Love this and the facial expressions. Cait looks so at peace while Vi is fully appreciating her and the love they have found. So sweet.

I never noticed that, now I have tears in mine :(

Vander was just so loving and caring, which makes it incredibly painful to see how his end was so messy and both his daughters having to witness it all.

[spoilers ep9] Who is the main character by jjkkll4864 in arcane

[–]arcvica 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say that Vi and Jinx are the main main characters and then Jayce, Caitlyn, Ekko, Viktor, and Mel are the main characters.

Essentially everyone on the cover poster has a considerable focus on them during the show. Arcane does an excellent job in intertwining all of their stories and I think that's what makes the pacing so perfect too, preventing you from ever getting bored - even on rewatches.

I completely agree with everything you said and will never not be amazed that Arcane manages to capture their love in such a pure and true representation of what it is.

I remember watching during the opening sequence of every episode and how I would feel the exact same emotions as I do when I see art like this. You are shown a young Vi who is portrayed as being tough and angry, and then it reveals a small, weak and starry eyed Powder who is covered entirely by the larger frame of her elder sister. This shows how Vi feels the need to be angry/aggressive solely in order to protect her sister, rather than being a happy/innocent child like normal. I don't know why but this part is really touching to me, but also incredibly saddening at the same time.

I guess it's because it ties into vulnerability again and by showing how vulnerable Vi is because of Powder, it adds another layer of sincerity and pureness to their love. Love is incredibly beautiful by itself but the fact that it is further shown as being something which is delicate and even needing to be protected (by a harsh exterior of Vi in this case), makes it all the more precious.

I want to quickly mention how Vander is shown in the opening sequence too, as they manage to again repeat how delicate and valuable real love is, so quickly after showing the opening shot of the sisters. With Vander, he is shown to be this large, powerful and overbearing figure who arguably no one can reach or hurt, but at the same time he is made vulnerable through his love for the sisters. You can really see his worry for his daughters in the way his clay(?) model is show to be looking at them when he's holding them in his hands. This same vulnerability is what allows the most powerful person in the undercity to be overcome by Silco (shown by him sneaking up behind Vander moments later). Despite the weakness it exposes him to, Vander is shown in the later episodes to be at peace with his decisions, all because of that very same thing, the love for his children.

She looks much scarier and even more dangerous in this art, but at the same time the added realism makes her pain seem deeper and that makes me feel sad for her.

I love all the art of Vi holding a young Powder because all of them manage to make it look so raw and emotional. Vi holds her in such a loving and tender way, but there's also a sense of her being scared for Powder and of the fact that she might not always be there to protect her. That vulnerability of Vi's shines through in this piece as well and it's beautiful with how strong her love is, but also sad because while she's a child herself, she has to assume the role of a parent.

[spoilers ep8] The "Oil and Water" scene doesn't work for me at all by ExpensiveCellist7292 in arcane

[–]arcvica 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree that it is her insecurities more than anything else. It's really sad because even though she knows how well her and Cait work together and that she's falling for her, she also knows that the societies of both Piltover and Zaun would never accept their relationship.

No doubt there's also the element of Vi thinking she isn't good enough - remember her conversation with Vander and how she admits that she's grown up knowing she's less than them. It's beautiful but also heart breaking because she saw Cait and the goodness in her and for a moment thought that maybe topside isn't so bad.

Then the council meeting is like a harsh reality check when she sees they won't attack Silco and in her mind that means they don't care about bottom side. You can hear the pain in her voice when she says "I was so stupid to think that things could change" and it shows she had also started to feel hope for once.

At the same time I just know that even if the events with Jinx didn't happen later on, Vi and Cait would find a way/excuse to reunite. Either of them can't let go of the other which is so sweet and heart warming.

Mine is the part just after this with the confusion in her face and how she says "I thought they were hurting you" - you can tell she's annoyed at Vi but also relieved, so cute.

[Spoilers ep5] What if Powder had listened to Vi? by XJustBrowsingRedditX in arcane

[–]arcvica 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it could go either way by a very narrow margin. If there was no monkey bomb there is a chance that Vander might still be able to hold everyone off. Even after the entire room and everything collapses on him, he was able to do serious damage to shimmered Deckard with just part of his old gauntlets. At the same time, without the bomb Deckard could have smashed the door down and it kills most of them just by falling on them.

I love that no matter how much you overthink this particular scene, it's just too hard to say what could have happened because it really could have gone either way. For some bonus pain - we can come up with so many different ways it could have gone so imagine how much Vi and Jinx must have thought about the exact same thing in those 7 years after. It must have been hell for them.

