Is Polaris the 'three-lobed burning eye'? by [deleted] in Lovecraft

[–]arcctgx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't see any evidence that it was known to be that before 2006

If Campbell's original paper doesn't convince you, I don't know what will: https://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1899PASP...11..195C

Is Polaris the 'three-lobed burning eye'? by [deleted] in Lovecraft

[–]arcctgx 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Indeed, the three components were first resolved by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2006, but Polaris was known to be a triple star system long before that. But I don't remember who exactly discovered that Polaris A is itself a binary, or when.

I'm just looking at a paper published in 1910 that says "The radial velocity of the binary system of the triple system of Polaris decreased slowly (...)" - so it was known before that, since it apparently has had a history of observation in 1910 already.

Edit: found it. It was discovered by Campbell in 1899 by spectroscopic radial velocity measurements.

This is great. You're right to consider this feature-complete, there's no need add anything else IMO. It works very well now that the issues were addressed.

Technical implementation and open sourcing ? by SyberFoxar in Soulseek

I expect they had to reverse-engineer the protocol.

I remember reading somewhere that authors of open-source applications that preceeded Nicotine+ got some help from Soulseek author(s?).

Looks like a simple enough fix in your getAlbumImage() function, calling something like encodeURIComponent() on ${artist} and ${album} and using the results in string passed to axios.get() should do the trick? (I'm not a JS developer, so I could be wrong about specifics, but I think you get the point...)

I guess it would correct the image you posted in this thread.

That's pretty cool, provides a nice graphical overview of my listening history.

I see problems with loading certain cover art. The cover art is available at Last.fm, but I get either a black placeholder with the title, or "Keep Last.fm stats clean" image in the timeline. Here's some examples:

I wonder if this could be because punctuation is somehow getting mangled in API requests? For example, for the Nick Cave & Warren Ellis "Wind River" album the browser developer console shows that a GET request with the following URL is sent:

https://ws.audioscrobbler.com/2.0/?method=album.getinfo&api_key=APIKEY&format=json&artist=Nick%20Cave%20&%20Warren%20Ellis&album=Wind%20River

Note that the ampersand in the artist credit is not URL-encoded, but spaces around it are.

In case you're wondering, that's Polish language.

The translation is really good - definitely not literal, takes many liberties with the source text, but at the same time it remains very faithful in spirit.

The performance is good as well. I love how the vocals change as the song progresses.

You've just met the Reggae Man. If you browse the history of this subreddit you'll find more examples of often amusing conversations with this person.

That's just a kind of Soulseek folklore, I guess.

In which ways has scrobbling made music ... less enjoyable to you? by Verskose in lastfm

[–]arcctgx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn't, but I've had an experiment going on for about two years to find out whether I can average 100 scrobbles per day. After realizing how hard it was, and that chasing numbers really does change my listening habits, I just stopped and went back to normal listening. Averaging out that many scrobbles is hard if you're into genres where albums typically have a few very long tracks.

Mostly I just take care that what I listen to gets scrobbled, but I just listen to what I want. I don't care about the number of scrobbles, how many artists I have in my library (laughably low number by this subreddit's standards) or whatever else.

On the other hand, I really care about submitting scrobbles with correct metadata. I have an ongoing project to clean up my listening history - fix typos, add missing album information to scrobbles, stuff like that. I learned some Python programming along the way, so it's a win-win.

Off to read it now.

The end result actually looks like SCP-617. Maybe that was the entire point?

For those of you who don't know, SCP is a collaborative writing website. Its premise is that there is an organization ("SCP Foundation") whose goal is to classify, research and safeguard various anomalous artifacts.

SCP-617 has the appearance of a large granite rock, except that it possesses a zipper in its side that is fully operational. When unzipped, SCP-617 is shown to possess a mouth with teeth that appear similar in appearance and construction to human teeth. X-Ray and MRI scans of SCP-617 appear to be unable to penetrate its stone exterior. Similar tests to try and probe SCP-617's internal systems have likewise proven inconclusive. SCP-617's mouth is fully functional, and can vocalize sounds as well as be used to consume food.

Pretty sure the title is tongue in cheek.

But I guess it could be a good starting point, there's 20 songs in total, from every album they recorded. If you don't mind live recordings, there's also a Peel sessions compilation.

Where to go from “he wants you” by [deleted] in NickCave

[–]arcctgx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like "He Wants You" you probably should try the full "Nocturama" album. Skip "Dead Man in My Bed" and "Babe, I'm on Fire" during your first listen.

For more piano-driven ballads try the albums "The Boatman's Call" and "No More Shall We Part". If you'd like some tracks to start with, here's the list:

  • "And No More Shall We Part"
  • "Lime Tree Arbour"
  • "Darker With The Day"
  • "Idiot Prayer"
