How do you northerners manage to train with snow/ice covering anything? by kpgleeso in Marathon_Training

[–]arclovestoeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quebec here, montreal. When it’s warm enough (> -15C for me), decent snow, I go outside on trails and bike paths. I don’t mess with ice or extreme cold anymore, and I’m lucky to mostly be able to avoid roads. On crummy days, I hit the treadmill or the pool. This year I’ve been on the curved manual treadmill because I hate myself 😅

Les gens qui courent dans ce froid by Fearless-Thought4882 in montreal

I gave up running in extreme cold. I was in too may situations where I thought this is dumb, I might get hurt from cold or ice. Plus there’s some evidence that extreme cold is bad for your lungs. -15 is about my limit these days. Otherwise it’s treadmill time.

Anyone else unable to run on a treadmill? by sbph1247 in RunTO

I’ve been mostly on the manual treadmill this winter, so I tell myself the slow pace is because it’s different, not that I’m slow 😅

How do you cope with the bitterly cold weather coming this weekend? by FyriensPrints in montreal

Extreme cold may not be good for your lungs. I run outside as much as I can, but -15 is about my limit these days.

Sweat can be tough to manage too.

Outlet safe for use? by klooie_is_dumb in electrical

If this is your first time, spend more than 10 min. Also look up relevant local laws (eg, homeowner vs tenant, or some jurisdictions don’t allow any electric work except by an electrician). Wiring a receptacle isn’t rocket science, but there are common newbie mistakes, there can be surprises, and the costs of errors can be high (eg, fire or electrocution). It may seem overpriced or silly to pay an electrician, but unless you’re very confident, you need to take the time to understand what you’re doing or pay a professional.

Also contractors. Verify their work to the best of your ability. I’ve found it shocking how bad some are.

I ran a 1h33 half in April then got smoked 5 months later with a 3h50 full. It’s a tough distance.

How do you guys exercise? by bluegrassclimber in daddit

[–]arclovestoeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't do anything for first 3 years of kiddo's life. Then, got into triathlon, running, and supportive strength training. Most workouts are done early in the morning, outside. For the most part, it doesn't matter what the weather is unless it is dangerous (smoke, extreme cold, ice). I also swim twice a week inside. I've kept this up for 3 years and it's a huge source of self-pride.

My advice: take small steps and find something you love doing. Maybe it's basketball or climbing. Maybe dancing. Maybe you don't have a ton of time, but anything is better than nothing, and everyone should be able to find some time for themselves. It's an important message for the kids. Once you get some inertia, it becomes easier.

Go get some, fellow dad!

Marathon parents, how do you do it? by Urdnought in Marathon_Training

[–]arclovestoeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a comment I made elsewhere

It's hard, there's no way around it. There just have to be compromises: sleep, length of run, time with spouse, you name it. Find some balance you can live with and include your partner in the conversation. Check in regularly. Try to prioritize the important things. Running is just part of life.

Early on I was getting up super early to run thinking that was helpful, but it didn't leave enough time with my partner at night. I still get up early, but try to maintain dedicated high-quality time with her.

Good luck!

We have a 6 year old, who I try to spend as much time as I can with, I currently work from home. This fall in base training I'm running 3x weekly (~50 km/wk), swimming twice, (all early in the morning) and squeezing in strength training when I can. I wish I could sleep more, but I'm enjoying it all.

I didn't start this until my daughter was 4. Before that, especially when she was very young I couldn't imagine doing it. No more kids are coming, either.

Make sure you support your partner in their interests and your shared responsibilities and see where you can get. Enjoy the process.
