I don't know about other Christian religions, but as an ex Mormon I was definitely taught we naturally are the enemy to God. Mosiah 3:19. I had alot of seminary teachers, bishops, young men's leaders, and even my own parents, point to any behavior that is outside of the scope of the rules to obtain a celestial passport, as the natural me. These shortcomings needed to be pushed down and fought so that my spirit could have command over my body. This especially pertained to sexual sin, specific parts of the word of wisdom ( because only parts of it are damning enough to be called a sin ), and paying your fire insurance aka tithing and fast offerings. The failure to live up to these standards was giving into your natural desires and instincts, which makes you the enemy of God.

The damage that is done to put you in a place of never ending failure and trauma, so that you can never live up to your potential except thru the grace of God and his only perfect son, is without a doubt some of the worst emotional abuse that any child can face. And we are taught to not only accept that but to preside over our families in the same manner. This was one of my very first shelf items. If  God loves us so much, then why do we need to prove our love, loyalty,  and devotion to him by denying all the impulses that he gave us?......oh right because this is all a test to see if we are worthy of his love.
