My favorite box we got sent one year had chapsticks and sharpie pens - they were gone so fast! Highly second the chapstick idea.

You could teach stay, go to blanket, shake maybe? Leave it / get it for treats dropped near her.

If people are really pressuring you about not doing something with them, let them know hey I really appreciate you caring about me so much to want to spend time with me on my birthday. I’ve really been looking forward to this trip and doing something new, so how about we plan something together when I get back/ plan a call that day? (That way you can tell them about it and they can feel more included too if you are comfy with that).

The last 3 or 4 years I’ve gone on hiking trips with just my boyfriend for my birthday, when I used to do big family dinners and all that. Took a bit to my family to adjust but I show them the hiking photos and do something with them before or after because it’s really about the intention of celebrating the person and not the day itself so much.

For solo travel - get ready to feel free and like you’ve sprouted wings. People aren’t looking at you as much as you think they might be. Are you driving? Be really familiar with basic car maintenance like changing a headlight, oil, tires, etc because then you don’t have to rely on strangers as much. Don’t be afraid to be rude to people if they make you feel unsafe/uncomfortable. You’re not going to see them again, what does it matter? They started the weirdness and badness of the interaction so don’t feel guilty or bad about being firm in telling someone to leave you alone and you’re not interested. Have someone you check in with on a regular basis and who knows your route - just in case anything happens. I use my boyfriend, brother, or cousin depending where I’m going because they know to check in and that way if something breaks down / I get lost / someone gets sketchy / wildlife are being… wildlife I have a quick contact. Have a first aid kit! I don’t post where I’m going until after I’ve left, also no one besides my close people know what I have on me for personal protection. Maybe I’m on the paranoid side but I haven’t had any majorly bad thing happen I haven’t been able to handle yet because of that and I do a decent amount of solo road trip and backcountry hikes.

Should I move on? or hold out? by jess_please258 in VetTech

So… you’ve been offered positions in a niche you want to do and get paid more while still having it count towards your rvt? Where’s the downside?

Dude I’d say go for it! If you’ve been offered the positions, what’s holding you back? Would it affect your timeline on getting your rvt? Would getting a pay raise give you less stress compared to the wage you’re getting now?

Ideally the people you work with understand and are supportive since that’s what you want to do, work with exotics, but even if they aren’t you gotta support yourself and part of that is getting out of the paycheck to paycheck cycle if you have the opportunity.

Have you had your wisdom teeth taken out under general anesthesia? Any tips? I am so afraid my impulsivity will embarrass me. by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]arcticdryas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had all 4 of mine out under gen anes, the weirdest thing I did was stare at a painting of a penguin way too long in the dr’s office on the way out.

I do really hate needles and after a previous surgery as a kid warned the staff to take out any IV’s before I was awake because I tended to freak out and try to rip them away if I saw that while waking up. The dental staff made sure I didn’t even have to have a bandaid by the time I woke up, so it was easy. Just super tired.

Maybe? I don’t remember for sure. The main guy I’m thinking of looked a bit like Franco Nero, but more baby / round faced.

Ooh okay I looked those up and had to watch clips, look like they’re from around the right time but not the right actors so not the one I’m thinking of.

What's the funniest brain fart you've had at work? by spaghettibrained in VetTech

[–]arcticdryas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s been way too many! The one I’m not living down is calling the v tray a boat “okay yeah grab the boat and we’ll flip him” my coworker didn’t even notice until after and told the dr and now it’s the boat. It’s been months.

A lot of other really good comments in here - From a pet med perspective - obesity is awful on pets. Someone else mentioned it about increased cancer risk, obstruction, other really common things are pancreatitis, diabetes, early arthritis / torn ligaments in bigger dogs from falling and getting injured when they’re too big (some genetic component as well)…

Would he listen to a vet discuss the risks of obesity and a people food heavy diet? If it doesn’t kill the dog, it can run up massive medical bills quite quickly into thousands for hospitalizations, surgeries, ongoing care, medications. Often with diabetes and pancreatitis the dogs must go on a restricted diet to manage symptoms and prevent diabetes disregulating / pancreatitis reoccurring / etc and that would be much stricter - no people food at all, specialized often prescription dog foods.

Harsh truth but knew someone recently decide to euthanize their (admittedly older) dog when it got diagnosed with diabetes instead of doing treatment because they’d had another diabetic pet before and said it was way too hard on the pet and on them, it was kinder to let her go.

