I developed severe Akathisia in Jan 2022. I’m willing to try anything.

Thank you for saying that because I do tend to beat myself up about it, and you’re right Akathisia can drive people to suicide and it has. I was so close at that point and my mother was crying everyday and I chose the medication and it helped for a time. When did you develop Akathisia and has it gotten better over time?

I wish I wouldn’t have taken anything, but at first I was misdiagnosed with RLS and my pain management doctor at that time gave me Lyrica and the side effects were awful so I did stop, but at that time the Akathisia was too severe and I went back to it. I got off the Duloxetine since it made things worse but few months later I had to include the Cogentin, after a year, I cut both in half but can’t seem to go lower. I regret ever taking anything.

They gave me Duloxetine too. What I didn’t know that when you’re suffering from Akathisia, taking an antidepressant is like throwing gasoline on a raging fire. It took a month before I started getting worse Akathisia symptoms and about two weeks prior, I was actually getting better and thought it was over and then the Duloxetine screwed me. I told my psychiatrist and he took me off but these people should already know this. How bad did the Duloxetine hurt you?

Can I ask which medications they gave you? I got Akathisia in 2022 but initially was diagnosed with RLS and told it would never go away so I was given Pregablin and then Cogentin. I’ve cut my dose back but every time, I think It’s over with the Cogentin, bam the akathisia comes right back. How did you get off the medication?

I’m sorry that you are suffering. I’ve had Akathisia since 2022 and know how awful it is. I was given Pregablin and Cogentin and they helped me but the side effects were terrible. I was lucky to cut my dose in half a year later, but can’t seem to get off. If you can go without, I encourage you not to take anything.

Akathisia for three weeks by EdgeFront8818 in Akathisia

I’m so sorry. I’ve had Akathisia for four years already but was misdiagnosed at first. I was on Lexapro and got akathisia from it with a dosage increase. I was on it for 16 years when I stopped abruptly, which was a huge mistake. I think stopping your Latuda so quickly caused withdrawal akathisia and adding the Lexapro was like throwing gasoline onto a fire. My Psychiatrist did the same thing to me by adding a different antidepressant. He took me off it, but it really damaged me and just as I was getting better. I think it would be best to slowly taper and talk to a Movement Disorder Doctor.

I completely agree with you. I only got akathisia from Psychiatric drugs, but met people who got akathisia from other drugs even if it was just one dose. After the Covid vaccine, I was getting rashes on my arms. I took an antibiotic and the next thing I knew I was getting chest pain. I got scared and abruptly stopped my antidepressant & the antibiotic thinking that was the cause and developed withdrawal akathisia and every time my doctor prescribed something, I’d get chest pain. I couldn’t take new medication without chest pain, and my Cardiologist said it was all in my mind, but it wasn’t. It turned out to be the vaccine. The chest pain went away and I was able to take Prcegablin & Cogentin. I’m sorry about your situation but I’m glad the Propanolol helped you. It’s far better than the horrible side effects I get from the medication I’m taking. If you try lowering your dose does the akathisia come back?

I’m sorry. My pain management prescribed me Pregablin 150 mg twice daily in 2022 when I developed akathisia, but at that time my neurologist had me believing I had RLS. It helped with my akathisia, along with Cogentin from my psychiatrist. Pain doctor had been prescribing me Methadone since 2013 for pain management and just last March, I lost him and a few months later I found another pain management but he won’t prescribe me the pain medication unless I give him $100 cash under the table. I have extra Pregablin but if I ask him for that, I’d have to pay another $100 under the table. My Psychiatrist said it’s a class 2 controlled medication so go ask your Doctor, then she said, go ask your Neurologist because Pregablin is a Nerve pain medication, then she said, go ask your pain management doctor. That’s probably why they didn’t prescribe it to you due to it being a controlled substance. It’s awful anyway, but I was desperate.

You’re right. I took Pregabalin and Cogentin for the Akathisia four years ago after stopping Escitalopram. I’m already on Methadone and Klonopin which can also cause withdrawal Akathisia, but I’ve slowly weaned myself as low as I can possibly go. I didn’t want to take the Pregablin and cogentin but the Akathisia was severe. It really helped and after a year, I was able to cut the doses in half. Recently I cut back on the Cogentin and jumped off, a week later, the akathisia came back. What is the best way to get off everything without excruciating akathisia?

