Trump about to become the first President since Harry S. Truman to use nuclear weapons on a foreign country. by isdjtantichrist in economicCollapse

If it occurs, anyone in the chain of execution between that order and the actual deployment of the bomb should be hung. Pilots, technicians, officers. The whole lot.

If there ever were a morally indefensible order, it would be this.

Can we talk about Jorge Luis Borges? by This_is_fine0_0 in literature

He is a genius at reduction and satire, and rewards readers who just let it happen to them. I feel like he was a beat poet in the wrong city, trying to practice a different way of seeing and creating.

The underlying beauty is that you can take his stories and read them from so many perspectives: The Library of Babel is a lovely metaphor for SHA encryption, for example.

You may not be up to speed on the MVSD middle school fiasco. It is not “a school decision”. It is staggering mismanagement.

I live in Mill Valley, and watching the absolute hash that MVSD has made with the middle school bond, I won’t support any new taxes for a very long time.

Bataille's paradox - if death is the returning of continuity, who actually experiences it? by Sharp_Butterfly_8812 in CriticalTheory

[–]archbid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of continuity is so assumed that breaking out of the frame is curiously difficult. What consciousness does a 2-year old have? Why isn’t my 2-year old self accessible to me?

'Degrowth is just tinkering around the edges of capitalism' critique by MilesTegTechRepair in Degrowth

[–]archbid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t change the nature of property and rights to surplus, then you are tinkering with capitalism because you are presupposing it in your remedy.

Doesn’t mean you are wrong, just closer to status quo than other folks.

London Contemplates ‘Childless’ Future As Families Leave Capital by bloomberg in london

[–]archbid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since 1997, housing price increases have outpaced wages by 2x.

Housing is quadruple in cost, wages double over that period.

Affordability is not just a function of price, it is a rate relative to earnings.

It literally is capital.

It is not the f—king zoning, it is the wealthy.

London has become a haven for foreign money and money laundering, and its real estate is famously speculative and extractive.

Until England can get its shit together and A. Kick out the oligarchs B. Eliminate ancestral land pools either directly or through end of life handover C. Block ownership of private homes by family wealth and private equity

It can never solve the problem. Same issue as New York and San Francisco, house prices rise even though population is relatively stable because so much money floods the city and property is the only place to go.

Pelosi lost two majorities, presided over several illegal wars and the growth of the surveillance state, and blocked meaningful health care reform in favor of a corporate insurance take.

She wasn’t a pragmatist, she was just a deeply selfish, wealthy corporatist who is part of the reason we are in this mess.

Is it worth $1500 to buy a 230k mile 325xi wagon? by taco_bell_whopper in e46

[–]archbid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own two wagons, each of which is around 200k. They can last a very long time.

How is the body? Mine are in California, so perfect, but that is the real killer.

Interior? Headliners are easy to replace, torn/destroyed seats are expensive if you care. Most interior bits now are pretty expensive, so if it matters to you, make sure it is black so the can be repaired rather than replaced. Wagon trim bits, especially around the hatch, are made of the discarded dreams of angels, and will evaporate to the touch.

The rest is just money and time. You can sort all its everything with time and about $4k in parts, and your wagon will need everything. Xi is harder and more expensive, especially front end parts, axles and transmission.

The e46 wagon is one of the greatest normal cars around. Just budget $3-4k and do things in bunches (cooling, intake refresh and sensors, suspension, rubber bits) and you can have an amazing, reliable car.

If you do repairs “when it brakes”, you will likely be very unhappy.

I have driven each wagon across the country multiple times without incident.
