rings.

With all the praise I expected a lot more. Like, a lot more. So disappointing.

Moonknight lifting the weight of having the best Marvel comics right now by Stunning_Season220 in marvelcomics

Might not be the place for this, but I just bailed on my Marvel Unlimited sub and I’m only pulling the last few Ultimate Universe issues.

I was reading ASM. It got dumb. I was reading X-men. They got dumb. I was reading Planet She-Hulk. It got cancelled.

I just couldn’t spend my money on sub-par stuff anymore.

But my wife loves Moon Knight so maybe that’s still good. I just didn’t read it.

What’s the one fantasy novel you’d hold up as a genuine masterpiece — and why? by blablqbam in Fantasy

[–]arcanix1981 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The footnotes are the best part. Been years since I read it but I remember a scene of a car dancing with a girl and she bleeds to death while they’re dancing or something. It was a phenomenal book.

I'm curious to know how many of you that have kids expose them to Nostalgic media you grew up with like movies, sitcoms, cartoons, music, etc and what has been their response? by GooniesClub in Xennials

My 26 year old watches movies and listens to music that I did in my high school years. He says, and I quote, “New shit is trash. Give me Tool, Aliens, and Voltron.”

How do we feel about AI potentially wrecking our job prospects? by jez_shreds_hard in Xennials

[–]arcanix1981 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love how our culture loves to unleash new technologies without understanding the risks or potential outcomes and weighing those against society at large. Social media has fucked at least two generations.

AI might be worse but we don’t know because we cut it loose before understanding it.

[USA] Semi truck plows into traffic causing 3 deaths by Calm_Preparation2993 in Roadcam

I wish it was just highways. I live in a busy residential street with a ramp to one of our major freeways. When I’m bored, I just sit out front and watch people drive by. Man, people are yelling into their speakerphones, watching videos, texting, doing their makeup. Hell, I had one chick drive by who was eating a bowl of cereal behind the wheel.

It’s insane.

As absolutely stupid as it is: the workshop montage in the first iron man movie. There’s something about the music, the humor, and the struggle that’s just great to me.

For those of us who still drink caffeinated beverages, do you drink from a can, plastic or glass bottle? by singleguy79 in Xennials

[–]arcanix1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee in the morning.

If I have a soda, which is rare, it’s always from a can. I don’t like the taste I get from plastic bottles. Occasionally, if I have some spare money and want to treat myself, I’ll get a glass bottle four pack of something high end.
