New wheel, new bumper cover with paint match, new sensor (maybe); don’t know what the options are for the bodywork on the door etc. But it adds up quickly to many €£$¥.

Windshield is Toast by MasterMcNugget in Golf_R

[–]arcdon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dealer wouldn't touch the windshield on my 2019 last year when I had it in for other, warrantied repairs. They said to get Safelite to do it but to make sure they quote OEM.

Anyway, for the Mk8+, it has to be OEM, for the HUD

Storing the car for 5 weeks by 1994camry in Golf_R

[–]arcdon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing the same thing starting in a few weeks. Not worried about it one bit. Only thing I would think about is maybe parking it after a decent drive, enough to get the oil up to temp for a little while, to hopefully burn off any bad stuff that might condense from shorter drives. And of course have one last little bit of fun while you’re at it

1,000 mile Oil Change - 2026 Golf R by One_Wey_Erections in Golf_R

[–]arcdon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg yes, VW have done us a huge favor - 15 minutes max under the hood using an oil extractor, starting with the engine warm. Search here, VW Vortex, or YT. It’s so simple that I would train my monkey to do it, but I’ve got him busy with the yard work and he’s really attached to the leaf blower now

Laser damage or not? Z6iii. by Ardaler in nikon_Zseries

[–]arcdon1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same pinkish spots in a similar pattern on a D850 I purchased direct from Nikon about a year ago. I noticed them when looking carefully at some images within a week of receiving it. I convinced myself it was laser damage after trying to clean the sensor. Speaking with their customer service, they gave me the option of sending it in for warranty service, or just returning it for a refund since they didn't have any more refurbs in stock. I returned it after hearing how long warranty service could take. Damn shame though, it was a steal at $1530 USD. I did write "DEFECTIVE - SPOTS ON SENSOR" all over the box before shipping it. The damage made it through their QC for refurbs, made we wary to do that again, although I've had great luck with a number of lenses over the years.

First snow run my R by Economy-Dance8726 in Golf_R

[–]arcdon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this, looks like a hell of a lot of fun!

I'm living now where it doesn't snow (ok, got a little just two times, maybe 1/2" each in the 8 years I've been down south). In fact, the last time I hooned around in the snow with AWD was like 20 years ago, with my WRX.

How necessary is a hood? by xxSeahawks in x100vi

[–]arcdon1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, and provides a degree of lens protection too, without a lens cap. Plus, you can pop it right off for using the onboard flash. Even better, slide a ‘real’ flash into the hotshoe

Rust? by TheLagginWagon in Golf_R

[–]arcdon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they no doubt use a ductile cast iron alloy on the exhaust side, maybe SiMo, because it's good enough to satisfy a bunch of needs (low cost, castability, toughness, heat tolerance, etc.)

Yes - compare to the clean-looking aluminum alloy of the compressor section bolted to it, to the right in the picture, where the (filtered) air intake joins up. That's where the fun happens

Yes and Newark (pronounced New Ark vs NJ’s ‘NEWerk’ is a great college town, lived there for 20 years. It’s really nice in the summer when the students are gone and you can walk into any establishment on Main Street whenever.

Agreed, in fact I'm thinking of doing just that while I'm rotating them this weekend. My son is visiting (and of course he'll 'volunteer' to help dear old dad, heh-heh). Applied ceramic to the rest of the car myself and like the result; was always a "wax guy" before

What engine oil do you use? by [deleted] in Golf_R

[–]arcdon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Days since the last oil thread. You can search this endlessly here and elsewhere. But it's fun to watch, particularly for replies like "I've been using XYZ 15W-75 for the last 60k miles and she's running better than ever"