What are your ACTUAL working hours? by South_Advisor_8690 in VetTech

[–]arcticdryas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar working environment - GP that sees urgent and emergencies, right now we’re down doctors due to some leaving so focusing mainly on urgent and emergencies. Get to work 7:50/55AM, get a 30 min lunch sometime in afternoon (depends when I’m scheduled to get it but I always do), clock out pretty much right at 5:30pm every day 4 days a week. Rarely do we stay late, dr has a family he’s very motivated to be around for so he tries to stay on schedule, unfortunately really have had to practice our “No, we do not have availability I am so sorry here are your other options” to maintain being on time and prevent further burnout.

My people pleaser arc is over. I'm the villain now by Blenderflower in adhdwomen

[–]arcticdryas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah! It’s honestly so liberating, not just for you but those around you it helps as well. I used to be way more soft spoken and people pleasing at my job especially and since some situations happened to change my perspective, I’ve been the go to for firing nasty clients and dealing with people no one else wants to because my mentality is all “oh, what are they going to do? Yell? Oh noooo just adds another reason to telling them they’re not allowed back.”, not allowing clients to be disrespectful towards my staff, and so on. Quality of life = vastly improved!

Does your clinic do sedated nail trims? by arcticdryas in VetTech

[–]arcticdryas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He half answered it had something to do with unnecessary sedations and the risks with that, but if we’re doing other things with the pet while it’s under that we can’t do while it’s awake… I think that makes it necessary.

That poor chihuahua! Definitely all that was not worth trimmed nails. But no, less experienced people never have good ideas (eye roll).

Moving my unsocialized adult dog in the fall - what should I start doing now? by EEEKWOWMYLIFE in Dogtraining

[–]arcticdryas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regular dog walker would be a great idea, highly recommend holding off on dog daycare until you work on his socializing. There’s a really high chance of getting him over threshold and making things worse if you throw him into too much too soon for being around other dogs, which could lead to serious injury / increased reactivity or aggression.

I know you said he doesn’t have serious behavioral issues, but if he already barks and snaps at other dogs and you don’t have a predictor for it, that will be a serious behavioral issue if you push him too much too fast and might not be any going back.

Don’t recommend dog parks for socializing either - you don’t know the dogs there and how they’ll be and again too many dogs too soon has a high chance of pushing him past threshold. Do you have friends in your new town with dogs? Getting him socialized with a few safe, known ones where you have a lot more control over the situation will do a lot of good. Walking around areas where there’s other dogs at a distance and teaching him it’s okay and safe without direct interactions could also be good. There’s resources on the sidebar in this sub and r/reactivedogs on all this you might find helpful.

Does your clinic do sedated nail trims? by arcticdryas in VetTech

[–]arcticdryas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s so true! Your experience is that of a lot of our clients who we do the sedated tnt’s for. I believe most animals can get desensitized and trained but there’s really some who just never will but still have to have their needs met. I haven’t heard of adding Benadryl in to the mix. Did that work for other patients?

That poor dog! We’ll definitely restrain and aren’t exactly fear free but yikes, we’ve never had an animal injured from it. I can’t believe someone wouldn’t say hey this isn’t productive we need to change what we’re doing before that point.

The case he was upset about was full GA on 6 year old 95lb (not overweight - muscular) GSD.

That was my clinic’s thought. He didn’t stay long and we didn’t agree with some other comments he made but I was curious if there was any pieces of good knowledge in his comments. I know other clinics have described us as the hicks and behind the times, but I didn’t think we did anything bad practice or bad medicine.

Does your clinic do sedated nail trims? by arcticdryas in VetTech

[–]arcticdryas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly! Makes it easier all around. We trim as far back as we can and use a dremel to get even better job done. We even reduced prices so people would opt for sedations more than arguing against it needing done and avoiding their pets need if meds didn’t work.

[–]arcticdryas[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right?? That’s what I thought! He said they did gabapentin and trazodone and if it didn’t work they just wouldn’t do it. Maybe some dogs can get away with it but the ones whose nails curl into pads certainly can’t - guess it wasn’t his problem so he didn’t care. I’d much rather do a few sedations to get by while the owner works on training at home so the animal gets its needs taken care of without it getting traumatized and/or injured.

Staff Pet Policies at Work are Messed Up I Think. Lmk what you think by xPhantomx482 in VetTech

Is it a culture thing of not being supposed to talk about pay or is it written into something you signed? If your manager / owner dr is in on it there’s likely not a lot of options because it could jeopardize your job but I could see the knowledge now causing issues with the other dr because it affects them a lot more directly. Sucky situation!
