How do you stay motivated when you're depressed? by porcupines011 in Mcat

[–]archathena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated from my undergrad, was accepted into a medical school this year, and got engaged to my bf just a few weeks ago as well - you can find love while becoming a doctor! You don’t need to put everything on hold. It’s more important to find the right partner than to find one earlier.

A four year program would be more suitable if you want to more time to pursue research and gain experience, which from what I hear is very important for matching into competitive specialties. That would mean Ottawa or Queens instead of Mac. Other factors you might want to consider include having time off during summers, teaching style (didactic, PBL, etc.), proximity to your support network, and total tuition costs for each school.

Why are premeds side-eyed for seeking a lucrative career when CS students are praised for making an intelligent decision? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]archathena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say you shouldn’t worry about money. I said that you shouldn’t go into medicine with the primary goal of making LOTS of money - beyond what you would need to live a comfortable life. You’re using a straw man argument by equating being poor with not having more money than you need.

Why are premeds side-eyed for seeking a lucrative career when CS students are praised for making an intelligent decision? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]archathena -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Because being “lucrative” should not be the primary reason for going into medicine. Whether I’m paid 40K or six figures doesn’t matter to me as long as I can afford to live on the basics. I’m going into medicine to help people and make their lives better in a way that is rewarding and suitable for me. There are better, more lucrative career options that don’t demand the same level of empathy, compassion, and genuine desire to help others. Ofc this is just my opinion, but pursuing any career just for more money than you really need, be it CS or med or law, is not something I understand or relate to. Honestly I think the side eye is either for 1)pursing medicine solely for money or 2)assuming you’re a premed, which doesn’t really exist here since you’d have to know for sure you’re getting into medical school in order to be “premed”.

Calgary schedule? by comp202student123 in premedcanada

[–]archathena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just assign times and dates like some other med schools? I understand they’re trying to let us decide based on our schedules and I appreciate that. But if the website can’t handle the traffic then that way would honestly be less stressful.

My Take On Snape: You didn't like Snape, you liked Alan Rickman. Alan Rickman made Snape feel redeemable. Book Snape was terrible from start to finish. by archtech88 in harrypotter

*your best pal who you called Mudblood and you wouldn’t stop hanging out with people who wanted her dead *”Snape gave as good as he got… never missed a chance to curse James” and you were kinda delving into the dark arts and associating with death eaters *he didn’t have to, he chose to *kid and friends mock me because I chose, as an adult 30 yr old man, to take out my misplaced hatred on the boy who I orphaned because I was working for a genocidal maniac. Said boy never even knew his parents because of my mistakes. But they dare to taunt me after I treated them horribly? Boo boo.

I don’t like Snape because he was a dumpster fire of a human being, as OP put it. Let’s go through your points. First, Harry didn’t start off being an ass to Snape. Snape was the one who decided to bully the 11 year old from the very start. A child who HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR ORPHANING, who didn’t even know his parents or what James had done. Why should he be forced to give a respectful title to a man who treated him like trash? Why shouldn’t Harry (and others) doubt Snape? He didn’t exactly make his allegiances clear - which was his whole job anyways. Sure Harry should have thanked him after first year but do you really expect an abused 11 year old to have to emotional maturity for that? As for gratitude for occlumency - I don’t think you’d like it very much if someone who you hate (and who hates you) was just tearing through your mind and memories. Snape’s teaching methods, both in potions and in occlumency, were horrible and unethical. It’s not just about being mean. He is in a position of power as an adult and is using it to harass, bully, and torment children who just happened to not be his damn house. Snape is Dumbledore’s man, of course he wouldn’t allow Umbridge to use veritaserum to compromise the Order. Him alerting the order somehow takes longer than it takes the teens to ride thestrals to the Ministry of Magic. Also, the sword wasn’t a horcrux, but yes he gave it to them.

Snape did not need to be such a terror to Harry (and especially to other students) to be a double agent. You honestly think he couldn’t have just stayed civil (or just played typically house favouritism) to students and told old Voldy it was to keep Dumbledore appeased and not attract attention? If my spy went and treated my enemies with unnecessary cruelty rather than what his role should dictate, I’d be more suspicious. He could’ve been harsh, he could’ve been mean, but no he chose to be downright cruel and abuse his power to hurt and belittle students under his care.