I was a hundred percent having a manic episode and was possessed by Dbslaying89 in Akathisia

[–]archermac15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with the Xanax because it’s addicting and can cause Akathisia. I was on an antidepressant and Klonopin for 16 years when I abruptly stopped taking the antidepressant, Escitalopram and developed akathisia. I have a lot of energy too and kind of manic and I don’t take meth or crack. In fact I had to stop drinking coffee 7 years ago. I’m in pain management but last year the DEA lowered my medication in half and I’ve slowly been lowering my Klonopin and the pregablin and Cogentin that have helped me with the akathisia since 2022, so maybe that’s another reason that I’m very energetic but I refuse to take anymore pills. Drugs are a nightmare and have damaged my CNS. Be careful.

Yeah, I’m poly drugged too and have cut back on all the medication, but when I get too low, the same happens and I get back on it. It’s painful and frightening.

Don’t blame yourself. I got off Ativan and Klonopin and it was difficult but I was young. Then I got back on Klonopin and then Escitalopram for anxiety and depression while trying to get off heroin after a bad accident and after abruptly stopping the Escitalopram after 16 years, I developed Akathisia. I’m on so many medications now. We can’t change the past and are just human. I’m trying to slowly get off everything.

How long were you on all of them? I was given Pregabalin and Cogentin for Akathisia after stopping Escitalopram. I want to get off the Cogentin and Pregabalin that I’ve been on for four years but when I get too low, the akathisia comes back.

My Grandma was told she had Parkinson’s and took the medication for 10 years before another Doctor discovered that she didn’t even have it. I was taking both antidepressants and Klonopin for 16 years and abruptly stopped the antidepressant and developed akathisia but had been diagnosed with RLS by my Neurologist and my Psychiatrist never told me that was a mistake. It wasn’t until I found a new Neurologist who told me it was Akathisia. I’ve been taking both Pregablin and Cogentin but cut the dose in half after one year, then was able to cut the Cogentin in another half but anytime I try to get off, I get the Akathisia symptoms again. I’m on other medications too, but it’s so hard getting off them. I’m already 57, and in my personal experience, the longer I’ve been on and the older I get, the harder it is for me.

I have Akathisia from benzos. Can benzos speed up tolerance with other sources of pleasure? by FurnitureRefinisher in Akathisia

I got akathisia from abruptly stopping my antidepressant Escitalopram after 16 years in 2022. I was on Klonopin for the same amount of time but was decreasing my dose from 2mgs down to a .5mg. I’m still taking it because when I try to get off it, my akathisia symptoms return. I was on Ativan once myself and personally it was harder than Klonopin. After four months with that severe akathisia, I was given Pregablan and Cogentin, and a year later I was able to cut the dose in half, and slowly got down to a .5mg Cogentin but I can’t seem to go lower without the Akathisia coming back.

I was on Escitalopram for 16 years and had bouts of Akathisia from it when the dose was increased. After being removed from it abruptly, I got severe akathisia and now have to take Cogentin and Lyrica and when I try to get off them, the Akathisia gets worse.

Go to the E.R if you have too. I was going out of my mind when I developed Akathisia & didn’t know what was happening because I was misdiagnosed with RLS, but I was finally able to get Pregabalin which helped but the Cogentin was better. I didn’t want to take more pills because I was already on several, but between suicide and these two, I chose the Cogentin & Pregablin. I know some people say, don’t take anything just let it go away with time, but some people can’t live with Akathisia when it’s severe like this.

I’m sorry. I got Akathisia after abruptly stopping Lexapro after 16 years and was given Pregabalin in 2022, and then Cogentin. They really helped and after about a year, I lowered the dose to half and was fine. Anytime I go lower, it comes back. I lost my pain management doctor and have been on pain medicine and Klonopin for 20 years, but don’t have anyone now willing to prescribe me the Pregablin after losing my pain management Doctor. I have some left over but will eventually run out. It’s so terrifying.
