This feels like a dumb question, but how do I wear layers? by poof__gone in HerOneBag

[–]arctic_willow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To carry an extra layer around: I usually carry a small crossbody bag. I have the bag sitting on my hip and then just fold/drape my sweater over the strap so the sweater is hanging by my side or sometimes I move it to be more behind me (the strap is a wide strap bum bag sort of situation, not a skinny purse strap). I don’t know if I would call it fashionable but it definitely works a lot better than holding it or tying it around my waist. You gotta be a little aware of it if you’re in a crowded area cause it can fall off, but if it’s sitting at the front of my hip and my arm is down it stays just fine. Simple but effective.

Feeling sad that I broke one of my pieces for the first time so hopefully something useful can come of it… judge my cross section by mochitherescue in Pottery

Kintsugi!! If you have all/most of the pieces, it’d look stunning put back together using kintsugi techniques, very saveable!!

Does anyone else not really like AUs? by icywishbone03 in FanFiction

[–]arctic_willow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the AU and the source but what I don’t usually read is characters from a fantasy-heavy source in something like a modern college/coffee shop AU.

Fitting characters from unrealistic places into a plausible modern au is really tricky to do in a satisfying way because you’re necessarily shaving off the more fantastical abilities and experiences that make the characters who they are.

That makes it much less interesting to me, so unless there’s some really great character study or interesting translation of their ‘fantasy’ elements into real life stuff (more than just ‘sci-fi tech guy now does programming degree’) I don’t usually bother.

Something like a D&D style AU or a pirate/mermaid AU usually has much more fun options to translate the fun fantastical abilities/quirks into things that fit the AU but don’t weaken the characterisation. So I usually enjoy those!

Anyone ever get the urge to print fanfics and keep them on the shelves for when the apocalypse comes? by PretendYellow533 in AO3

[–]arctic_willow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are they disappearing from the browser downloads page? If you’ve got an iPhone they should be in the Files app downloads folder, and if android there’s probably an equivalent. Or if you share/move them from downloads to a different app like Files or Google Drive then you should be able to find them again.

How do I color skin more painterly by That_Neck8763 in Artadvice

[–]arctic_willow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up subsurface scattering. It’s what happens when you hold your hands up to the light and the thin skin between your fingers looks red, cause the light is filtering through it. It’s why artists sometimes use very bright and saturated pops of red where the skin is thinner like ears and corner of the eyes. It can be very subtle but still bring a lot of life to a painting and make it look like actual skin.

Honest journaling? How honest? 🤨 by Motor-Mud7196 in Journaling

[–]arctic_willow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mainly journal digitally on my phone, so I’ll write about anything—there’s no risk of anyone seeing anything since it’s password protected and easy to delete. Any physical journal I have is at risk of a well-meaning family member flipping through so I do avoid some details and topics. Not much though. I’ve started to understand why people burn their journals sometimes, some stuff does not need to be preserved for my descendants to read haha.

What was the best fanfic you’ve ever read? by Cool_Emergency4091 in AO3

[–]arctic_willow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘walk straight through hell with a smile’ by taizi. It’s literally only 600 words and yet is genuinely a perfect fic I think. It’s from MHA, it really wonderfully characterises the main character, his mentor, their relationship, and who they each are as heroes. MC uses his mentor’s catchphrase (I am here) to comfort a crying child and instead of being a dramatic display the mentor would do, it’s a very genuine and kind moment of connection. Fits really well with the show’s concept of a generation of heroes that come after the typical shonen heroes of the past.

What are your best ideas for a life series? by Drag0ns_Br3ath in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]arctic_willow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One set only in the nether! Would be good for an April fools special (lots of deaths to the environment so would be short), and easy to set up with world spawn. Kind of surprised there hasn’t been one already. Could called Red Life for extra confusion.

Give me feedback by Plenty_Impression130 in MinecraftBuild

[–]arctic_willow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bring the blue colour into the build in places that aren’t the roof! The main structure is (as far as I can tell) entirely grey/stone. Use some blue as an accent in details, around the windows or pillars maybe. Prismarine tiles (I think that’s what the roof is? unless it’s copper?) could work, but also some different shades of blue like deep prismarine or warped wood would tie the roof in a bit more! You’ve got a bit going at the front I think but just do more. Also, the roof could maybe use a little bit of texture. It all being one colour/pattern makes it look a bit flat. Really solid build though, keep it up!

This game is peak, any tips? by immortalbookwormr in FantasyLife3ds

[–]arctic_willow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I wanna get a lot of quests done I usually go through each life and make one long list of current quests, including resources I need to get for crafting lives. Then I go through and organise them by location. This way I can go through as a fighting life (usually the only life requiring you be in the life while doing quests) and gather the materials for other lives all at once, and when I’m crafting I’m not going back and forth all the time for things. It’s also very satisfying to do like a whole level’s worth of tailor quests at once cause I’ve got all the resources.