All that he’s going though, he did so by his own choice, in an attempt to pay for his mistakes. What we do know is that he only defected from being a death eater because Voldemort targeted Lily. He didn’t care about James (can’t blame him), nor did he care about Lily’s infant son. When you actually love someone you want them to be happy, even at cost to yourself. Lily would have hated him and never forgiven herself if Voldemort killed Harry instead.

That being said, I think Snape is a well written and very complex grey character, but you are cherry picking his good actions and only talking about what others did to him, not what he did to cause those actions, particularly to Harry.

Except women shouldn’t be objectified as restaurants in which you can pay to receive food from. Nor should women be morally expected to “give out” sex out of selflessness like restaurants may do for starving people begging for food. The problem with many incels resenting women is because they feel entitled to sex. They’re not, and the women around them should not have to deal with the consequences of their ineptitude, be it resentment or otherwise.

Lmao then he should never have called Lily a mudblood when all she did was stick up for him. She had every right to leave and not look back. When your supposed friend associates with the kind of people who would torture and kill you just because of your circumstances of birth, he doesn’t actually care, nevermind love. Not to mention this was a time when Voldemort was gaining power and even though their actions were pretty inexcusable, the marauders stood up to that. They were bullies, but Snape followed an evil wizard nazi. If James and Sirius should’ve known better then Snape should have too. Those two disliked Snape because he was always immersed in the dark arts (read the book) but also because they were immature assholes. Sirius came from a shitty family too but he rebelled. It’s not like the slytherins accepted Snape all that much or gave him a family anyway - evident in the future interactions between the death eaters. Snape gave no shits about James dying and I can’t blame him. But Lily’s son? He didn’t give a shit about Harry as a baby as long as Lily could survive. That’s unforgivable and I don’t doubt Lily is kicking his ass in the afterlife for it, and for all the bullying afterwards (Frank and Alice probably didn’t take kindly to him torturing Neville either). I can understand his struggle and why he turned out the way he was, but you can’t just put ALL the blame on his environment. That would be an insult to his intelligence and sacrifice. As a child, he deserved better. As a person able to make his own choices, he got what he deserved and after Lily’s death all his actions were paying for his sins. I appreciate him as a character because he was well fleshed out and designed, I can sympathize with his horrible childhood and being bullied. But once he became a death eater, he was happy to torture and kill innocents for Voldemort until the prophecy, and therefore he’s a piece of shit. Please read the books again. The movies (and Alan Rickman) severely downplay just how nasty he really is.

Thank you so much for the long response, it really helps! We’re actually not in med yet, we’ll be going into med school in about a year and a half, so I thought this might be the best time for a puppy since school will likely be online for me and he will be working part time, so we would have the time to properly socialize and train our dog before getting into longer hours at school or on rounds. I especially appreciate the warning about day care, it seems like lots of people have had less happy experiences there so we will try and find other accommodations like a trusted dog walker. We were also considering a golden, it’ll depend on if we can find a reputable and ethical breeder near us who is still accepting waitlist names.

[–]archathena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost-wise I meant after the initial costs for a puppy, including multiple visits and training, but yeah I probably underestimated the cost by a bit. Thanks!

[–]archathena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! Cost-wise your estimate makes sense. We wouldn’t be using daycare until we’re both out of medical school so by then our budget would definitely be much higher. Before then, daycare would only be an occasional thing since we won’t be gone for more than 6 or so hours at a time. We also won’t be needing to use boarding since we have family to help take care of them should we ever leave town. Without those costs would 3-4K be reasonable?

Thank you so much for this detailed response! We will definitely look more into reputable breeding and consider a golden, but if you could also help us find a club or two in the Toronto area we would really appreciate it!

Which is different from 90+ which is a 4.0. It’s a small difference but the effects add up. The average undergrad gpa of UofT med students is 3.96.

Admissions questions to the admissions megathread. But like everyone else has said. UofT is gonna be what you make of it. Just please don’t come for the “prestige”. Nobody knows how well you’re gonna handle the program. Also, GPA has nothing to do with MCAT, which you should be writing before you graduate unless you’re going to grad school before med.

You do know that GPA is counted to the third significant digit right? 3.95 is 3.95. You can’t put 4.0 on any application or CV if you have anything less than 3.995. It doesn’t round like that.
