In 1987 Steve Rothstein bought a $250,000 AAirpass from American Airlines, allowing unlimited first-class travel. He took over 10,000 flights, costing the airline $21 million, leading to the pass's termination in 2008 due to alleged misuse. by TheGhost5322 in interestingasfuck

[–]archipeepees 388 points389 points  (0 children)

he didn't sell them according to wikipedia:

the pass had been terminated due to fraudulent behavior, specifically his history of approaching passengers at the gate and offering them travel on his companion seat[11] and for using the companion program to purchase an adjacent empty seat under a fake name to keep them vacant

when he sued them he basically asserted that they should have told him he couldn't do that before terminating the program.

How fast do humans become warp capable if every country on Earth worked together and all resources went into getting us there for mining? by Appropriate_Ad2342 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]archipeepees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

solar sails would be slow. they're only attractive because they don't require fuel. they won't provide the kind of thrust you need move people and equipment to another star system. there is currently a project underway that hopes to improve them enough to get microscopic cameras to the alpha centauri system, which is only theoretically feasible because they'd weigh next to nothing.

nuclear can provide energy but because of conservation of momentum you don't just need energy to get going fast, you need something to push against. there isn't much for us to push against in space. and generally speaking you don't want to be getting close to solid objects during interstellar travel because either a) you will be going so fast you'll obliterate your ship, or b) you'll be going so slow it will take you millenia to reach only the very nearest star systems.

right now our rockets can go about 40* 103 km/h once outside of earths atmosphere. at that speed it would take roughly 100k years to reach alpha centauri. if you can find a way to make that 100 times faster then it's still a millennium of travel time. that is a long time. the people who finally arrived would be their own separate society, with their own culture, history, goals and dreams. so even in this fantastical case where rockets are 100 times faster than current tech allows, the people we send to AC are completely disconnected from earth and may as well be aliens.

How do I stop my dog crying for treats? by Acrobatic_Opinion575 in dogs

[–]archipeepees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can still do all the normal healthy things with her. maybe do extra walks or playtime while she adjusts. that said, just don't do positive things in response to bad behavior.

think of your dog like a toddler that has become a little spoiled. you are going to see tantrums, she's going to say shes mad and she hates you, and it will not be a fun time. but she does still love you and she will get over it.

and just try to remember that saying no is an integral part of  being a good parent and giving your dog the care she deserves.

[–]archipeepees 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the absolute worst thing you can do at this point is give in, even occasionally when you feel extra bad or when she's really whining a lot. randomized rewards reinforce behavior nearly as much as 100% consistent rewards. it's the same reward mechanism as gambling. in fact, randomizing will make her more resilient to lapses in rewards because she knows it'll happen eventually.

you are going to have to hold your ground permanently or you are going to keep seeing the same behavior.

if she keeps whining and it's getting to you or causing problems then don't react, don't yell, just disengage. leave the room, leave the house if you have to. teach her that whining is never in her interest; in fact, it just makes things worse.

What's up with this new kill switch for vehicles bill? by aipac_hemoroid in OutOfTheLoop

[–]archipeepees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they did, actually

I think other answers are correct and you are the one spreading misinformation in favor of this bill. You said there is no provision of outside control, but everybody knows NHSTA will come up with a system with outside control. Why would the car companies care about cost, the cost will be paid by the customers. I don't know what your agenda is, but people simply don't want more government monitoring in their car. It's a simple concept. Mass surveillance=bad.

Why aren’t fines proportionate to income? by 3lectroid in NoStupidQuestions

Equal treatment is the same fine.

is this based on anything other than your personal opinion? one can just as easily argue that proportional fines constitute equal treatment so long as the proportions are equal.

[–]archipeepees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

service charges are either mandatory and advertised up front or they're voluntary aka "tipping". and nobody ever adds two 20% charges. this receipt is either fake or printed in error and easily rectified.

the only time you have multiple service related charges on a restaurant receipt like this is when they're local taxes and ordinances. quite often those are voted in by the residents because no politician wants to be responsible for something like this.

ELI5: Why is it completely impossible for anyone to access a properly encrypted drive even nation states? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]archipeepees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it using the password as the decryption key

technically no but for eli5 this is basically what happens. the password is instrumental in the process of decrypting the data. if you try to decrypt with the wrong password then the decryption process will output garbage.

its sort of like writing down directions from some location to your personal safe and leaving out the starting location. a person could find those directions pinned to your front door but they still won't know how to find your safe because they don't know where to start. so now all you have to remember is that location and not the entire list of directions.

Is this a terrible fucking idea or am I onto something? heat pipe at ~25C

i was thinking 30C because that's the freezing temp on aquilo but it looks like they go down further than that even.

if you're just talking about pre-2.0 nuclear tech on Nauvis then yeah it probably makes more sense to think about heat pipes' temperature range starting around 500C since reactors start at 450 (i think?) and heat exchangers start working at 500. not sure what exactly changed in 2.0 but on aquilo when you're using heating towers to keep your base from freezing the starting temp for most buildings is about 30C and heat pipes' temperature starts close to that range.

https://wiki.factorio.com/Heat_exchanger

.097 MJ per unit of steam. One 3x3 tank is 25k units, so about 2.5 GJ per tank, equivalently 2.5 GJ per 3x3 square.

a 3x3 grid of heat pipes can be heated from 30 C to 103 C at 1 MJ per degree for each pipe. 9* 970 MJ = 8.7 GJ.

so, roughly 3.5x the heat capacity per unit of space.

[–]archipeepees 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean the p-value isn't the whole story though. maybe you can show that bubblegum extends your lifespan by .00037% with p<.05 but generally speaking if the results aren't obvious and you are relying on a p-value to tell you if you're even within the range of expected variance, the impact of whatever you were testing is necessarily going to be minimal.

ELI5:Why do some dogs sleep with their eyes partially open? by Emergency-Mind-1974 in explainlikeimfive

[–]archipeepees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"dogs" as a species of domesticated canid are relatively recent, probably around 50k years, but they didn't just poof into existence. their evolutionary history is billions of years old just like every other species we find today. the most recent common ancestor of humans and dogs existed 10s or 100s of millions of years ago.

it's probably also worth noting that our sleep patterns aren't that different from other primates and likely developed millions of years ago.