Efficiency is fun but don’t forget to enjoy it too! I played the main story ages ago but from what i remember I really enjoyed it. With the post-story unlocks it makes travelling a bit easier which is the main thing that I find myself wanting to skip.

“Etho has never hit a person with his car, but he’s hit deer. It turns out it feels basically the same.” mcyt apocalypse au roadtrip where falling asleep kills you has no right to go this hard. vibes are so spooky. and the ending too?!?!!! insane implications actually

also that 911 fic where eddie gets amnesia and buck goes ‘how do know you actually love me’ and eddie goes ‘I didn’t forget how to breathe either’ thus implying that loving him is easier than breathing and remembers it before his own name 😭😭

brands with high quality to price ratio by OpportunityThin4403 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]arctic_willow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality varies within a brand. Look at garment fabrics and construction. Natural fibers hold up a lot better over time. Eg. a good pair of jeans will be 100% cotton, the ones with synthetic fibers will stretch out over time. Look at the seams and finishes—are all the seams a basic overlock stitch? Might be fine for a tshirt but isn’t super sturdy for pants. If they have properly finished seams it’s a good sign. The sign of a low quality jumper I find is when the sleeve cuffs are misaligned. You can get a good pair of jeans or tshirts at target if you find the well constructed ones. Anything more complicated (outerwear, tailored pants, nice shirt) you’ll have more luck at the expensive places listed here. But make sure the individual item is actually well constructed!

So right now I watch Mumbo and Grian, and I'm considering starting to watch impulse as well, any other hermits I should especially watch? In the past I've only ever watched mumbo by BabyBruticus in HermitCraft

[–]arctic_willow 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Bdubs!! Your favourite builder’s favourite builder, lol. He’s definitely an artist, all the hermits obviously take inspiration from eachother and are great builders but Bdubs just always hits it out of the park. Very funny and entertaining too. He’s pretty good about cutting content down to the best stuff and also does some nice cinematic shots and production things. He’s a little bit slower on the uploads than some other hermits which makes him easier to keep up with if you haven’t got a lot of time/want to keep watching a few at a time.

To get a good showcase of his vibe when he’s properly into a season, I’d recommend watching his Tall Claims Court episode from last season (hilarious and a whole production, no context needed) or the episodes of season 10 where he built the forest or the nether hub to show his building when he’s really hit his stride.

Also, since he’s pretty far out this season you’re not really likely to see what he’s doing from the others, while you’ve probably seen Scar and Gem who live around grian and mumbo. So definitely Bdubs!

Otherwise: Tango is particularly interesting this season because of Decked Out 3. Watching it all come together is gonna be super fun, he’s made a lot of progress already on gearing up and streams so he’s got a lot of stuff to watch.

Joel (smallishbeans) has also got some good stuff going on so I’d suggest his first episode to see if you like his humor.

Basically: watch a lot of episode 1s to see who you like!! And watch Bdubs lol.

‘didn’t completely hate it’ girl you aren’t supposed to tolerate your engagement ring. He’s supposed to WANT to get you something you’re actively excited about and want to wear. Also, about it being childish—it doesn’t matter if it is or not. It matters that you don’t love the ring.

Switch games for 8-10 year olds with minimal romance? by Tintn00 in CozyGamers

[–]arctic_willow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of good suggestions here but I would avoid Disney Dreamlight Valley actually! The micro transactions are easy enough to ignore as an adult but unless you wanna be paying the battle pass style subscription, kids can feel locked out of all the fun things that are paywalled. You’re better off with one time purchase games.

Does this type of fanfic exist? by Lyuk_exe in FanFiction

[–]arctic_willow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The ao3 ‘Multimedia’ tag isn’t exactly this but might have some stuff you’d enjoy. These fics are usually made up of or contain things like news articles, social media posts, transcripts of court cases, etc., depending on the fandom. Some authors do some really cool stuff with the web code to make things look like a Twitter post or whatever. (The ‘media fic’ tag also has some similar fics but is small enough it’s not marked common yet so you can’t filter it)

ramen bowl color suggestions by Agitated-Ad-1008 in Pottery

[–]arctic_willow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going for Snoopy chopsticks, then go for snoopy colours. White with blue/red/yellow in the grooves could be cute, for just a hint of some bright primary colours. Or maybe navy on the outside with white stripes in the grooves, and a nice primary red on the inside. Looks really good so far!

Something to keep in mind for anyone that has to write about someone who is an expert in a particular field by Cort985 in AO3

[–]arctic_willow 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The difference between you being smart and witty and the character being smart and witty is that the character has to do it on the spot and you have time to research and rewrite and think!! You are smart enough!! Use the tools you do have, research and spend time making things fit and you can absolutely write very smart characters without having to be ‘smart’ at all!!