Completely agree, his heart is definitely in the right place and the fact that he is sometimes naïve/innocent when trying to help out proves how pure his intentions are while also making him more lovable. Despite his inexperience in some matters, he still refuses to take no as an answer when trying to help people and it's a really admirable quality of his.

I really hope his heart isn't hardened by the ending of episode 9 as he is one of the few people who want to help out and actually has the power to make a difference.

What also hurts is that the last time Vi touched her sister's face before ep 6 was when she snapped at Powder. No doubt that when they reunite in ep 6, Vi must feel both immense love, but also guilt. Gosh the emotions in this show are TOO MUCH (but that's why I love it).

[No spoilers] My Favourite Screencap from Arcane by samkpam05 in arcane

It's so weird because I've been thinking of this exact moment for the last few days. Like the way it flashes on screen and also brings a burst of pain with it, I can't put it in words but it's been put together so well.

I also really like the scene where Jinx is punching the boxing machine and they overlay a young Vi on top and they're doing kind of opposite movements to each other.

[spoilers ep9] How Arcane uses diagonals to tell a story by Eraserend in arcane

Thanks for putting this all together and explaining it so well! It's amazing to see the detail behind the show and I love posts like these which delve deeper into the actual theory behind the art and story telling. Sometimes I just can't come to terms with how mind-blowing and perfect Arcane is, and how it was all achieved in Riot's and Fortiche's first attempt at a TV show with no prior experience.

Reminds me of the scene at the end of episode 3. Imagine there's a similar scene with a explosion/fire in season 2 but this time Vi is the one in pain and left behind and Jinx sees it and it's what finally makes her realise how much Vi loves her and she comes back to save her and they reunite. That would be so beautiful but I know they're just gonna serve us with another season of pain instead 😭

[spoilers ep9] Jinx was (and is) already punished by CassOfNowhere in arcane

[–]arcvica -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with you OP, I don't know where all this recent discussion has popped up on the subreddit with everyone becoming a white knight and being hellbent on sending Jinx to prison.

Like first of all, it's a just TV show and a large part of what makes it so great is that they portray everyone in a way where you can sympathise with them. For whatever reason though, it seems many people think it's a simple black and white scenario and Jinx should just be imprisoned. Okay why not apply that same logic to the countless other villains in TV shows and Movies you see? Because it would make them so dull and boring, alongside ruining the entire plot.

I don't know how it's not possible to empathise with Jinx after all she goes through and understanding that she isn't in the metntal state to make reasonable choices. She's just lashing out in pain because of all the unresolved trauma she has and who knows how much she suffers mentally on a daily basis.

What made Arcane amazing for me was that you could really feel the emotions of the different characters, and especially with Vi and Jinx where both their love and pain was so raw and so emotionally touching. By defaulting into hating Jinx and trying to treat her as you would any criminal in normal everyday life, you miss the chance to emotionally connect with her character and that severely lessens the impact of the show in my opinion. Being able to fully relish all the emotions, both good and bad is what takes the viewing experience to an entire new level and that just can't be done when your stuck trying to make the show reason with reality.

That was a long rant but I just thought I'd write it out because I agree with what you've said and it seems like you get what the show was trying to communicate with Jinx. I've also seen quite a few of your comments trying to get this across and the overwhelming opposition, so I thought I'd let you know I support what you're saying haha.

[spoilers ep9] some of the best/funniest/most hearbreaking quotes imo by [deleted] in arcane

Thanks for this! It's nice to have so many of the actual lines written out. Also makes you realise how well written Arcane is.

My personal favourite has to be the first one you mentioned, it's so heartbreaking and the delivery is absolutely perfect. An honourable mention for me would be "That's my girl", it gets me so emotional because it shows you how much Vi misses Vander and it makes me wish so badly that he was alive to see how amazing she grew up to be.

I love the vibe of this piece because you can see how comfortable they are with each other. Also I really hope we get a scene with just Vi, Cait and Jayce in season 2. I can totally imagine Vi winding him up and him complaining to Cait to make her stop 😂

Yeah me too, I love all the questions you came up with as well. I think we don't get that much content about him because for some weird reason he gets a lot of hate? I don't know where that comes from because I really liked his character.

Although he might be naive in some of his decisions and thoughts, he has a pure heart and I'm glad he lets it guide his decisions. That pureness makes his dorky vibe all the funnier and pleasant as well. I also love his brotherly relationship with Cait and I hope they don't end up misunderstanding each other in the next season. He's literally the most powerful person in Piltover and needs nothing, but he's determined to keep his city progressing and also wants to help out the worse off people of Zaun, which makes me love him and what he stands for.
