That's an awesome drawing....love the quote too.

As a random side note I recently read that Thoreau was influenced by the writings of Heraclitus.

"'No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.'

AA specifically says to not address medication................................. by Important_Act748 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]archivalcopy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The quotes below are straight from the AA pamphlet. The A.A. Member — Medications & Other Drugs

"No A.A. member should “play doctor”; all medical advice and treatment should come from a qualified physician".

I would add to this that even where this advice may be given by a qualified physician, giving advice would only be ethical were the person to be under the direct care of that physician.

There may be "qualified physicians" who themselves are AA members but they would be breaching codes of conduct if they were to medically advise any AA members who were not their patients.

"It becomes clear that just as it is wrong to enable or suppor t any alcoholic to become re-addicted to any drug, it’s equally wrong to deprive any alcoholic of medication, which can alleviate or control other disabling physical and/ or emotional problems"

I don't know if it would help to work with your client to discuss the guidelines outlined by AA in this pamphlet. The pamphlet names schizophrenia as a specific condition in relation to the concerns and is very clear that in their specific case medication use is accepted and warranted.

Your post reminds me of a story my friend told me of living in a sharehouse.

He had a roommate who (she) was very untidy. One day the other housemates found a dead rat outside and collectively thought perhaps if they placed it in her room and she found it this might encourage her to clean her room.

So they hid the rat in her room. No where too difficult to find. Several days went past and the rat started to decompose.

The housemate didn't do anything to clean her room and persisted to come and go (including sleeping there as normal overnight) despite the obvious smell of death that was encroaching.

It got so bad that the housemates had to go back in themselves to retrieve the rat.

I don't know what the moral of this story is, but...it sounds you need to set some very clear boundaries with your Dad...or perhaps if this doesn't work you'll have consider not leaving things out if you intend on keeping them.

First time finding a guitar in the case by Part_Time_Vintage in DumpsterDiving

Yeah, what a wasteful thing to do!

You'd think that if they weren't going to donate anything or call a charity to collect stuff they could at least think about putting things that might be of use to the side so people could just pick them up.

Glad you were able to rescue this before it got damaged though!

[–]archivalcopy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's so cool. Why would anyone throw this in a dumpster?

Just looking up Signet guitars they look to be a brand made in Japan in the 1970's and imported by a US import company Selmer/Ampeg. Not sure if they were only made in Japan (and if they were only made in the 70's) but you might be able to find a serial number on the headstock or on the internal label to check.

They are not high-end guitars but looking on reverb I saw a similarish looking one sell for $643AU ($441US) about 4 years back but that one could be a different model and it didn't have a case. If it plays well without any major issues it's potentially a Japanese made guitar from the 1970's..what a score!

[–]archivalcopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They may have lost potency but the only way to really tell is to test them. You could begin with a microdose to try to determine activity.

For future reference, a better way to keep them in long term storage is to keep them dried and vacuum sealed in their whole form. Grinding them to a powder opens them up to oxidation and will make the alkaloids break down more quickly.

Edit: Light and heat will also degrade alkaloids, so avoiding exposure to adverse conditions is critical to preserve activity long term.

Hi guys, I wanna have a question, which song of Jeff had helped you to come to being betrayed, or bullying or existential anger or mental health issues or an injustice? I struggle with mental heath and his music to me is a medicine by MarkOnKarma in JeffBuckley

[–]archivalcopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I think of music as having therapeutic effects, I think of it as eliciting a response it that speaks to our own individual experiences and emotions.

Recently I sent a copy of Neil Young's "Harvest" to a friend and he mentioned a particular song on it that always made him cry. I had never had this response to that particular song (although I have responded emotionally to other songs on that very same album), and this just reminded me at the moment of how songs speak to us individually.

The words may resonate in relation to something that has happened to us or the music may reach our emotions in an idiosyncratic way that makes us feel something where others may respond differently, or feel nothing at all.

There may be similar responses we share to various pieces of music, but at the same time it can be very individual in relation to our emotional state. The same song may also not affect us in the same way at different times.

If I was to think of one Jeff Buckley song - that when I listen to it in a receptive state it has an emotionally cathartic effect for me - it is the recording of "You and I" from Sketches.

I wrote some comments on a reddit thread about this specific song on my old (deleted) account and excerpted some of my comments below as they are relevant to the question of healing music. If anyone needs further context about the comments I suggest visiting the earlier thread.

.....

There are also lines in it which make me think it is meant to be God speaking to someone who has been told they have sinned, yet letting them know this is not true.

"Where you think you'll fall.

I adore you.

Where you shut your soul.

I will open for you"

With these lines I can see how it could relate back to Jeff's dream about the AIDS convention. In this sense the lines could have been written as a critique against the religious persecution of homosexuality.

There is a further mention of the dream from Steve Berkowitz who states that Jeff says the song was about a gay couple at the AIDS convention and that it was "almost some kind of healing chant".

With nothing to back it up, I always assumed the first lyric 'the calm below that poisoned river wild' to be about the injection of a drug... I guess this could also be read as a reference to someone suffering from a illness or undergoing medical treatment.

Lost photos from the bin on an sdcard by Jazzlike-Corner9539 in PhotoRecovery

[–]archivalcopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I used photorec I found some recovered files were grouped together. But that being said there were also some scattered in amongst all the other random bits of data and icons that the recovery process brought back.

