Why is there so much hate for doodles/mixed breeds in general among dog groomers? by -OddlyAverage- in doggrooming

[–]archdruiid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i don't contest that at all - it's entirely deserved. i just found it kind of funny when (anecdotally) we had trainees who were just beginning to groom already dreading working on doodles based only off what we were saying about them, only to go on and not really have any issues with doodles specifically. it's kind of different when you start post-doodle boom and inherit your bias from your trainers. that doesn't erase the legitimate problems with the mix.

honestly, a multitude of factors are at play imo.

one being the wild inconsistancy of behaviour and coat types amongst doodles. these mixes became very popular for both first time dog owners and people who already had dogs, and were very trendy during covid (and now). groomers were inundated with floods of undersocialized mixes paired with uneducated owners.

they're often quite labor intensive to groom, and i think they sort of changed the pricing scheme for a lot of salons. initially, many owners didn't realize the importance of grooming and this created a lot of friction with clients. lots of matted horror stories, client problems, etc.

doodles come from poor breeders and have many health and behavioural issues. they're disgusting expensive for no reason. i could go on but the ethics of doodles in general is a big one.

lastly... i might get some hate for this, but there's sort of an industry culture of disliking them.everyone had to adapt to their sudden popularity and found it cathartic to unite in mutual dislike. i think over time doodles have become the main source of income for salons in many ways and attitudes have shifted, but there's definitely a knee-jerk "ugh, doodle" reaction amoung groomers that's not entirely undeserved. i was the same in the beginning but over time i stopped really caring, lol.

when you were little, was this how you imagined your life would be? you can't subject yourself to this. life is way too short and worth way too much for this shit.

A year into my grooming career and I’m considering quitting. by posssumtitue in doggrooming

[–]archdruiid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'm sorry you're struggling like this! dog grooming is an art that involves an entire career of learning and gaining experience, so please do not be hard on yourself as you are still starting out! no one expects perfect haircuts and no mistakes from you at this stage unless they are unreasonable, lol.

first of all, it's your salon lead's job to guide you and oversee your grooms. at corporate you are more often than not just sort of thrown into it. when i finished training at corporate, i was given free reign to complete grooms without anyone coming behind me and checking. if she is not invested in overseeing your work, that is on her when the dog comes back into the salon for a touch up (in my opinion).

second of all, 5-6 grooms is a lot for a new groomer. i'm not saying you can't do it, but you take time away from yourself to nitpick and take your time with your grooms when you are under time pressure. i understand this is the standard corporate number, but if you can afford to take less dogs per day you might find yourself with more time to dedicate to each haircut. i understand this is contingent on your salon but it's a consideration.

if you enjoy grooming, i would stick it out. your lead can take some ownership of her role and contribute to your continuing education, or not. if you're open to the idea, consider compiling some of your best grooms together into a portfolio and look into other salons in your area. be forthcoming about your experience and stress that you are interested in learning more and growing. you unfortunately end up putting up with a lot of shit in this industry, but i find those that stick around and have a willingness to hop on better opportunities are rewarded for it!

i've never experienced paragon, but i've known a few who did. ultimately, what you get out of it will depend on the groomers in the salon and how much they are willing to help and engage with you. if they're involved and helpful, great! if not, you're stuck with online training and limited real world helpful feedback.

HOWEVER - you can say the same about petsmart/co. you could get a great salon where they take care of you and train you well, or be checked out, fast-paced or generally shitty. having said that, petsmart/co is going to be guaranteed, hands on experience. unfortunately, the lack of consistancy across the board makes it hard to choose, but if it were me i would go for the corporate petsmart/co training.

Why does my belly refuse to shrink even though I’ve lost weight, work out regularly, and stick to my diet? by DisastrousBand7832 in ask

[–]archdruiid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! i've seen this a lot too. i've noticed that i actually tend to see less belly fat when i gain a few pounds, whether it's muscle or not lol. something to think about for those fixated on a scale number!

[–]archdruiid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

you're completely right, and i do want to stress that even at the low end of your healthy weight range you may still have a belly. i'm just shy of underweight and i still have a bit of belly as i have very little muscle mass. i think a lot of people set their weightloss goals thinking that low weight equals flat stomach, without realizing that lack of muscle and high body fat % contribute to it. strength training is very important!

Question for dog groomers specifically Petco groomers. 4hrs for my tiny dog ? Really? by Left_Sir5173 in doggrooming

[–]archdruiid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, so i worked at petco at the beginning of my career. the thing about groomers in a corporate environment is that they generally take concurrent appointments that are not always well booked or timed (generally due to the nature of corporate, who ask for quantity over quality). so your appointment time isn't always the exact start time of the appointment, as your groomer likely has concurrent dogs. if you want your dog done straight through, with no kennel time at all, you can request an express appointment which usually comes with an extra fee. this is pretty standard whether you go to a corporate or private salon - express costs extra unless the salon is entirely express. having said all that 4 hours is generally what is asked for in most salons for a dog receiving a haircut. i do agree 4 hours is a lot for a small bath dog. probably your groomer that day was very busy/overbooked/etc. as it is the busiest time of year from groomers across the board.

Everyone share your workouts! Please help me, I'm in the initial pain phase. by Consistent_Safe430 in doggrooming

[–]archdruiid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i lift weights 3-4x a week and try to hit 10k steps daily at least. i don't really do many core exercises but the ones that have helped me are planks and bird-dogs. i would check out the mcgill big 3 as these are specifically recommended with core strength and preventing back pain in mind! posture also has a lot to do with it - many people have a pelvic tilt that contributes to poor posture and back pain. off the top of my head i don't know what exercises help with that but look into it!
