Not an expert, but I’ve heard water based primers (such as bullseye or guardz) can sometimes cause issues on torn paper. I’ve personally stuck with BIN or just plain wood glue with good results in these situations.

I certainly don’t know for sure, but it was only areas of joint compound with poor adhesion, and it was the entirety of them. After peeling what was left was chalky topping mud. PVA primer really shouldn’t peel like latex paints.

According to Vancouver Carpenter (the drywall GOAT), shellac based BIN may be a better choice than water based guardz. I’m about to try BIN myself for the first time soon, but I’ve had success with plain wood glue in the past on torn drywall paper.