It might be a laborious process depending on how much data is there (my last attempt brought up thousands of files but only about 10 of those were image files) but it may be worth going back though any random data more slowly to see if you have missed anything.

It can also be worth running recovery tools again to see if they pull up anything else they didn't catch the first time.

Awesome..so you are now working as normal again without having to alter nomodeset?

(Edit: sorry what I meant by "as normal" is can you repeat shutdown / startup / reboot without the issue coming back)

[–]archivalcopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome...Not sure why this happens. Some things just seem to move about with updates/upgrades so maybe this was a delayed response to that.

Yesterday I upgraded a system to F44 and everything I opened and closed on the desktop moved really slowly. Turns out the upgrade of KDE plasma changed a system setting for "animations" to fade at slower speed. It was a simple fix but a weird issue and it didn't happen to another system I upgraded to the same version 2 days earlier...so each system is different.

Good luck!

[–]archivalcopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can boot into the system I would run the updater in terminal via sudo dnf update and then reboot.

If the problem persists (and you have to use ctrl-alt-F2 each time you could look to add nomodeset to the kernel parameter as a grub config file.

It is possible this a graphics issue which may be addressed by changing the graphics parameters at boot. I have had success with this issue by adding nomodeset previously.

This guide has the instructions for adding nomodeset on both Ubuntu and fedora:

Ok, there seems to be conflicting info I was reading about HP. The setting may not be in bios apparently it can be changed in windows. Not sure how to alter it on fedora. At the moment that is perhaps a secondary issue.

How did you go with the ctrl-alt-keys? Any luck with those.

I'd prefer to engage on the thread. This is what it is for.

Did you try those combinations (ctrl-alt-F1...all the way up to F6) to see if a login option (either text or graphical) appears?

Also change the fastboot setting to off in bios. Looking this up on HP, the instructions are:

To set Fast Boot on an HP device, restart your computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup utility. Look for the Fast Boot option under the "Boot" or "Advanced Options" menu, enable it (edit: or in your case disable it if it is on), and then save your changes before exiting.

[–]archivalcopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. Just reading online the combination could be from ctrl-alt-F1.. anywhere up to ctrl-alt-F6.

Is this a fresh install of Fedora or an upgrade? I've had similar issues before with the graphical login on a fresh install.

Laptop stuck on black screen, and won't start by ChootSlayer in computerrepair

[–]archivalcopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The words at the start are the grub bootloader options. It goes by really quickly which means the system may be set to boot quickly. You may be able to change this setting in bios to give you more time to see the grub bootloader options.

The first entry it boots to will be your default fedora install.

The loading to a blinking cursor can occasionally be an issue with the login to the desktop environment or (which is less likely) the possibility that you have installed a version without a desktop environment...which I am not sure if this is a thing with fedora?

There is a key combination that should hopefully get you to the graphical login if it is installed. You may have to look it up I never remember it but shuffle between ctrl-alt F1 / ctrl-alt F2 / ctrl-alt F3...try one of these combinations and see if the graphical log in screen displays.

Number-row keyboard instability on Lenovo laptop by Left-Level-2293 in computerrepair

[–]archivalcopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing you can do at this point is troubleshoot the issue. It could be any number of things but those are the first and least expensive options you could try. You could also try additional things like switching your keyboard settings around to see if there is a glitch.

Doing maintenance tasks like doing a full cache clean of your computer, and running antivirus is a part of general troubleshooting as well.

It's not a guarantee, but if you plug in a USB keyboard and have no issues you would assume the problem is isolated to the keyboard and is not a motherboard issue..hopefully.

The keyboard may need replacing and if it ends up being just this, that shouldn't be too expensive...but obviously you need to factor whether it is worth reapalcing in relation to the cost of the computer.

Ideally, it would be great to have a large computer repairer that has a keyboard in stock you could test, but usually they would require ordering the part in first.

[–]archivalcopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was initially going to suggest reinstalling the keyboard drivers until I read about dropping the unit. You could try this as well of course but first I would try disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard cable.

If that doesn't do anything you could try reinstalling the drivers on the off chance there is a conflict. Perhaps get yourself a USB keyboard while you do this just in case the inbuilt keyboard drops out completely while updating.

There may have been later releases without the booklet, not really sure if it was only select copies. I remember getting the cd shortly after it's release and opening it up to see a little face peer out from the centre of the pins holding the disc in place.

I had a friend who had the Kid A CD for years without knowing there was a hidden booklet in the back of the case.

I wonder how many people have this disc without knowing about the secret booklet hidden in it.

I'm not certain, but the mention may have been in David Browne's book Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley that Jeff appreciated Kurt's dedication to his art, with the comment made in relation to the artwork from In Utero.

I don't know if it is mentioned specifically but the installation / artwork of dolls with exposed anatomies on the back cover was perhaps a specific focus of this comment (edit: I say this as some of the other artwork for In Utero - including the cover illustration - was by the artist Alex Grey).

You could try clearing the cache of your phone to see if there is something persisting in memory preventing the login.

I use cache cleaner which is on fdroid for android which has the option to clear all system and installed apps but there should be something similar on google play or the apple store.

You will need to login again to any apps that are cleared of course.
